Sorry for the derailing of the discussion, but

I just noticed that the TIEs have glass(?) between the "ribs" of the top hatch, I remember that in the old canon that the cockpit was basically "open" to the vacuum, that was why the pilots needed breathing aparatus.

My thought on the Xyston-class was also that given how they were buried at the start of the film and most of them spent the whole movie sitting in formation requiring the nav signal to leave the Exegol, I wonder what their manning levels were. We see a bridge crew on the ship that destroys Kijimi, but it's entirely possible the rest had skeleton crews or were even running on automated systems. That might fit with the high command meeting where they discuss the need to increase forced conscription from occupied worlds; unless Palpatine already had them all hanging around Exegol or was running a full clone production facility a hundred new Star Destroyers would require about 3 million new crew. If the stats on Wookieepedia posted for the Xyston are correct, it also looks like it's undermanned and underarmed (aside from the axial superlaser) for something that's supposed to be a 200%-scale ISD.

Speaking of which, the ID4-esque ending sequence showing lone Star Destroyers being taken out over Bespin, Jakku, and Endor did give the impression that overall the First Order was spread thin across the galaxy and relying on intimidation; once a galaxywide uprising started they got torn to pieces.

    In Rebels

several of the Spectres are in the ship without helmets. Presumably it's airtight - it just doesn't have proper life support, so they can only pull this trick for short hops.

I'm pretty sure the Rogue One Visual Guide explains it by saying that the TIE/ln is equipped with minimal life support, which as you said does not allow breathing for long periods of time. The TIE Bomber is supposedly equipped with complete life support, but as far as I remember pilots are still equipped with closed flight suits (in case of ejection I guess).

Another thing, because TIEs are unshielded, they're prone to being damaged by the tiniest of space debris. Think about it, they're going inconceivably fast and a tiny pebble could smash through the window and release all the air out into space.

I don't believe so, but I'd imagine they would have to be very roomy...

Maybe their ships look like the whale probe from Star Trek IV.

I have to wonder if they have unique warships - there's the intriguing "Herglic Crush" in the EU, set c15000 BY, that we know virtually nothing about...

TIE armor seems a lot more robust than the EU makes out. TIEs are often flying through atmosphere and debris with no issues. And, on screen and in gameplay, it takes multiple glancing hits or a significantly powerful single hit to take a TIE down completely. TIEs seem a lot more robust than the Eta-2s in ROTS.

If we use "gameplay" as evidence of how tough or flimsy a vehicle is, that will lead us down a rabbit hole where lightsabers need multiple hits to kill a stormtrooper and bacta packs are only effective if you step on them.

Have you not seen THE MANDALORIAN?.....

I'm more leaning toward movie & TV content as proof, but X-WING ALLIANCE also matches up well to on-screen canon.....

.....except for the Death Star taking a month to make a right turn...

.. .(yes, I hacked it to make it playable. Who wouldn't?)

Well the movies show that the Y-wings and X-wings can be destroyed by several shots and those shields do nothing...

True. I had a hard time wrapping my head around that, especially seeing Vader's TIE take down a Pelta frigate with just his cannons. But then I thought about the 30mm gun on an A-10 Thunderbolt II....basically a cannon with an airplane built around it. TIEs are mainly powerful guns strapped on two ion engines with a pilot added as an afterthought. Droid TIEs make more sense, IMHO....

Also, Obi-Wan's fighter survived all those hits from Anakin, so on-screen it actually looks like a pretty tough cookie despite it being an unshielded lightweight fighter.

Ships are only as weak or as powerful as the plot requires.

I can believe it's a possibility that if both were on Myrkr, the Emperor would lose in hand-to-hand, and that all his speed comes from the Force.

Kind of nuts that that line still works years later.
