Discussion Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars Movie - NOT FILMING April 7th, 2024 (Blame Fredrik!)

I think the Empire got revised to be mostly alien racist instead of Human racist, which makes more sense.
There were plenty of women who supported fascism in the past and who were members of the Nazi party, it's good IMO to have characters like Dedra Meero & Governor Pryce because it shows us that anyone can be corrupted by the lure of power & manipulated into believing they're doing good.



Lucas' problem in the OT was that the rebellion wasn't diverse enough with alien races. I wish the scenes with women, Mon Calamari & Sullustan pilots at the Battle of Endor would be included because then you'd have more than just Ackbar & Nien Nunb with a bunch of human male pilots representing the galactic fight against the Empire.
I mean, where were the Twi-Leks?

 

Fascism is something which is unique to each culture which adopts it. We know that in this universe sexism and racism amongst humans is supposedly non-existent. It makes sense that those would not be the prejudices which define this type of fascism.

 

I also hope this movie has a strong and well written villain.

 

I am kind of amazed this “story” is still dominating the Star Wars discourse. I guess it makes some sense because there is nothing noteworthy happening otherwise, but it’s impressive that LFL could have Sharmeen drop a little <30 second clip and that’s enough to get people talking for more than a week. I don’t know if “worst fans ever” debates were what they hoped for, but if they’re following the truism that all publicity is good publicity then I guess they got what they wanted.

Not really. To state Solo failed because they recast Han Solo is, at the very least, not evidenced. Indeed, stating that whilst actively promoting a Star Wars product featuring multiple characters that were successfully recast, seems somewhat lacking in self-awareness, if not reality.

The mistake would be to assume 'logic' in their reaction. That's kind of the point being made.

Yes... I think it is largely due to the vacuum in news/updates. Given the recent plot rumours that have surfaced on-line, I'd like to think Lucasfilm had the wherewithall to lean into them and start giving some information soon.

 

He'd be easy to defeat: Just distract him with a CGI rendering of Luke, and then when he bursts into an uncontrollable crying fit, defeat him.

Maybe. But it still makes him a joke. If locking himself up in a room filming and editing videos of him crying for views is what he wants from life well then I guess that's his prerogative.

Will be funny though if he one day he has to get a real job and he goes into the interview and they ask him about his work history.

 

MSW says that not only has Steven Knight not turned in a draft for this movie but he hasn’t even started writing the script yet.

Rey Skywalker film - December 2026
Dawn of the Jedi film - May 2027
Heir to the Empire - December 2027

Based on the announcement today.

 

I think they’ll pull grogu out of their ass in time for holiday 2025

My offer to buy tickets for a poster if this film ever is released was a safe bet.

History will show this was just an idea thrown against the wall before LFL committed to Filoni's vision.

That actually sounds a bit as if this movie isn’t in active development at all. I mean … they haven’t even begun writing? WTH.

 

This film excites me because it is being helmed by a woman. Generally speaking, I think female characters are more believable when written/directed by women.

@anakinfansince1983 I never was a fan of Katie Lucas being as involved in TCW as she was. Basically all she had on her resume was being George Lucas's kid. It seems she has pretty much disappeared from Hollywood these days (which is probably for the best as I wouldn't like seeing her continue to get jobs over people with better resumes just because she is the daughter of someone as famous as GL.

 

My guess is that they are testing their Star Wars box office potential with the Mando/ Grogu movie now first. Because its a more safe bet than this film atm. And because Grogu has reached his peak, and they should capitalize on that now. Also because the Mando/ Grogu film is taking place earlier on the main timeline. If could prove to be a good move. Disney has lost its box office crown for the first time since 2015 ( funny enough the year when they had the biggest film) and are under constant anti wokeness critisim, which is not going to get any better. Just from reading these last pages on how a female director is treated by the so called SoMe anti woke brigade, you could smell the problems this would hit with a female actor at the front of the film as as well. If the Mando/ Grogu movie fails financially, then i would really be worried. But lets get behind this and hope it will not.

 

I imagine they can make a Mandalorian and Grogu movie for a far cheaper amount than they could a New Jedi Order movie so yes that likely might be the case.

It's really not Star Wars though. The entire movie industry is in flux right now with people not seeming to be as willing to go to theaters as they once were and many movies underperforming the last couple of years with as of now nothing in sight that that will turn around.

They probably won't make it for cheap though. If you are gonna do a movie then is going for the spectacle. And being DIsney, its probably gonna have at least 160 mil budget
