Yeah, if they wanted Maul to come back post Rebels, Obi-Wan would have thrown him down a reactor shaft, then blown up the planet it was on.

This episode was awesome! I got Star Wars Resistance flashbacks when Ahsoka asked Anikan and Obi-Wan for help to liberate Mandalore, but they were spread thin. Kaz sent a message to the Resistance for help to liberate the Colossus of the First Order, but they were spread pretty thin.

Well he already survived falling down what was basically a nuclear reactor shaft on Naboo plus being bisected. I think people forget Maul's knowledge of the Sith teachings, the Nightsister teachings he studied - he did after all commune and bring back spirits of the dead Nightsisters. On top of that he had the Holocron from Malachor which contained all their secrets and merged the Jedi and Sith holocrons with Ezra. Of course you can always throw in a descendant or clone from the Sith Eternal - or likely Maul had his own cult pooled from the Mauldalorians. Plus we know there is some living Nightsisters around and he his base of operations was actually on Dathomir not Mandalore.

It's frustrating that everyone here is talking about how amazing the animation was when it something that the last few seasons of TCW did just as well, if not better. This isn't some major jump in quality in comparison to The Clone Wars, if anything it's actually slightly worse.

Well really you would expect the show to look better 6 years after season 6 ended. CGI in general has improved and Disney have probably put in a generous amount of money into it.

But at the same time its worth remembering after season 6 the production crew despatched to other projects so these episodes are about trying to recapture the old look with as much of the old crew and technology as they could get after 6 years.

We've been following these Mandos for the whole series. They're terrorists and murderers, unless you think all the bad Mandos decided to stick with Maul, and the good Mandos broke away. They also despise the Jedi, their ancient(and current) arch enemy.

He went alone to rescue Satine, not knowing that Maul was there. Once he finds out what has happened, he lives to escape and tell about it, and we never hear the result, but the Jedi would have gone after Maul at that point. Perhaps he was gone from Mandalore when they did?

At that moment, they have Dooku with thousands of ships invading Coruscant. They have a real crisis on their hands, and have been recalled to help. We've seen the battle of Coruscant in the movie and the old CW. Compare that to the ex Sith Lord turned Crime Lord who is apparently in hiding in the same city/planet Obi Wan last saw him to be at. There is no comparison. Billions of lives are at stake on Coruscant. Ashoka is out of line with how flippant she is towards them.
Well, the first 8 episodes might have been a slight downgrade from previous seasons, but they clearly put more time and money into this episode. It looks good.

There is always that one person lmao

The animation in this episode was leaps and bounds better then anything we've gotten, that includes the stuff we got in the first 8 episodes, so it is alright for people to be excited and surprised, the opening battle was brilliant and the initial Siege was something we've never seen before in this show.

This is as Star Wars as it gets, sit back and enjoy it.

Green and gold Mando armour Almec is the icon I didn't know I needed in my life [face_love] As soon as next week's episode airs I'm sticking that baby on ;)

And seeing Gar Saxon and Rook Kast fully animated after 6 years of only being still comic panels is utterly amazing :p As for trying to wrangle out the chronology... Sith Shrine wasn't completely erased from existence, so that's fun for me :) It can still just about happen between the completed episodes.

So we now know Son of Dathomir never reached the modeling phase. Also, Gar Saxon is literally the Rebels model. And why does Rook Kast have purple hair?

I understand why they didn't animated Son of Dathomir and Dark Disciple. The comic and the book would lose importance and there would be almost no reason for buying them. But I found interesting that they explain why the Jedi Council isn't that interested in capturing Maul. In Son of Dathomir the Jedi think Dooku is the Sith Master and Maul is the Sith Apprentice, but in Dark Disciple, Quinlan finds out about Darth Sidious and probably ends up telling the Jedi about him. So the Jedi are now more interested in finding Sidious than taking care of Maul.

And I understand why Ahsoka thought Mandalore was more important than Coruscant. The sisters told her that their parents died because of a Jedi action on Coruscant trying to catch Ziro and probably thought this was just another mission where the target (now the Chancellor) was more important than protecting the lives of the people of the planet and there would be more unnecessary deaths because the Jedi would only care about protecting the Chancellor.

    @Jesta'

The punk hair color was too Sabine Wren-ish and the face looked almost like the model used for Arihnda Pryce. Seems they tried giving Kast a similar accent that the Armorer uses on The Mandalorian.

Presumably these next 3 episodes are like cat and mouse for Mandalore and who captures who.

Actually, SoD did enter modelling phase (the last arc to do so), since we have model sheets as well location assets reused in Rebels (Stygeon prison and Asteroid base). Animatics weren't produced, but a multitude of assets were completed all the way up to March 2013 when production finally ceased on TCW.

And that's not Saxon's Rebels character model at all:

Awesome opening episode. The classic LFL logo! [face_love]

The opening montage and battle had my eye looking in the background to see if I am blessed with a last minute appearance/introduction of an UT-AT, but, alas...

Also, there's an obvious time jump here between the Ahsoka "Season 6 arc" and this "Season 8" finale- a minimum of a few months (the duration of the Outer Rim Sieges and Padme's pregnancy). Ahsoka's investigation tracking down Maul's transmissions obviously took some time until they could pinpoint where on Mandalore he was, and her Sith Temple trip back to Coruscant (and SOD) must have happened in between before she arrives in this episode.

So far, this episode is probably as far as Anakin and Obi-Wan's hijinks aboard the Invisible Hand. (Obi says they'd be at Coruscant in a hour, so add time through the battle and through the ship and that probably aligns with the opening Siege (especially since we're not seeing Anakin and Obi's entire journey through the battle/ship in the film).

She was apparently the character design inspiration for Sabine.

    Hello, old friend.

That's an interesting take that I didn't immediately think of. Ashley herself had hinted that the underworld arc was more important to the story than meets the eye.

I stand corrected. He still doesn't mesh with The Clone Wars art style.
So this isn't true, new models were made for Rebels. Stygeon prison was modeled for Rebels, as new concept art was made for it, it wasn't a case of asset reuse and it makes sense to assume the asteroid base was the same. As it stands, I don't believe Son of Dathomir reached the modeling phase.

In regard to Kast, she had brown hair in the comic, I doubt that was an error. Also, her head doesn't mesh with The Clone Wars art style implying it wasn't made for SOD

If you have this concept art it would be nice to see. But it still doesn't confirm or deny much, since even the new TCW uses identical concept art for the new arcs, with the barest of changes, just switching the production info. The fact that much of Season 1 of Rebels relied on re-used TCW assets (Sewer set, Endente's camp, Anaxes) lends credence to the Stygeon Prison being another of these. That's why the season is set so heavily on Lothal, there wasn't time or budget to create a vaster range of locations.

As for SoD models... we have some examples of model sheets featuring new 3D models:
