I personally don't like the idea since it doesn't add anything to the lore, and it makes the galaxy feel smaller.

I actually really like the subversion, that C-3PO the stuck-up aristocratic droid was built in a slave's bedroom, whilst grubby mechanic R2 comes from the height of royalty. It's a really fun contrast in their beginnings.

As for the unlikeliness of building a droid? Eh, seems fine to me, Anakin works in a shop that sells repair parts, fixing things as his job. Droids are everywhere, so it's not like Anakin's done something no-one else can do, clearly.

That's probably one of the things that liked Lucas about this as well.

On a more practical level, 3PO had to be somehow introduced in the movie, and this was just a good way to do it.
If you go from 1 to 6, I don't think t makes anything smaller. You are introduced to a number of characters in the first episodes, and you just follow their story.

Lucas always toyed with connections between the characters.

In the OT (TESB) he made Vader Luke's father and then in ROTJ Leia Luke's sister and Vader's daughter.

In TPM we god Anakin's mother and Anakin making 3PO, in AOTC we saw Cliegg Lars marrying Shmi thus making (in a way) Owen Luke's uncle, and on top of that, Boba Fett and his father.

It doesn't make the galaxy smaller, it's one of many fun revelations that made Lucas' SW so special.

Doesn't really bother me though it might have been more natural to have C-3PO be Padme's from the beginning as she is a queen who might really need a protocol droid fluent in over six million forms of communication and to have R2 be built by Anakin as R2 would probably be more useful to Anakin with his interest in podracing and parts that more frequently circulate through Watto's shop I imagine. I don't really think that it makes the galaxy feel too small, though. It's nice to have C-3PO and R2 as a sort of chorus for the PT and the OT and to see how they are entwined with the Skywalker family from the beginning of the saga. It just makes them feel like a very real part of the journey.

    Awful! (as 3PO might say)

It does explain why Vader stops Boba from shooting Chewie who has C-3PO on his back:

I think it’s stupid. Threepio and Artoo really didn’t need to be in the prequels, if you ask me.

Lucas had said since the 1980s that the whole saga would be largely told through the point of view of both droids. So, this being his creation, yes, he felt they needed to be in all the saga movies.

Threepio and R2 are the only characters in all nine films correct?

That is correct. They also get a cameo in Rogue One.

Threepio doesn’t do anything to justify his presence in the prequels.

Artoo’s presence just raises questions of why he never told Luke about Yoda, or his father.

I think R2D2 kept quiet because who would believe a droid knew Luke’s father, Obi-Wan, and was in the Clone Wars? Besides that R2 may have been prudent enough to not tell Luke leat he search for Vader before being trained by a Jedi Master.

Perhaps R2 felt if Luke faces Vader which he probably knew he would do, knowing Vader is his father beforehand could make Luke hesitate.

And if Luke manages to kill Vader and then being told "Oh, by the way, that was your father." That might mess him up good.
Or what did happen, Luke was told by Vader and it nearly broke him.

As for C3PO, in TPM he does not do anything and his presence feels forced.
It's sort of "Hey kids look, it's C3PO!!"

    Also the logic is shaky.
That Anakin could build a droid, nine years old but he is established as a tech wiz and he has stuff to nick from Watto. So ok.
But that is just the building, what about the programming?
C3PO has a vast knowledge of languages and also protocol. Something that Anakin would know little about.
Sure it is possible that all Anakin did was to put the pieces together and all programming was already done.
Sort of what Chewie did in ESB.

    Also why a Protocol Droid?
The stated goal is to help his mom. Aren't there Household droids in SW? Droids whose function is to clean and cook?
A Protocol droid is a bit different and more specific. And I doubt Shmi normally holds state dinners with foreign dignitaries that might need a protocol droid.
    Were there no better options?

    Bye for now.

Why would the droid who saw his friend and master fall down the dark side tell the son of this master about how the father became a murdering psychopath?

There is btw. a Legends EU Trilogy called "The Dark Nest Trilogy" where R2 shows Luke holograms of what happend during Episode III. Iam pretty sure something similar happend in the new Canon between Ep VI and VII, it is just not told yet.
