Fanclub Kyp Durron: Endangering Fangirl Marriages Since 1994

Wait, what'd I miss?

 

I just wanted to come here to say that I recently reread the Jedi Academy trilogy as well as the NJO, and find Kyp more and more interesting (I love nuanced characters)
However, I would never be re-reading Legacy of the Force (Jacen's excruciating treatment (my favorite Legends character) is traumatic) and I don't plan on actually reading Fate of the Jedi anytime soon, so I have no opinion about Denningverse!Kyp (although the Dark Nest trilogy isn't entirely bad but personally I don't think it does Kyp justice)

 

Legacy of the Force was actively painful and rage-inducing to me, for the reason you listed and so much more. And I find the Jedi Academy trilogy to be massively underrated.

 

I had hoped that, after the Denningverse, readers would realize that KJA's books aren't that bad (they are actually mostly really good) but I feel like these stories are still very much underestimated

 

Could anyone suggest to me some good post-NJO fanfics with Kyp ?

You know what I hate? Kyp gets such a raw deal from fans sometimes. Anakin Skywalker placed a jackboot on the galaxy for over two decades but after killing Palpatine most people think he's redeemed and oh he's a Force ghost now. And note I do NOT consider Anakin Skywalker or Darth Vader to be separate characters or people. And yes he had a horrible childhood and I feel bad for him, there.

Kyp was practically bodyjacked by Exar Kun, and was also a slave on kriffing Kessel, but no matter what there's a lot of people out there who think he got off easy or is beyond redemption or crap like that. And it's honestly infuriating to me.

 

I, Jedi gets a lot of flack at times - but IMO it does showcase a "bodyjacking moment" quite well:


"You're good, Kyp, but you're not great." I held my hands up in a non-threatening gesture. "You're involved with someone who lost a long time ago. Don't compound his error."
"And who will stop me?"
I hesitated because Kyp's words seemed to echo within themselves. It took me a second or two to figure out that the echo wasn't a purely auditory phenomenon. I was hearing Kyp's voice through my ears, but the undertones were coming to me through the Force. We were not alone, which meant Kyp's mentor had come to aid his apprentice.
"I will, if you make it necessary."
An ancient sneer of contempt twisted Kyp's features. "Puny Jedi, you are of no concern to me."
Even though I braced myself for another attack, it did no good. Kyp's previous Force blows were like light breezes compared with a full-out gale. I slammed back into the wall with a teeth-rattling impact. As my body absorbed Force energy and fed it back out, the shield I'd created grew in size. More importantly, my surprise and survival instinct opened me up to the Force and allowed it to flow into the shield. Even so, Kyp's attack jammed the shield back against the wall and I watched stone crumble beneath its rim.
The safe area I had began to shrink, and my chest became tight as it compressed my ribs. I looked Kyp straight in the eyes and tried to shoot into his brain the image of the mask of hate he wore, but the world around me went black before I could tell if I'd had any success at all.

 

I was gonna post this on the unpopular eu opinions thread but I think I’m safer posting it on here.

I think I would have preferred it if Kyp Durron was the one to fight and defeat Shimrra instead of Luke.
Kyp unfortunately doesn’t get much time to shine and having him take out the big bad of the NJO would’ve been really nice for his character and I think would’ve helped to redeem his character in the eyes of many characters IU and some of the readers.
I haven’t actually read the Jedi Academy Trilogy yet but I’ve heard a lot of hate for Kyp which as @RK_Striker_JK_5 pointed out, is unfair considering everyone is happy about Vader in ROTJ and willing to forgive him, so I don’t see why we can’t forgive Kyp.

During the Denningverse he is sadly reduced to a background character who speaks at council meetings, he’s a middle aged man with scruffy hair who sits around in the Jedi council, says a few things and then becomes irrelevant. No friends, no girlfriend, nothing.
Its kinda depressing when you think about it. Kyp deserved better! I am actually planning on writing my own fanfic for Kyp some time in the future and I intend to do him justice.

Okay ramble over I just wanted to talk about Kyp Durron cause he’s awesome.

 

I'm starting to seriously ship Kyp with Danni (it's not totally my fault my friend writes awesome headcanons about these two)

Are my friend and I the only ones seeing the power of dannyp ?

 

I actually did for a bit, but I’m just wondering what would attract them to each other.

I’ve read about another ship with Kyp in a NJO AU fanfic with him and Alex Winger, and I thought they worked well together from what I read.

 

How does everyone imagine Kyp looking?
At first when I read LOTF I imagined him looking how he does in some artwork from the Jedi vs Sith Essential Guide to the Force, which wasn’t very good...

But after that when I started reading NJO, I now imagine him looking like Taylor Kitsch with long hair.


If Lucasfilm ever decide to have Kyp Durron in a live action movie, Taylor Kitsch would be the perfect casting choice imo. He even has the green eyes, which iirc someone made a post on this thread saying that KJA said Kyp’s eyes are green.

I know Kyp is pretty much entirely a book character apart from Jedi Academy Leviathan and a brief appearance in the Invasion comics (the latter comic having an awful looking Kyp) but I’d be perfectly happy if artists were to use Taylor Kitsch as Kyp’s official appearance, just like how the OT actors are the official appearance for Luke, Han, Leia etc. I’m probably in the minority on this idea of having an official appearance for a (for the most part) novel centric character, in fact I’m usually kinda unsure about the idea, but I think Kyp needs it considering most artwork hasn’t been too kind to him. Looking at you JvS Essential Guide to the Force and Invasion comics.

From what I’ve read on this thread, part of Kyp’s appeal for the female fans (besides being awesome) is that he is described as being good looking, which goes the same way with male fans and attractive female characters. So hypothetically if there were to be a live action movie and/or video game or a comic (preferably pencilled by Jan Duursema) with Taylor Kitsch used as Kyp’s appearance and the female fans are satisfied with him, then I think it would be a massive plus.

But yeah what does everyone else think? I’d recommend typing in “Taylor Kitsch long hair” on images to get multiple photos and a better perspective on his appearance.

 

And within a day our numbers have doubled!

 

@JediAvatar ... if you write a Kyp-centric fic, I will be there in a minute or less I think the negative attitude towards Kyp is strange as well, since I've never held one Liked him in the Jedi Academy, wished he had a stronger role in the NJO. He was tangled up with Jaina in a complicated way there until she wound up with Jag which I didn't mind. A story arc where Kyp knocks some sense into Jacen before the latter takes a wrong turn, that would've been a sane and fascinating plot arc.
