I feel like the Jedi should be, but I know they're not.

Do non-sentient speccies count? If so the shaaks from AOTC are described as herbivores by the Wook.

Even if they were eating the Star Wars equivalent of cultured meat, that would be cool.

As a vegan, I've gotten used to calling all animal species sentient, because everyone has senses and responds emotionally to their experiences, no matter what species they are. But I understand that by non-sentient, you mean animals whose intellect isn't advanced enough to understand things and make deliberate choices on the same level as us.

My answer would be no, they don't count, since they don't have a choice or the capacity to make one.

That said, it's not a given that every intelligent humanoid species in Star Wars would have a choice. Some of them are likely natural carnivores.

I would love to see veganism addressed in Star Wars in a positive way. Give a polar-opposite scene to the gratuitous Porg roast in TLJ.

I would just assume it is already there in a positive way.

There is absolutely a hopeful message in that scene, which I appreciate. Chewie realizes that he can't eat the Porg knowing that he/she was an individual with feelings and likely family to the sad Porg he just scared away.
What I would've loved to see, though, is a follow-up in EpIX where Chewie saves a group of animals from becoming food. Just as a side note somewhere along the road.
I wouldn't expect a Wookiee to go full vegan, but just to see him showing that level of compassion for beings he would normally kill and eat, to see his moral sense evolve and expand ever so slightly, would be so heartwarming. A truly uplifting message!

Never mind the Wookiees, we need to do something about the Ewoks!

With the exception of Chewie, Jabba, and now Grogu, no other character that has been shown eating, has been eating meat. So in essence, every character may be Vegan.

In TLJ. At least I assume he caught the fish to eat it.

Oh duh. I forgot all about that scene.

I guess he could have been a sport fisherman, and just mounted it above the fire place in his hut? [face_laugh]

Seriously though—while I’m one of the few who liked the sea cow scene, I don’t like the fishing scene. I would have preferred it if the Jedi were explicitly vegetarian.

Btw, when I was younger I thought the thing Yoda stole from him and tried to eat (“How you get so big eating food of this kind?”) was meat, but I think it makes more sense if it were processed food—so it could be anything.

I'm pretty indifferent on whether they're vegan or not, especially considering how little any of them are shown while eating.

I always thought Yoda took a carrot. It's what it always looked like to me.

On a side note, when Leia gives Wicket the snack, she gives him a rice cake. I would have stabbed her with my spear if she gave me a bland tasteless rice cake.

Similar to monastics of the various religions of the world, some are strict vegetarian, some eat eggs, some eat whatever is placed in their begging bowls, some drink or even make alcohol, etc. In the GFFA, if all of life is the Living Force, then every possibility must exist and does.

Ewoks are vegetarians, except for when they eat Stormtroopers.

Judging be what we know of them, they seem to be! As noted in Wookieepedia (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Lurmen), the Lurmen colonists on Maridun consume raw Jogan fruit for nutrition. Furthermore, they are pacifists and lead peaceful lives, harvesting giant seedpods to use for shelter and nourishment.

In other words, there's no exploitation of sentient beings and they always try to avoid unnecessary violence, even when some of them finally do fight back.
That sounds very vegan to me :)

Have any of the posters to this thread considered that in the Star Wars universe, plant based life may be sentient?
