The real Sha Ka Ree was apparently
Sean Connery, who was considered for the part of Sybok. The name was an homage to him.
Personally, if they really wanted to honor him, they should've called the planet Zardoz.

I like Leprechaun 4: In Space.

    Nobody's perfect:p

Please tell me your pulling my leg...

Or it did happen and we simply ignore the specific conflict in question and accept the rest of the film.

Strange that the Enterprise crew can all canonically be idiots, as your claiming, yet their all graduates of a prestigious military academy/tech institute with a strenuous admission process. Strange that Spock specifically is a genius, Kirk specifically a seasoned diplomat and a brilliant tactician, and Scotty specifically an engineer genius. Strange that Uhura is an idiot, yet also multilingual, and Sulu stupid and yet also an astroscientist.

But sometimes the writing makes them do stupid things. God forbid. I mean, that trumps explicit canon information and the characters and all other elements of the lore!

Yes. Exactly. A writer can inadvertently make a character come off to an audience as stupid when their actually not; a genius might do stupid things, a seasoned politician might be easily outmaneuver on the senate floor, a brilliant strategist might be easily defeated, ect. But that doesn't change the fact that *in universe* the characters are still canonically geniuses, seasoned politicians and brilliant strategists.

Actually you do; your the one whose asserting that Star Trek ships are capable of such speeds when the canon clearly indicates otherwise, so the burden of proof is on you.

All three are in-universe explanations, and they work better then *not* trying to explain the inconsistency.

Wow, look at you, making up headcanon rationalization to explain a inconsistencies right after dismissing my headcanon rationalizations that were intended to explain the same inconsistency...

Not really. It would take us centuries to reach the nearest star and we still speculate on what it would be like their, what the planets might be like, whether we could survive, what resources might be present, if their is life, ect, ect...

No more then I'm arguing The Menagerie or The 37's didn't happen because of incorrect statements regarding the speed of warp travel present in those episodes.

    "Idiot plots" don't exist in-universe.

No, I'm just pointing out that it's not possible because it's not; it's in conflict with multiple sources establishing how fast warp speeds are.

    [face_sigh]

No, the slower speeds are the norm (I provided multiple citations proving this). ST V is the inconsistency here, not VGR.

You don't need to throw out the entire last part of the film. You just need to go "oh well, look's like Star Trek is being inconsistent again" and discard the inconsistent speeds and just accept that they somehow magically got the to the "center of the galaxy."

This isn't even the only time in ST **** like this happens. Captain Pike straight-up says in The Menagerie that their in the "Vernal galaxy" and that Earth is "on the other side of the galaxy" from the Talos star group.

This is actually a perfect explanation! I can't believe I never thought about it before.

"God" was an imprisoned Cytherian who had Sybok modify the Enterprise's warp engines, and Klaa rode along in it's wake Unexpected style!

Then how did Klaa get their? Did he use the power of his HONOR!!! to follow them like he's Prince Zuko or something?:p

But @Samuel Vimes, it doesn't take place in the same universe as the other shows![face_thinking]

    "Shpash, the Final Frontier..."

The novelization explicitly states that Sybok got the modifications to the shields that got him through the Barrier, from "God" (with Klaa detecting the modified shields with his sensors and copying them) - it's not a huge stretch to have modifications done to the engines as well.

And now the pics I promised:

Magazine has the interesting info that this ship was designed for an earlier version of PIC's development where the Romulans bombed Mars directly, not via Synths. In the final version of the show, it's only seen at the Artifact, ferrying Narek aboard the Cube.

Jumping back to the map topic...

I think one of the aspects I enjoy about this fan map is the use of the faction iconography and appropriate colorized regions. I'm a sucker for the former and enjoy the presentation of the latter. Even though it couldn't be kept up as well on a larger scale, one day I'm gonna make something along these lines, just with less fine detail (don't really need every planet listed there for general reference or overview, for instance) and a greater focus on the larger picture in terms of factional territory (as well as expanded to all four quadrants, even though it's less important for Delta and Gamma due to the former being much more fractured into smaller factions [outside of the Borg] and the latter being almost entirely the Dominion [AFAWK] with some Borg incursion).

To that end, I popped around Memory-Alpha to work up a list of the major factions, just because there are some that we only hear about once or twice (and, in some cases, never really see), despite being characterized as a significant power (or, at the very least, a race/faction that is on par with Federation tech levels, even if not in overall scale and influence). I'd also ignore random god-like aliens like Organians and Q since they're more X factors than actual players on the field. This list also constrains a faction to a single quadrant, even though they may overlap into others (especially since it's sometimes difficult to clearly determine which quadrant some of these border systems are in).

Making it collapsible to keep this post short:

    Alpha:
    -Bajoran Republic
    -Breen Confederacy
    -Cardassian Union
    -Ferengi Alliance
    -First Federation
    -Orion Syndicate
    -Son’a Command
    -Talarian Republic
    -Tholian Assembly
    -United Federation of Planets

    Beta:
    -Gorn Hegemony
    -(Iconian Empire)
    -Klingon Empire
    -Romulan Star Empire

    Delta:
    -B’omar Sovereignty
    -Borg Collective
    -Devore Imperium
    -Etanian Order
    -Haakonian Order
    -Hirogen
    -Heirarchy
    -Kazon Order
    -Krenim Imperium
    -Malon Cooperative
    -Night Aliens
    -Species 8472
    -Swarm
    -Trabe Fleet
    -Vaadwaur Supremacy
    -Vidiian Sodality
    -Voth

    Gamma:
    -Dominion
    -(Hur’q)

Missing any noteworthy ones (who aren't classified under any of the above, ie: Vulcan under Federation)?

I would also throw in the Tzenkethi for Alpha Quadrant - they were significant enough to have tussled with the Federation in the past, and for the Federation to have been significantly hampered if a war had started with them (as the Dominion tried to do).
Depending how you feel about them, the Kzinti might also be dropped into the Alpha Quadrant as well.
I would also throw in the Metron Consortium with the Beta Quadrant powers.

    Bomber?

Honestly based how it's used in Picard I assumed it was a shuttle or transport.

I hope you put the Cardassian Union in the right place:p (though even with the map in question the Romulan/Cardassian border inconsistency can be fixed if you assume the Cardassian Union wraps over/under Ferengi and Breen space)

(Also Ba'ku - I just noticed that the map doesn't put it with the Briar Patch/Klach D'kel Brakt, which is bit odd to say the least[face_thinking])

Well, that’s where the development info is interesting- it was designed to be used as a bomber but the script changed and it was reduced to a non-combat cameo role, essentially.

With that being the third mention about big changes to PIC (following the La Sirena escaping from inside the RBOP and Seven’s copilot in one episode to often mentioned fact that the finale was greatly redone which resulted in the copypasta fleet due to resulting limited post production time). It’d be very fascinating to find out what the original idea/story was for the season one day.

    EDIT-
Metrons seem too ascended and powerful to be a "mortal" faction- and it seems their subsequent reference on DS9 contradicts their TOS nature (ie: an anti-weapon, ascended race buying weapons from a lesser species) so they may not be the same as the Consortium (which would then make the Consortium seem too small scale to really include).

Tzenkethi & Kzinti (god, those are awkward to type, let alone together!) would be good inclusions, though. I wonder if the latter could be considered Federation, though, given their appearances on LD?

Yeah, there are probably inaccuracies with that map given that it's fan-made. I'm thinking more of taking it as a style inspiration, while following official map info once i research it more. So, if the official maps don't show the Cardie/Rom border, well, what was it you were saying earlier about discarding inaccuracies? ;)

EDIT 2- My Enterprise-F Refit that I pre-ordered months ago finally got back in stock and arrived today:

EDIT 3- Just to make it easy to side-by compare them, here's the F w/Fed livery I got back in May:

Maybe "Metron" is also a planet or star sector (the homeworld of the Metrons before they ascended and/or the location of their homeworld), and the "Metron Consortium" is a (business?) group based on/in (and thus named for) that planet/sector.

"Son of man, direct your face against Kzinti, of the land of Tzenkethi, the prince, leader of Lyrans and Caitians!"

Yeah, that DS9 reference always bugged me.

Riker's reference to them in Picard might indicate otherwise, but it wasn't entirely contrary.
However, we know from Nog that Starfleet will accept members of races that are not part of the Federation.
From other (non-canon) perspectives, both Star Charts and Star Trek Online has them as non-Federation - in fact, in the latter they are allies of the Klingons.
In general, it's a mess because of using someone else's creation within your own universe. :p

That’s my thought as well. Metrons themselves shouldn’t be included and the Metron Consortium is a small potatoes trade or pirate group not worth noting the territory of. If they didn’t share the name of a TOS race, we’d just assume they were normal randos.

Who wants to see Q appear in Star Trek Discovery? I for one do, would love to see him Snap Burnham to a different time period for a whole season arc. It could intersect with the Picard show since Q changes the timeline in season 2.

Unless it’s with Picard, Riker, Guinan or Mariner, any Q interaction feels forced with any other crews (ala Janeway).

Unless it’s a different Q with a different story function and personality, ala “Death Wish”.

Q shouldn't have known Mariner. She's lower decks, Q doesn't **** around with the little people But that might just be my dislike of Mariner showing through. This latest season has made me kind of hate her.

Whatcha talking about? Q's dynamic with Janeway is great![face_mischief]

Q's a god. Everyone is "little people" to him.

And besides, there's a bit of an implication throughout the past two seasons that Mariner was once a bit more important then she currently is; she's evidently been in Starfleet for a while, was demoted down before the start of the show, knows Riker pretty well, is hyper-competent and battle-scarred and used to run spec ops with a Klingon general.

Mariner is "lower decks" by choice. As she established in the first episode, she's had a number of "big" adventures.
