They could make movies about other force users who aren’t officially Jedi though.

Sure they can. Anything goes, as long as the writers say so. I just hope they come up with good stories that make sense.

And it wont make sense to do that with the rules of Jedi.

Ahsoka wasn’t a Jedi after TCW but she still had lightsabers.

Back in 1983 we were led to believe that Luke was literally the last Jedi, but in the current cannon and Legends there were multiple survivors of Palpatine’s purge still alive when the second Death Star was destroyed. So it wouldn’t surprise me if we discover that Rey is not literally the last Jedi either. There could be others out there she doesn’t know about, Grogu for instance.

Yeah at this point I think when Yoda calls Luke “the last of the Jedi” in RotJ he’s just saying that to provoke Luke into fighting Vader again. Wouldn’t be the first time a Jedi mentor straight-up lied to him…

Yeah, she was. Don't buy into Filoni's semantics game.

eh, she got fired, rehired then quit, so technically not a Jedi. I can buy it.

    You shouldn't.
It's not a job, it's a life path. You don't need to be part of an order. You just need to follow the path. She quit being a Jedi for about a week, in season 7, then she was back at it.

    Don't play Filoni's game.

Filoni plays with the rules. But Rey should be the last Jedi.

But in canon, it’s been established that “Jedi” is a specific order of force users that you join (and can leave), and that there are other life paths associated with using the force for good (Guardians of the Whills, etc). The life path is communing with the force with good intentions. The Jedi is an order that cultivates that. But it’s still an order, and can therefore be left or not.

BUT, she effectively plays the role of a Jedi in every story she’s in afterwards. Heck, Filoni even labels Ahsoka a Jedi in Mando, so…I get what you mean re: semantics. I just like the world-building potential of having multiple factions of force users.

Personally, I’m into the idea of a new order called Skywalkers…

Rhetorically, the word "last" has been often used throughout history to refer to a small group of survivors, not a literal single individual. And the word Jedi is used both in a singular sense and plural, so the phrase last Jedi has a ton of ambiguity built into it historically and semantically.

It’s also wordplay, as “last” can also mean “immediately previous”…as in, the last Monday. The Last Jedi.

In which case, the alternate title of the movie could have been “Luke Skywalker.”

Ahsoka is basically a Jedi after clone wars. Hell, she’s still following the Jedi code when she meets Din Djarin and Grogu.

as far as I’m concerned, guardians of the Whills are basically Jedi as well.

That's the point. She's not just a force user. She specifically acts like, dresses like, carries the weapons of, and follows the code of a Jedi. She's NOT a different Force user faction. She's a Jedi. And I disagree that someone who follows the path of the Jedi needs to specifically be a part of the temple. As long as they're following the path and the code, then that's what they are. If it walks like a duck...

This entire semantics game of Filoni's started because George told him that Ahsoka had to die at the end of TCW, because there weren't supposed to be any Jedi around during Luke's time. Luke was supposed to be the last. Filoni wouldn't accept it, and came up with his cockamamie semantics argument that she's not "technically" a Jedi if she leaves the Order. Then George sold the company and Filoni was given free rein to keep her around forever.

Shakespeare already answered this point for us.

“What's in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet.”

The reference is used to state that the names of things do not affect what they really are. It is their nature that defines them. And in the case of people, also their actions and choices.

And I just realized we're in the Lindelof thread, in an off topic debate again. If anybody wants to continue this, let's move it over to the Force user thread.

The Guardians believe in the Force and dedicate their lives to serving the Force, and the lives that make it grow.
