I like Alvarez. I like Scott. I love Alien. But, this movie is going to have to prove it.

Romulus star Cailee Spaeny confirms that the film is set between Alien and Aliens

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaney tells Variety’s Michaela Zee. “They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

Actually, Cameron changed the design in his film. It's not the original.

I am more excited for the new Alien show on FX than I am for the movie.

I believe it was a greatly missed opportunity for Ridley Scott to make his Prometheus sequel trilogy and follow up Covenant with another 2 movies. Or at least one final movie, to wrap up all loose ends. Say what you will about Prometheus and Covenant, but the stories in both movies are freaking great. And all the plot twists, and how it opened up a whole new world to explore. I wonder if we will ever get another chapter after the end of Covenant. The only thing I didn't like was Elizabeth Shaw's off screen death. I really wish she had survived and become the protagonist of all of those films (including potential sequels I mean).

I also hope Romulus proves to be a great movie.

Probably not as damaging to children's psyches as Gashlycrumb Tinies but it has potential.

    Sounds promising

The tv show is just gonna ignore all that Prometheus stuff.

I suppose. Though the best thing about Prometheus was the visuals. Possibly the best-looking Alien film of all. So not too thrilled about that being one of the main things he’s rejecting.

Though I agree with him that the evolutionary aspect is more interesting than the bioweapon one. Even though bioweaponry is a big topic today.

Not necessarily ignore- just not expand upon or directly integrate. Remember that the whole bio-weapon origin is unknown to those on Earth/other colonies (and wouldn't be suspected until the Nostromo encounters/describes the Derelict). So while David and the whole Engineer encounter is happening out there somewhere in space, any other encounters with Xenomorphs would still be under an umbrella of mystery (and would extend from what is presumably the original evolution/development of the Xenomorph, vs David's recreations).

The Alien RPG has the xenomorphs existing independently from the Engineers, indicating that the Engineers were so enamored with them that they tried to make them as well. It's heavily implied that the "black oil" was derived from the xenomorphs.

Even the tech reversion is explained; an anti-space terrorist group unleashes EMPs and such on Earth that wrecks technology, so there's a movement back to more 'analog' equipment being safer and more reliable.

From an aesthetic standpoint, reverting the style is a good choice, as it really worked in Alien:Isolation.

The Alien series is planning for multiple seasons. But Hawley notes that he and FX are striving for quality over quantity, and are not looking to milk the series for as many seasons as possible. He has a beginning, middle and end in mind for the story, but doesn't know exactly how many seasons that will turn out to be.

I think I confused the new movie with the Hawley series - but they are apparently not connected in any way?

Hawley's most recent season of Fargo is really top notch. I'm glad he's doing this.

The only connection is that Ridley Scott is producing/executive producing both. The Hawley series is set 3 decades before Alien (so, potentially earlier than Prometheus, or just about concurrent to it), while the Romulus film is set between Alien and Aliens.
