So, things learnt from this thread's response to Picard ep 4: Klingons don't have a monopoly on the term Bird-of-Prey.

Agreed but IMO there would be be limits to that. That scene was Picard saying that he should’ve spent more quality bonding time with that inner circle of his crew. Just as he would already often do with Beverley. One of the main reasons he, or any other commander of a crew keeps some distance from his subordinates is bcs he will at times have to send them into danger, & possibly into life threatening situations. Or he may have to discipline or demote them. I take that final scene as a softening of his stance - with that particular select group of people, but not to the point where he’s “one of the gang” socially with his crew. I don’t buy for instance that a few years later, & 14-20 yrs before “Picard” he would’ve allowed one of his Lt Commanders to refer to him as JL. I’m just grateful the writers resisted the temptation of her calling him Jo-Lu.

They need to swing by Earth and pick up Janeway first.

If the show is going to hopefully morph into TNG-era all Stars, pick up Worf, have The Sisko suddenly materialize and start hollering at everyone in sight, Riker start hitting on Agnes, and Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram overwrite the other holograms except for the hospitality Hologram.

Quark is on Freecloud, obviously. Leave Raffi there.

anyway Chabon did Q&As! About sunglasses and swearing!

yah Garak too, obviously. I wouldn't think the Cardassians would be much of a threat, I think they basically got flattened in the Dominion War. But Garak is probably scheming.

I like Agnes, its nice to have someone who isn't brooding on the ship, between the official captain/pilot (and his many, many holograms) and Picard and Raffi's baggage. And now we've got Elnor too. My favorite moment was probably when she heard what the requirement for worthiness- guess she hadn't realized she had signed up for a suicide mission. Not that I quite trust her but still.

I took the aging line to mean that Picard just felt older. Back then, he was energetic, optimistic, now, Picard's pulled himself out of his self-pity but he still feels a lot of guilt over his failures and he wouldn't be surprised if this last mission kills him (either that or the irumodic syndrome will).

It was strange seeing something from Balance of Terror in CG (beyond what they did with the TOS episodes years back) but I didn't mind. I hope next week we finally get some clues on the big mystery Picard's looking into. The Borg cub storylines are still moving slowly, dancing around the big question of just why Maddox (or whoever) would send a sleeper agent android to a Borg cube.

I miss Laris and Zhaban more than the chateau but its probably cheaper to reuse sets than add more ship backgrounds. And of course the big shocker at the end (well, if you haven't seen any trailers for this series yet). I'm still liking the series a lot, just hope by the pacing picks up by now.

They never did, the first time were hear the term used is in Balance of Terror to refere to a Romulan ship - Klingons only ended up with birds-of-preys becuse the Bounty was originally written as being a stolen Romulan ship, and when SOS's script was altered to make it Klingon-built ship nobody bothered to change the designation, which then propogated across the franchise due to the constant re-use of said ship class.

Beverly called him Jean-Luc all the time, even in front of other officers (she's a commander, not an lt commander but given Raffi's posistion of authority relative to Picard;s that difference does'nt really matter that much - the other's being so formal had to do with respect, not Picard himself having an issue with it - I have a hard time think Picard, a few years into TNG, would really offered that much resistence if Riker wanted to start calling him JL, so long as the latter did'nt abuse it.

Not necessarily - look at Germany in 1969 relative to 1945, powers can rebuilt quite quickly from ruin, especially with outside help and echonmic aid.

Some key differences: Beverly is a very old friend. Was Raffi all the way back in those earlier scenes showing the two of them? Beverley also wasn't a bridge officer. She was a doctor, & as we've seen the doctor/captain relationship on a starship (or any ship) is often a special one, where a certain informality is accepted. A Chief Medical Officer can after all overrule the captain in some instances & even relieve them of command. Like I said, it's a unique dynamic on a ship. A bridge officer, his First Officer no less calling him JL - I don't like it but that's just me.

The DS9 relaunch series did something rather interesting with Cardassia and Garak particularly. The final word on that story, which covered many books over many years, is Enigma Tales by McCormack.

Maybe? Who knows. We don't know how long they'd known each other by that point - hell, from what little we know at this point Raffi could have been a junior officer on the D during TNG, or a senior officer on the E (maybe she replaced Lieutenant Daniels as tac officer, since he dispears after Insurrection).

Technically Crusher is a bridge officer - she took the test and met the qualifications:p. But I know what you mean.

Man, then you must have hated it when Spock called Kirk Jim, Kira called Sisko Ben and Chakotay called Janeway Kathryn[face_laugh].

We see in the deleted scenes for Nemesis that Riker tricks Commander Madden into calling Picard Jean-Luc, and while Picard was visably annoyed by that maybe it ended up sticking, and this is a holdover from that? (I know deleted scenes are'nt canon, but that does'nt mean they might not decide to reference those events and make them part of the lore)

    Yeah well, he's not alone[face_blush].

No, & I wouldn’t mind Raffi calling him Jean-Luc. It’s the schoolyard style nickname that grates with some of us, & seems like the last thing Picard would answer to from one of his officers. You’ll notice that no one in his crew called Kirk “Jimmy Boy”. Also no “KayJay” on Voyager or “Disco Sisko” on DS9.

Only Dax. Of course if he had the Picard style nickname it would be the most unfortunate one: BS

Given Raffi’s personality to this point, I buy it as Picard picking his battles with her. She’s strange.

we're going to officially have Guinan in S2 at least (Sir Patrick Stewart invited her on the talk show and I'm totally okay with that cuz generally Guinan-involved episodes are good to great). Although I can understand how they want to tiptoe around with Legacy characters and keep it pertinent to the story. Like Hugh and Seven in a Borg / synthetic story are nigh mandatory. Although you'd figure Voyager's Doctor would be a good pull too (although the show has gotten rather Emergency hologram centric lately, maybe he'll be buried underneath the programming). They managed to somewhat logically address the missing rest of the TNG cast with Jean-Luc saying he didn't want to put them in danger. Although not a single mention of Beverly Crusher so far in 4 somewhat leisurely paced episodes makes me think she's a given to reappear soon.

Well, we know we’re getting Troi and Riker at some point in this season, and Guinan is confirmed for next, but yeah, I can’t imagine that they haven’t at least talked about Geordie, Worf and Dr. Crusher.
