    Best westerns ever:

    High Noon
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Once Upon A Time in the West
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

    And yours?

    The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
    McClintock
    Rio Bravo
    High Noon
    edit: Yes, Blazing Saddles definitely.

...I can't think of any more at moment but I do have a list somewhere.

Since this is brought up, I guess people are saying the superhero movies of today are like the Westerns of old...this I disagree with.

I'd add "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". For me, it's the best of Ford's Cavalry Trilogy, with one of John Wayne's best performances. Also, "Support Your Local Sheriff!". Not as funny as "Blazing Saddles", but a really funny Western spoof.
Another good one is "Bite the Bullet", a Western set during the Theodore Roosevelt presidency, when the Old West was already becoming a distant memory. Features some fine acting and cinematography, with a memorable ending.

Mostly the ones of Sergio Leone, but I have to admit that Kurosawa was right when he complained about the fact that For a fistful of dollars was a soft reboot of Yojimbo .
Probably The Bad The Good and the Ugly is my favorite.

    Fistful
is really good, but it's hindered by the fact that Leone was still clearly finding his legs.

Once Upon a Time in the West I love for the cinematography and some of the music, but I don't like the dialogue much, and some of the characters, so my feelings are mixed.

The Magnificent Seven is great, but it pales next to 7 Samurai.

Probably goes without saying, but a lot of old westerns come with asterixes next to them re: how they treat native peoples. The Searchers is pretty blatantly racist, for example. But has some of the best cinematography of the genre.

Jeez, I forgot that too. And you’re right. I liked it a lot. I’m also a sucker for shots of people running their hands over wheat fields, so they got me there. ;)

Man, reading through this thread and I feel the urge for another big binge of Westerns coming on soon. Maybe after I get the current film noir mode that I've been in with my recent watches out of my system. [face_laugh]

High Noon especially sounds really good right about now...
