I cannot accept that somewhere, sometime in 2014...a group of filmmakers sat down and said...”how do we continue the story? Oh i know! Palpatines granddaughter is the hero. But shhh its a secret!”.

That's what I find so weird about it and unbelievable, if indeed she simply decides to assume the name and that's all there is to it. It is unimaginative and reactionary to the point of nihilism, like, nothing really matters in this story, it's all pointless fantasy that customers will always buy because there's no competition. They asked for her to be a Skywalker so that's what we'll give them, how it happens and what it looks like is irrelevant.

I still don't think the leaks are correct on this part, there must be some kind of twist to it.

Oh no, Palpatine returning and the protagonist being his granddaughter has always been part of the process. They had to keep it so secret though, so they didn’t build these revelations up nor ever hinted at them being a possibility. Trust me, Abrams knows what he’s doing. After all, he was able to keep Khan a secret! No one suspected that nor did Abrams ever lie about that revelation!

    They didn't.

Colin Trevorrow didn't have any knowledge of such a thing, and if anyone tries to argue that they kept it as a secret from the screenwriter of TROS until the last minute, then I only have one thing to say to them:

The decision to bring back Palpatine was made at some point in time which can be no earlier than the 15th of December two years ago.

Oh...i know full well they did not. They never even bothered with the answer. They just set up a very Skywalker-esque hero and that’s it.

It’s clear as day they did not plan past TFA and knew they wanted their actual hero redeemed.

I see what they’re doing with it, but I’m not feeling the Rey ‘Skywalker’ thing, to be honest.

Ironically, the bolded gives me very strong vibes from Lucas’ own film TXH-1138

I'm sooo tempted to put that on a t-shirt to wear to the movie, since I'm probably not going to the effort of dressing up this time. I'll wait until the premier and the full leak though.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if "Rey was the granddaughter of the big bad villain" was thought of in 2014, though "the big bad villain" would have been Snoke rather than Palpatine. That would be entirely in keeping with the kind of decision making that permeates this trilogy. The hero being related to the villain worked so well in 1980 so let's do it again, but of course, with no understanding of what made that twist work so well in the original.

The problem with that is: If the force has the ability to counteract the Sith in such an overt way, then how can the force go out of balance in the first place?

File under "Works in mysterious ****ing ways". [face_devil]

To be honest given the Force's track record in either continuity I'm kind of surprised there's never been a '**** da Force' attitude arise in the galaxy.

If Rey is going to be shown grappling with her own darkness, (we see it a lot apparently), the ending of TROS being hopeful in tone would still be largely hypothetical in nature. That’s just where we leave her, and the Jedi still have not been resurrected. It’s entirely possible Rey Palpatine gives in to her darkness at some point down the line. She’s young, and forever is a long time.

Which just still doesn't make sense, even working from the premise that she's a Palpatine. So what? Was Plapy a descendant of an evil force user? Are midichlorians aligned for either darkness or light instead of being neutral? Having "Palpatine blood" does not predispose Rey to the darkside any more than having any other kind of blood.

In my head canon, Luke thought Rey was killed during the Temple massacre and that, along with all his students getting killed due to something he caused, was a part of what made him depressed and go into seclusion.

It'll probably be 300 pages come January. Sanctuary thread was most popular on the boards by far before it was locked. The conversation flows amazingly well when you don't have people derailing things with Reylo stanning every 10 minutes.

Which could have been set up with one additional line of dialogue from Han in TFA, when he explains what happens to Luke.

Maybe in the final battle of ROS Palpy’s will declare that he is the force before doing his signature “roar n spin” maneuver. You know, bring everything full circle & all.
