The most obvious cut that should be restored is the Lando/Jannah reunion scene that is supposed to be in the novelization.

IMO, the most obvious cut should be any deleted footage with Carrie Fisher because I can't comprehend how JJ would allow any of her scenes to be cut. Whatever anyone feels about Rian Johnson here, he had the grace to make sure that everything Carrie filmed ended up in TLJ yet JJ has the gall to start snipping away at priceless footage.

How would they film that? CGI Leia?

I'm guessing so. TBH, despite what Abrams said in the run-up to release, I'm pretty sure Leia is mostly CGI throughout the film.

There is a huge difference between slightly tailoring existing footage and creating an entire CGI character from scratch

I can't say Disney would release such a thing, but it would make a lot of sense. One of the biggest criticisms of RoS amongst both critics and fans is how much they try to shove into the running time and how rapidly they jump between things; more scenes to fill out certain story threads would be appreciated by just about everyone. And from a business perspective it's a relatively easy way to boost the numbers of a film that's probably not going to do as well as hoped. Plus, Disney already did it with Avengers and its not like they brought in Iger to make SW less like the MCU model.

One thing I'll say is that it would definitely be an 'extended cut' as a opposed to a 'director's cut'. They're not going to radically change things. Whatever Abrams may have wanted to do different and actually got the chance to shoot will remain safely in the Disney vault for, well, hopefully not forever, but at least for the foreseeable future.

Eh, I don't know if a director's cut is going to improve the messiness of the first half, especially the obligatory ticking clock, two MacGuffins, and the unnecessary Chewie death fake out.

Yeah, I'm hopeful they do have (and will share) this footage on the Blu-ray but until there's firmer evidence I'm going to remain skeptical. Like you say, it's all speculation. Fingers crossed though, as I would love to see a Ben lives ending even if it is only in the deleted scenes.

Yeah, pretty much (I'm assuming Force Ghost Leia at the end is CG as well). So I would completely understand if it was planned or considered but then never filmed for that reason. But if they filmed it I would love to see it and think it does sound like a more fitting ending for the full saga.

How on Earth was the Chewie death fake out unnecessary? It’s essential to Rey’s story.

    What obligatory tickling clock?

Also, agree with the above - Chewie's fake death certainly wasn't unnecessary - it showed Rey using the Dark Side by accident and doubting herself - part of her journey throughout the film.

You should only include it if it benefits the film though.

unfortunately it will never happen, it never happened. Never as this time it would take a director's cut, the film is too convulsive and frenetic, an extended cut would gives it more space and breath

Is it possible to get a directors cut from a different director?

I want to see a director's cut of the whole sequel trilogy. Filmed by a different director...

The ticking clock of Palpatine's fleet being ready in 16 hours. I get why it's there, but it felt to me like it factored into how rushed the first half of the film felt.

And yes, I agree that Chewie's "death" has an emotionally traumatic impact for Rey that fits into her arc, but it would have been bolder to actually commit to it. As it stands, the fake out leads to an obligatory diversion of a rescue mission, which serves to put Rey on the Star Destroyer to speak with Kylo face to face. Again, I understand the reasoning for it, but it just adds to the overly frantic pace of the first half of the film.

This needs to happen. I know they don't normally do it, but this is the last film of the saga and there was clearly a lot of stuff that was cut, more than the previous two films. The opening sequence for example, it was good but it felt like a trailer in itself - too rushed and lacking in detail and the atmosphere you would get if more time had been devoted to it. It's clear that it has been cut down because the opening track on the soundtrack does not appear (at least, not in full) in the film itself. I also have a hard time believing there wasn't more Knights of Ren stuff in there originally.

The director work was not the problem in the ST. They needed better (and more thought out) writing. The actual direction was fine (the ST arguably has the best direction of the 3 trilogies... it's certain miles better than the PT in that department)

They really did and the film editor hasn't even tried to hide it in a recent podcast where she flat out says that the film was being worked on until the end of November and if they had more time, they still would have been making changes. Basically the film was unfinished till the end and her advice was to shut your brains off so you can enjoy the film. Thank goodness a Rian Johnson film has never told audiences they need to play dumb to grasp his films.

Just watched ESB, and Obi Wan tells Luke that "you'll face [Vader] alone, I cannot intervene"

So the voices Rey hears may be all that the past Jedi can actually do, and cannot actually manifest to help

This must surely increase the chances of an extended cut. I’d love to see a 3-hour version of this movie, and I’m sure there is enough footage to do that.

Feels like a movie that needs a longer runtime, particularly in the opening.

Though some of the stuff like Chewie death fake out I could do without.

I really don’t understand the dislike of the Chewie death scene. It is an absolutely essential part of Rey’s story.

Hux and Pryde were supposed to be in the Mustafar forest scene alongside Kylo but the actors confirmed their parts were cut. Said look for this scene in the deleted scenes.
