On a second viewing, I noticed where the medal comes from. When Leia commits to reaching out to Kylo, she lays down and in her hands, you can see she is holding this medal. It's Han's, and is meant to show that she doesn't intend to come back from this. She's taking Han with her as she leaves this existence to save her son.

Maz takes that medal and gives it to Chewie. It should be a heartfelt moment because it's a memento of Han and Leia, but because it isn't made clear that that's what's happening, it's easily seen as "Chewie finally gets his medal". Of course he does, but as a double entendre.

At least that's how it reads to me. Given recent interviews, if you ask JJ, he's likely to say that medal is whatever you think it is...mystery box...

The next time JJ pitches a mystery box, he should be laughed out of the conference room. The concept has done enough damage at this point.
