I'm not very good at writing angst, but maybe I can try this...

    I'll take number 2, parent-child.

Nice! I can work with that, as it’s something that happens throughout the game with certain kinds of enemies anyway! :p

My entry for the Hurt/Comfort Roulette Challenge featuring hypothermia and not one but two parent-child relationships in Leia Organa and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren as well as Leia Organa and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader because I just couldn't resist some of the marvelous intergenerational angst that feels so foundational to Star Wars:

I love that you were able to work in two parent-child duos in your fic! You're in the index! (I actually added your fic last week but neglected to reply in this thread. :p)

How is everyone else doing? Any other ideas percolating? [face_batting]

Good luck to everyone on their challenges! You got this:cool:

@ViariSkywalker Thank you! Something about the Skywalker extended family just seems to inspire intergenerational drama and angst;)

I haven't figured out an actual story yet, but for some reason (even though it doesn't literally fit my prompt of "buried alive") this is giving me vibes:

Awesome, I've got your fic in the index! :D

You can still pick a number! The deadlines in this thread are more like goals anyway, and you're more than welcome to submit your fics after the deadline has passed! :D

With that said... I'm going to go ahead and extend the due date for our Hurt/Comfort Roulette by a few weeks, just because. So let's make it our new goal to have our stories finished by Thursday, July 13th. That's doable, right? [face_batting]

Excellent! [face_mischief] Let me know which of these five relationship types you'd like to choose from (parent-child, siblings, romantic pairing/lovers, friends, or enemies), and then I'll give you your prompt!

[face_laugh] I had the same thought!

Well, I've finally started writing that angsty Ezra & Sabine story that was inspired by the First and Last Lines Challenge for my pentathlon in the Fanfic Olympics and it is coming along better than I expected so far (crosses fingers, knocks on wood and throws salt over my shoulder in hopes that I didn't just jinx my progress :p) It's strange to say, but I'm actually enjoying writing this story, even though the misery level is pretty high for one of my stories! Angst is still fairly new genre for me, and in a lot of ways, I feel like I did when I started writing romance: does this sound right? Does it sound like it was written by a 12 year old or a robot? Am I laying things on too thick? I don't think that I've crossed the line from angst into character torture, but my poor Ezra is going through a lot in this story. He's facing imprisonment, nefarious cloning experiments, soul-crushing Imperial officers (looking at you Thrawn) and his recurring abandonment issues. And I guess a lot of this stems from my reaction to Filoni apparently retconning the end of Rebels so that instead of Sabine coming for Ezra about 5 years after he disappeared, it seems to be closer to 10 years :( . I could understand 5, what with the war and everything, but 10? That's twice as long as Ezra was with the Spectres! He went through so much, finally found a family and happiness, and then gave it all up to protect them....and it takes almost 10 years for them to find him. It makes me want to smack Filoni on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. (No! Bad Dave!)

So all that being said--any tips on keeping angst from turning into gratuitous wallowing in misery? Like I said, I don't think I've crossed that line yet, but I don't want it to turn into a series of "...and then another very bad thing happened to Ezra."

I'll be back with an actual response to your question asap (I'm currently traveling but hopefully will have some online time later), but until then, it's fantastic to have you here, and I'm looking forward to seeing how your fic develops! [face_mischief] [:D]

And of course, if any of our resident angstmongers want to jump in with some tips, go for it! ;) [face_batting]

@Raissa Baiard Congrats and I'm glad that you are enjoying writing in the angst genre! [face_dancing]

As for my suggestions on keeping angst from descending into a gratuitous wallowing in misery, the following techniques have been helpful for me and may be useful for you as well:

    1. Balancing some of the angst with traces of humor. Even if it is dark humor, that can lighten the tone, and maybe give your readers a chance to chuckle or smile.

    2. Consider including a little ray of hope to brighten the darkness and despair. Sometimes that little ray of hope can even emphasize and throw into sharper relief the darkness of the rest of the story. It's like chiaroscuro in a painting.

    3. Perhaps include a sweeter or mushier moment with family, friends, or romantic partners somewhere in the midst of all the angst. This can work especially well if you are going for a hurt/comfort type vibe (which I admit is a guilty pleasure of mine...)

    4. And sometimes I will write events in stories that can feel like a sad parade of one bad thing happening after another. When I do that, I will normally lampshade it in my sarcastic New Jersey fashion (like "oh, yes, of course, this happened when everything was already going wrong, because why not:p) because I think irony makes everything better;) And I think it can sometimes be true to life in that it can feel like when things are going wrong, everything horrible takes the opportunity to pile on at once. So I believe it is a feeling that people can reasonably have and therefore that characters can legitimately experience as well.

Ultimately, I think whatever you end up writing will be wonderful, because you are a fantastic author[:D]

I'm not the angsty-most angstmonger out there, but I do love me some good angst. [face_devil] I may not be the perfect person to answer this question, but I would say that it sounds like you may just need to let yourself write something angsty, if that makes any sense? Sometimes very bad things happen and they keep on happening - and it's okay to tell those stories! Tragedy is a whole genre of story-telling for a reason, and the more modern version of a whump-author fills the role of something similar. There can be something cathartic, as an author and a reader too, to explore feelings that we all know: grief, uncertainty, fear, despair, and turn the dial up, so to speak, in the safety of a fictional setting. Even if just for the artistic endeavor or to explore the human condition, that has its place too, as does really increasing the dark so as to make the eventual dawn all the brighter. So don't be afraid to really embrace the angst!

When it comes to staying on the hurt/comfort side of hurt/no comfort, I agree with everything @devilinthedetails said. Including any more happier emotions just makes the angst taste sweeter, and should result in an excellent fic.

Agreed! Just let yourself write without worrying overmuch, and I'm sure it will be awesome! [:D]
