Returning to the subject of maps, I stumbled upon this article from 3 years ago that apparently details the working map they're going off of for the new shows, with this quick sketch shared on IG from Michael Chabon meant to convey the state of the galaxy at the end of VOY:

Which apparently echoes this supposedly official map:

But what throws me off is... isn't the Delta Quadrant meant to be the upper left quadrant, with Gamma in upper right? Or did I just have it mixed up in my head for some reason?

Setting aside the extent of the Romulan & Klingon Empires for a moment... I do like having Delta be on the fully opposite side from Alpha, and it allows for some of the VOY elements to bleed into Beta while also making it make more sense as to why the Borg didn't invade Alpha more frequently (shy conduits being constructed) compared to when Delta & Alpha are adjacent neighbors (also would explain why Romulans seemingly got hit by them first in The Neutral Zone).

Of course, on the flipside, I don't know if I care for the idea of the Dominion/Gamma being adjacent to Alpha, since it seems like they would have had more interaction than the Borg did with Alpha. Also puts a crimp (but not the kibosh) in my Hur'q/Klingons headcanon (obviously they canonically interacted, it's just not as neatly tee'd up to happen).

The latest episode of Prodigy had Holographic Janeway explicitly state that the United Federation of Planets is in both the "Alpha and Beta Quadrants" which was the first time I remembered it being referenced like that in a TV/movie show and not lit canon.

Lots of cool tricks revealed with the Protostar this week's episode
My favourite being the kids kept dismissing Holographic Janeway and she knew what was up and when they boot her back up for assistance she takes a long sip of holographic coffee. And the crew being thrown from their seats while she was standing still was grand.

Also the Protostar has a vehicle replicator! it kinda looks something like a 3D printer gadget but, wow, replicating entire shuttlecrafts and stuff. Probably would be needed for a ship that got stuck in the Delta Quadrant.

A "reboot" of Deep Space Nine need not include Sisko, Odo and Nog (though I'm willing to bet you could get Brooks to at least cameo if you offered him enough incentive and the quality of the story satisfied him), as all three have in-built outs; Sisko is with the Prophets, Odo is part of the Great Link and a shapeshifter to boot and you could easily say Nog is away serving in a different part of Starfleet.

Brunt, Quark, Voq (based on what we've seen), Soval...

Others don't appear to be particularly different (Jennifer Sisko, Sarek, the Halkan elder, Shakespeare if the dialogue is to be believed), and other people are outright evil but just have more of an edge to them then their Prime Universe counterparts (Ezri, Bareil, Forrest, Spock, T'Pol).

Honestly I always assumed he was an Android; he sparks when he's shot and there's weird red lights on his wound.

(granted, in reality I doubt that was the intent; organic matter sparks all the time when shot by phasers/disruptors and the lights could easily be something cast on Darren from somewhere else on set since de Boer also as a red light on her shoulder - but it helps reinforce the headcanon)

If the dialogue proceeding actually *is* what proceeds it in that scene (as opposed to the trailer splicing two different moments together) then it could very well be that Picard's attitude and unwillingness to accommodate his games pissed him off; Q's been shown before to get petulant and angry when people decide to lose their temper with him rather then tolerate his mischief.

Was googling basically why "Northerners" Romulans (the ones with forehead ridges) were the only ones seen in the TNG era (and that one Enterprise episode), and the smooth forehead ones are TOS era / TOS movies/ Picard. Interesting notion

That the "more urgent matters" for 50 years were a Northerner/Southerner Romulan civil war. And the Northerners ended up on top. So since we see a Northerner / forehead ridge on Enterprise mucking about with the Andorians as a precursor to the Romulan/Earth war, maybe the Northerners were blamed for the Romulan/Earth War so we see the Southerners in TOS era. Spock is able to walk freely among Romulans looking like a "southerner" although apparently they're a rarity (probably a Northern province) Everyone gets broken down to space bandits/layabouts after the supernova takes out Romulus.

I'm assuming since the Romulans barely got out of the Supernova the Remans did even worse.

^ I have a better, more logical solution: "Romulans do not discuss this with outsiders."

Civil conflict would be different approach- and tracks with their innately inwardly-looking, suspicious nature.

An alternative usually posited in ST EU is that they were dealing with conflicts along their far borders in the Beta Quadrant. Basically, they let the non-aggressive Federation be while they dealt with their aggressive neighbors. Said conflicts further Romulan technological development so by time we meet them, they're still on par with the Federation (as well as deveoping tech along divergent paths like singularity cores instead of warp cores).

@BigAl6ft6 Honestly I find it easier to assume that Northern Romulans represent a bigger part of the population (hence why they, overall, they appear more frequently the smooth-headed "southern" Romulans, and we did actually see them all over the place in TOS...
...they just all happened to be wearing helmets

The "matters more urgent" I've always assumed was the border conflicts with the Klingons mixed with a war of conquest against another, unnamed power located on the opposite side of Romulan Space that the Federation and Klingons never had a chance to encounter; would the Parthians really be all that aware of precisely *what* the Romans were doing if the Romans started ignoring them for a few decades so they could go invade Germany or Britain?

As for the Remans; they were extensively used as slave soldiers for centuries, so for all we know they had signifigently populations spread across the Romulan Empire in military settlements Jaffa-style.

Interesting moment in new episode of Prodigy

evil aliens in the planet mind control the crew so you end up with killer evil plant creature Janeway which was more disturbing than I thought it would be and lets Mulgrew be Evil Janeway for a minute which she is great at

Anyway, Trek movie 14 release date moved to Christmas 2023! And it has new writers: The Trek film hails from WandaVision director Matt Shakman, with Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires rewriting a script from Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

And so the Trek 14 development still spins. But this has a release date and writers and directors! So maybe?

I think it is a little late and little much to try to resurrect DS9...and this is coming from a major DS9 fan.

I think they tied it up nicely enough...ongoing adventures can be crafted in novels and comics.

    But...

A DS9 cameo in Star Trek: Picard could be AMAZING.

Trying to think of a "tie-in", nothing comes to mind immediately.

The problem with that premise would be after so much time, who is left on the station?

    Get a Quark cameo?

I suspect Kira is long retired.

    Bashir has probably moved on.

O'Brien is gone, Jake is probably gone, Dax...?

    ----------

If they just had a throw away scene with Picard in a bar, and suddenly it is revealed the bartender is Quark, and they zoom out to show the station in 4K awesomeness.

That would be all I need.

Trelane used a machine to work his tricks, though. Once it was destroyed, the Enterprise was able to escape (even if only temporarily). That doesn't seem like something a Q would need. Maybe Trelane's race is an offshoot of the Q. One with lesser powers. Q cousins, for lack of a better term.

That bottom photo of Shatner in space is fantastic, but I wonder how he kept the toupee on in Zero-G.
