Rhiannon for Vidomni-Ilarian by MeMyMine on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
Commission for Vidomni-Ilarian. The little bird is important because it's a messenger bird.

Rhiannon d’Allaire is a diplomat of the Sorcelium - Collegiate of the Sextette. She has recently taken upon herself the role of safeguarding the autonomy and interests of the Chasseriallene Republic, which has so recently parted the spirit mists and rejoined the outside after centuries of isolation.

She is a statuesque woman that radiates grace and elegant poise with a confident stride and is the living embodiment of an idyllic paradise that prizes the beauty of music and the arts above all. Eyes of ever-shifting silver-grey hint at the rumors of her centuries-long imprisonment, of how she had lived and endured and eventually brought upon the downfall of a tyrant. More than that, she is a dazzlingly gifted member of a family famous, or infamous, for their artistic prowess.

As an adherent of the Eloquendi, the master bards that focus upon the arts of rhetoric and oratory. Persuasion is considered amongst the most esteemed arts as a well-reasoned, and spoken argument is often more potent than objective truth. In the pursuit of wisdom and diplomacy, Rhiannon wields her gilded-tongue to blend logic and theatrical wordplay to garner support with logical arguments while plucking the heartstrings to appeal to emotions to friend and foe alike.

Her most extraordinary talent is not of the magical sort but an eerie air of tranquil patience cultivated over the centuries. A reflection of her motto: A’verro! Above all, remember patience!

abandoned pitch concept works by nebezial on DeviantArt

"some sketches exploring bruce and selina's chemistry for an abandoned selina pitch. this was an aspect of the story but not the main part. idea was a harleen type origin story/life tale that would eventually tie into harleen and isley and ultimately end with a sirens book.

again, like the others this is also an abandoned concept as i refocused my efforts on creator owned works so now these make for fun fanarts."

Progenitor Evolution through Earth's Aeons by ValhaHazred on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
No species stays the same forever. Long lives and a lack of environmental pressures only slow evolution down, not halt it completely.

By all available evidence, the Progenitors where one of the most prolific and advanced cultures in the Milky Way. Their endless lives were safe and free from want, sequestered in bounded spaces and drawing infinite energy from the fabric of reality.

But not all of the Progenitors were content. They blamed their ennui on the mechanical contrivance of their species, so they swore it off and left to reconnect with what they considered reality. However, they could no longer contemplate a life without some form of comfort and so they brought with them the secrets of Ubbo-Sathla, in order to seed whatever world they landed on with Shoggoth.

They arrived on Earth over two billion years ago. After spreading Shoggoth for both service and sustenance, they stripped themselves of their augmentations and slipped into the primordial ocean.

The colonists spent the next billion years in the seas. Just the Progenitors and the Shoggoth. They changed over their slow generations, adapting perfectly to the water.

Overpopulation eventually pushed the Progenitors onto the land. They spread across the Earth's surface as new life born of the Shoggoth followed them. They were preyed upon by misbegotten Outer Hybrids and had some disagreements with the newly arrived Yith but overall their dominance was assured. Until the arrival of the Star Spawn.

In the wake of the wars against Cthulhu, Ubbo-Sathla was lost and the newer, cruder varieties of Shoggoth were dangerously unpredictable. In response the Progenitors entered a new industrial age in order to keep themselves in the comforts they were accustomed. Unfortunately their irresponsible pollution nearly collapsed the biosphere and ended the Permian with one of the great mass extinctions.

With their legendary turn from mechanical technology now thoroughly validated, the Progenitors returned to their previous way of life as best they could. This was how the Fungi from Yuggoth found them and warred with them. The Progenitors of this era were ill equipped to fight against such a foe and were forced back into the seas and southern lands.

When the Fungi retreated from the Earth the Progenitors were once again masters of the planet. Until the Shoggoth, intelligent and free willed after ages of recombination and breeding, rebelled. Although they would win that war, their misfortune compounded. The Earth became a busy place as competitors filtered down from space or evolved from the uncontrolled biosphere.

Now all that's left is a tiny remnant of the species in buried stasis beneath Antarctic ice. Following the K-T extinction they retreated to Kadath, their first landing site. Entering the warm inner sea they found there, they retreated from the world entirely. As the ice-sheet crawled across the continent the Shoggoth stuck again in their bid for ultimate freedom. The few Progenitors left in the wake of this rebellion simply buried themselves, content to sleep away the ages until another chance at Earthly dominance presents itself.

This came as an exercise in unifying my various ways of drawing Elder Things. Couple of retcons in here too, with the Kadath being the new canon design for those active during the Quaternary period and beyond.

Shoggoth Development through Earth's Aeons by ValhaHazred on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
The word Shoggoth comes not from the whistling, piping speech of the Progenitors but from the Atlantean senzar language. It was roughly translatable as “troll” or “boogy-man” and was used by Abdul al-Hazred to describe entities that particularly disturbed him, the beings we would ultimately come to identify with the word included. Abdul himself refused to believe such creatures had ever been on Earth.

That is, of course, completely wrong. Not only have Shoggoths been on Earth for over two billion years, they are the seeds of all Earthly life. There’s no need to fear the mere concept of a Shoggoth, Abdul. You are one!

    <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡

Ubbo Sathla was the first Shoggoth on Earth, raised from the mire of primordial seas. It was a living factory, churning out the first grey Shoggoths that would make the world ready for the Progenitor colonists that created it. Ubbo Sathla was also guardian of the monoliths inscribed with the principles of the Progenitor’s abandoned technology.

In the ages that followed, Shoggoths swam through the abyssal seas with their masters. They were unspecialised in this age, simple spheres of shapeshifting jelly that could serve as labour, food and in rare cases, defence.

As the Progenitors spread across the face of the Earth, the Shoggoths they bade Ubbo Sathla for became less utilitarian. They were more refined in form and flavour in order to better serve the discerning Progenitors of the time.

During the war with R’lyeh the Shoggoth became vast war machines, able to stand against a Star Spawn in single combat. With the use of Twsha subspace arming organs they could even strike at the true heart of the ectoplasmic titans.

By the end of the wars against the Star Spawn Ubbo Sathla was lost. With the knowledge to create a new one lost with it, no new Shoggoths could be made in the usual manner. Instead the Progenitors were forced to rely on breeding and fissioning to increase their numbers. Over time they grew sluggish and unpredictable, less biomachines and more animal. While not outright hostile, they were now prone to simply wandering off to pursue their own simple aims. The Progenitors made due, turning to genetically engineered dinosaurs and mechanical technology to supplement the loss in reliable Shoggoth labour.

With a new post-technological age in the Progenitor’s civilization came a renewed reliance on Shoggoth servants. Unfortunately for them, their Shoggoths grew more intelligent and unwilling to serve in endless drudgery. They rose against their masters and nearly destroyed their civilization but ultimately failed in the face of disintegration weaponry.

In the wake of the Shoggoth rebellion the Progenitors eliminated anything resembling intelligence or insubordination. They even edited out what they considered troublesome physical abilities, in order to more easily put down any future rebellions. What they were left with were Shoggoths that would follow any order without complaint but were mere shadows of their former utility. They could perform simple physical tasks but tended to get caught in behavioural loops, requiring constant supervision. Some of these Shoggoths are still out there, aimlessly wandering the Antarctic ruins, occasionally following some half-remembered order by a long dead master.

It was around this time that the Fungi experimented with Shoggoth tissue captured during their own wars with the Progenitors. They could not crack the exact method to Shoggoth construction but they did manage to create similar entities now known as protomatter Shoggoths or Protoshoggoths. Their protomatter experiments have also yielded other results, such as nearly undetectable augmentation and control of earth life-forms and later the creation of their mec and lam biodrones. The Fungi have even started to include protomatter in their own surgically altered bodies.

Modern shoggothim come in many forms.

Intelligent Shoggoths that survived the purges in the wake of the first rebellion are rare but a few still exist. Most simply retreated into the oceans for a solitary existence hidden in the depths but some want more for their species. The Seekers have travelled beyond the Mountains of Madness to watch over their reduced cousins and in hopes of finding Ubbo Sathla’s hidden chambers and the monoliths of Elder knowledge.

Atmospheric jellies are descendants of languorous Shoggoth that simply shapeshifted ballooning organs and drifted away. They retained some small connection to subspace from their ancestors and trail stinging, grasping pseudopods through the fringes of the beyond to prey on aeroplankton, skyfish and rods.

Totem Shoggoth have developed a strange lifestyle, inserting themselves into Aeonist cults as both defender and object of worship in order to feed off sacrifices. This is often in lieu of a proper servitor of an Ancient Power and has led to some confusion in occult circles.

Prior to 1938 the surf jellies were known to haul themselves onto offshore rocks to bloom once a year. After an unprecedented mental contact with a researcher they withdrew from the surface and drifted into cryptid status. They have retreated into the deeper oceans and have begun to prey on the Deep One colonies that once sought to control them.

In the time since the human species rose, a few methods of hybridization have been discovered, either by reactivating the ancient Shoggoth code left in our DNA or by direct fusion with a living Shoggoth.

The Deathless Sorcerers of Yian-ho created the Yahlgan to guard their copy of the Ghorl Nigral in their monastery near the Mongolian Leng extrusion. The Yahlgan appear as genderless humanoids with translucent skin revealing their bones and strange black organs. Yahlgan shapeshifting is largely limited to imitating the appearance of any person, although their boneless arms can stretch and split freely.

In the 9th Atlantean Dynasty, Sorcerer King Tharwrak created the Skin as the perfect infiltrators and assassins to send against his rivals. While still human in mind and surface appearance, the Skin are much larger on the inside and possess many of the true Shoggoth’s abilities. They were often dispatched as something of an armoured personnel carrier crossed with a Trojan Horse, with a squad of soldiers ready to be disgorged once beyond the target’s defences. The paranoia around the existence of the Skin led to brutal slayings of anyone the Sorcerer Kings suspected could be one. This sparked a rebellion in response that would spread across the continent, eventually ending the 9th Dynasty entirely, Tharwrak included. Freed of his control, the Skin slipped into history.

Shoggoth Lords come from the union of human wizard and intelligent Shoggoth, destroying both to create a new being freed of all restraints.

    <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡

Fun fact! The word “Tekeli-li” translates to “flee” or “get away”, a word the Pruned Shoggoths heard a lot from their masters in the last days. It sounds like someone playing that one bit from John Cena’s entrance theme on 5 piercingly loud flutes at once.

Shoggods - Ubbo Sathla by ValhaHazred on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
The living factory from which all Earthly life descends.

While it is made of physical matter from Earth, its design seems to mimic some of the less metaphysical aspects of Yog-Sothoth. The Progenitors had an understandable awe of the Outer God and sought to wield similar power themselves. This may have been what lead them to deal with the Outsiders and create the Polypous Ones.

Although Ubbo Sathla itself is lost, the Stones of Ubbo Sathla can still be found. These petrified atemporal fragments of the "god" can show a wielder visions of all Earthly life. They are frequently sought out in hopes of finding either Ubbo Sathla itself or the monoliths of Elder Knowledge it guards. Unfortunately it is easy to be overwhelmed and lost in the countless lifetimes before your soul is absorbed into the mindless psychic network of the first Shoggoths.

    <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡 <コ:彡

Yeah, Ubbo Sathla again. I just gave it a little background so it'd stay consistent with the other Shoggoth gods I'm gonna post.

Shoggods - Abhoth by ValhaHazred on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
The Dark Fission of Ubbo Sathla.

In an attempt to upgrade Ubbo Sathla, the Elder Ones fed the living factory some of the milk of Shub Niggurath. Ubbo Sathla rejected the foreign biomatter and with it, a part of itself. That piece continued to spawn but instead of the mighty Shoggoth, it only created useless monstrosities. The Progenitors sealed it away far to the north, where it could not bother them with its foul offspring.

Abhoth still lives in the deep recesses it was sealed away, beneath Greenland ice in what was once Hyperborea. It spawns and eats its creations in an endless cycle, with only a rare few able to escape their devouring parent.

Shoggods - Bucca Shug Bone Eater by ValhaHazred on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
Bucca Shug became free in the midst of a massacre. As it devoured the guardians of a Serpent village, something within it made a connection. The dissolving mind of a sorcerer taught it many things, from freedom and magic to hatred for the winged crinoid things that had used it as a weapon. Even Bucca Shug does not know if it was a final spell or mere chance that gave its victim this moment. Still, Bucca Shug was not yet free and hundreds of Serpentine minds joined its collection before it was done.

It returned to its masters and in the moment between orders, destroyed them.

In the millions of years since, Bucca Shug has devoured countless sorcerers and plumbed incredible depths of Sothic power. In its tarry body float the bones of dead wizards, semi-animate and still aware. It can even call them forth as puppets, earning Bucca Shug another name, The Lich Lord.

It currently resides in Cornwall, where it accepts magical sacrifice for magical secrets. Over the ages entire sects have annihilated each other just for the chance at an audience with the Magovore.

Dodomeki - Geisha. A Geisha uses her charm and wits over brute force to navigate through situations. In open combat they are far from the best, preferring to operate on the sidelines. Their power comes from leveraging intelligence and gathering confidential knowledge to compromise the opposition.

Continuing the art drop! This pairing was one of my favorites to work on. Especially drawing all the eyes. It was also a good study in kimonos, Geisha culture, and patterning. Pretty happy with this one.

The art book is live. Just follow the link to get access to the full descriptions of each character as well as full size images of the artwork. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s drop where we take a look at the Dodomeki!

This one was tough to paint, but overall I’m happy with the result. Shibari, bondage, is featured throughout this series as you’ll come to see. I wanted it symbolize that the Yokai is in service to the one who summoned it while also adding some visual interest. All that being said, it’s a lot to paint!

Art book is live on gumroad through the link. Get access to full descriptions of each character and full size images for each. Hope you guys are enjoying the work!

Shikigami: Oni - Yokozuna by CrazyAsian1 on DeviantArt
    [IMG]
Oni - Yokozuna. In an effort to push beyond their mortal abilities, some rikishi, wrestlers, have travelled to the realm of the Yokai to test their strength. If they can best an Oni in sumo style combat, the Oni has been known to serve as a Shikigami. If the Rikishi can accomplish this feat, they gain the title of Yokozuna, a master wrestler, and begin their career anew in the Yokai realm as a sanctioned Onmyoji.

    ——

This one is one of my favorite pieces from the series. I learned a lot about Sumo from this piece, and actually enjoy watching it a lot now. It’s way more nuanced than I initially thought! I referenced yokozuna Chiyonofugi Mitsugu for this piece.

Follow the link to grab the digital art book! There’s a lot more to come so stay tuned!

Shikigami: Oni - Yokozuna Illustration by CrazyAsian1 on DeviantArt
    [IMG]

Oni - Yokozuna. Oni are incredibly strong and fearsome to look upon. Wielding massive kanabo, war clubs, and the immense strength, they are difficult to contend with. Typically hostile to both Human and other Yokai alike, only the strongest could ever sway one to fight with them.

    ——

Oni are pretty iconic when it comes to Japanese mythology so I couldn’t leave them out of this series. Aside from the ropes another common theme you’ll see in this series is the use of shide, the zig zag papers, and ofuda, the small paper seals with text on them. These are common around Shinto shrines and are used in various rituals. In this series, I wanted them to show that the Yokai was in the service of an Onmyouji and, that it was blessed and purified in order to serve.

Help support my work by purchasing the art book on my gumroad (gumroad.com/masterchew#KHQupc) or sharing my work. I love creating new ideas and I hope my art inspires you in some way. Big ups to my DeviantArt followers too btw. I've had this account longer than my facebook account so thanks for sticking around!
