i don’t particularly like retcons or characters coming back. But did I enjoy what they have done with Boba and Maul? Yes. I’ll give bad batch that same chance

Realistically speaking, Maul should not have come back, but:
    1) It was Lucas' decision, and he is the creator of Star Wars, so it's easier for some to give it a pass on these grounds;
    2) Maul didn't have any character whatsoever, and he had little impact on the story, other than killing Qui-Gon and indicating that the Sith returned.
However, Maul should have been an exception to the rule, not become the rule itself that anyone could survive... And even then, Lucas made sure that he didn't just come back solely for the sake of fanservice and exactly like he was in TPM. Maul lost his sanity and became an animal by holding onto life. He became a monster trapped in the abyss, feeding on corpses and garbage. Surviving and coming back had a price. There was a story there, even if the decision itself was questionable. Now what has Disney done? They had Reva in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show stabbed with a lightsaber as a Youngling, and she somehow survived. Then she was stabbed again as an adult and she survived again! Then we have Sabine stabbed and surviving like its nothing. None of them paid the price for surviving. They just did. But everyone points at Maul, as if they are the same. No, they are not. Maul was a literal Sith Lord, an apprentice to Sidious himself, and even for him, surviving took an extremely heavy toll. Emperor survived getting vaporized. He didn't even "survive", because using the term "survived" would be wrong, since he DIED, his physical body DIED, he was resurrected, and he returned, somehow... and his return actually undid the entire arc of the six films and blatantly contradicted the mythology of Star Wars as laid down by Lucas, specifically that the Sith can only survive extreme injuries, but there is no life for them after death, and after the physical body had been destroyed — which is why they cling to it so desperately with cybernetics and alchemy, and why they seek immortality — it's over for them. Only very few Jedi have mastered the ability to manifest their consciousness after death. That is something the Sith are not capable of comprehending, something they fundamentally cannot achieve. Ventress' survival is not only a blatant inconsistency, because it is explicitly stated that she's dead, but it also undoes her character arc in Dark Disciple. It would be like resurrecting Anakin in flesh after the events of Return of the Jedi, and saying, well, he actually didn't die, he survived Luke burning him on Endor. And, of course, it's not Filoni's character and story. Dark Disciple was developed with George Lucas, scripts were written by Katie Lucas and Matt Michnovetz. And now he messes with it, even though he has no right to. He is not in George's position, he is not the creator of Star Wars, and it's not his story to mess with just because he feels like it. More so, he said in the past that both Dark Disciple and Son of Dathomir are the immovable pieces of story, alongside with the original 6 movies and 6 seasons of Clone Wars — because they are all George Lucas' stories that he had a direct involvement in. But no, he messes with it. It's not enough that Disney cancelled The Clone Wars when they bought the franchise, they keep messing with the stories that had already been told. I am more than sure they probably promised George that the show would go on after the buyout, which is why the cancellation was sudden and mid-production. The same way they bought George's sequel treatments, only to never use them, and promised to keep George as a creative consultant — only to ignore all of his input, and making him go away. The same way they shut down LucasArts, and cancelled 1313 and other videogames that were in development at the time. The writing was on the wall since day one.

Also it was Lucas’s decision to kill Boba Fett, but I don’t see people throwing a fit over that. At least in that “they are going against Lucas’s decision”

ideally here what they do is have Ventress die but then be resurrected and keep all of DD in tact.

Considering how Boba Fett was handled by Disney... Yeah, Boba should have stayed dead. Better fate, IMO.

Ventress should not be resurrected. That would undo her character arc and damage all the development she's had. Her story was over and done, as intended. If you want to celebrate Ventress' character and honor the story (which I am all for), then just faithfully adapt Dark Disciple, according to the scripts originally written pre-buyout by Katie Lucas and Matt Michnovetz that were approved by George Lucas, the way it was supposed to be before the show was cancelled.

If they wanted to use an established character, there are so many to choose from... like Barriss Offee. Whatever happened to her? Maybe Filoni will remember that she exists in 10 years or so.

The real reason I am on board? Cause I think it’s incredibly stupid that the person who killed Ventress was Dooku.

I was more referring to the general statements by people here (and elsewhere) about "everything Filoni and friends does sucks, it isn't Lucas, etc." Because I think what people forget is that the first time they saw Star Wars they were likely kids. The vast majority - almost all people - who are Star Wars fans started out seeing it when they were kids. And when they were kids, they were just excited about cool movies (and shows depending on age). Now that they've gotten older it's "the whole series is ruined because it isn't what I wanted." It was the same thing when the prequels came out, it's been that way for the sequels and the TV shows, and it probably always will be.

When I watch any new content - or rewatch old content - I go back in mindset to being a kid again and just enjoying some cool stuff. Yeah, I can discuss and debate it in depth on here (and have written hundreds of thousands of words about it on these boards even as a teenager) but at the end of the day it's enjoyable stuff if people just accept it as entertainment instead of trying to enforce their will and saying it's ruined and they hate it because of xyx. I mean no one has a gun to anyone's head forcing them to continue consuming the content so...

I think it’s just people in general taking fiction to seriously. Now I am a pretty easy guy to please but I don’t really like TROS all that much. But I don’t think about it often and I move on.

now two things related to the bad batch and Ventress coming back.

Let us wait and see how it is done before we pass any real judgement.

I don’t see how there is truly a difference between Lucas bringing characters back from the dead and Filoni doing it.

Filoni does it more. But it’s the same principle either way.

I suppose, that it is a Star Wars rhyming thing, because he also killed Komari Vosa, his first Padawan. I think that wasn't so good, because Ventress already knew from "Witches of the Mist", that she wasn't a fighting match for Dooku, and there wasn't much skill developement for her from TCW s. 3 until DD IMHO, to make her believe she could win that fight.

If you're referring to my admittedly jaded views, you can blame it on the countless examples of vandalism, carelessness and superficiality that they inflicted (and continue to inflict) on the franchise. And also, I'm a fan, not someone who simply likes or casually enjoys Star Wars.

This latest example of a dead character coming back is no longer shocking or controversial. It's worse: banal.

And my issue is first and foremost with the claim that they are honoring her previous fate. It would have been better to not say anything than to make such a claim.

Unironically, yes. That's the privilege you get when you create the franchise.

Edit: this isn't meant as an attack TCF, I've always enjoyed our interactions, I just disagree with you here

I can’t post this in my rereading canon thread without it being a double post, but I just reread Son of Dathomir. Thought I would post my thoughts here as well.

    Som of Dathomir

you know it’s funny despite this releasing under Dark Horse every time I go to my comic store I can find a copy with the marvel insignia.

I really love the art in this one. It’s just really pretty.

son of Dathomir I would wager less people have read this than Dark Disciples as I have always felt that in terms of visibility of material it goes

    Movies
    Shows
    Games
    Adult and young adult novels
    Comics
    Everything else

it’s interesting here the syndicates seem done with the shadow collective, but we know they still work with maul after this. Hell they work with Maul for years during the empire’s reign he’ll post Seige of Mandalore he regains control of the Hutts as well. Anyway maybe an inconsistency maybe not. What is though is Dathomir

this looks way more like it does in earlier legends than it does in TCW. Just something interesting I noticed while looking through the pages

something else I noticed. The Mandalorians during this series keep screaming about victory or death which reminds of the final episode title of TCW victory and death.

I like how the maul bs Mace Windu fight lasts all of one panel.

also bold prediction that came into my head with the future of Star Wars. The nightsister mothers in Ahsoka will do some nightsister shenanigans and resurrect Mother Talzin a third time.

I kinda wish this was a book instead of a comic. Well I mean I wish it was finished but you know we cannot get what we want. At least we have it in some form.

but yea if you want to pick this one up it’s pretty easy now. I know for a bit it was out of print but now it’s easy to get the marvel reprint.

Of course. The original Dark Horse print ran out quickly and the license went to Marvel shortly after they published it.

Why I find it more interesting is that marvel still publishes it. And the comic stores still pick it up. At least my two local stores only have comics from the last like 2 years minus some really popular stuff such as the walking dead or invincible or the boys.

so the fact that you copies can be found at all times speaks well to how well it sells even all these years later

Just a quick question involving the Shadow Collective in the deleted/re-done story arcs; what hiding places could the Black Sun, Pykes, and Drydan Voss go to during the whole siege event? Half of their little nooks got destroyed in Son of Dathomir and may possibly be on Republic watchlists due to Mauls petty war against Palpatine.

Point of clarification: Maul only told the syndicate leaders to go into hiding, not everyone involved. An important distinction as that's a much easier task than hiding several intergalactic organizations.

As for where they hid, it's a big galaxy; it could have been anywhere. As we see in The Bad Batch, the Empire's got quite a lot on its plate and doesn't have the manpower initially to be pursuing anyone other than Jedi, and even that is challenging for them at the start. Plus, the most high-profile of Maul's collective, the Hutts, bailed on the operation when Darth Sidious captured him on Mandalore.

    I
t was around 2,000 votes cast in this. I would love to see a poll on a site that includes more poll options than YouTube so you could include more of the obscure choices. Again dark disciples, son of Dathomir and Crystal Crisis are at the bottom of my list as we have seen them in some form

According to GL's audio commentary on the 2004 ROTJ DVD he considered shooting new footage of Boba Fett escaping the Sarlaac, but didn't end up doing it to save the scene rythm or something. So from a certain point of view that confirms Boba is alive according to GL.

Forgive me for not finding sources for this but, if memory serves, I believe Mr. Lucas has stated multiple times that he "regrets" killing Boba, to the point where it was kinda expected that he'd make a comeback someday (no matter who was in charge of the franchise). :boba:

I don't recall him ever saying that. Boba had already survived past ROTJ in the comics and other licensed material, and he was aware of that.

What he said is that in hindsight (after making AOTC), if he could go back, he would have made his demise in ROTJ more impactful; and that at one point he considered doing a shot of him climbing out of the pit, but quickly discarded that idea.

As it is, he had the sarlacc actually swallow him ever since the 1997 SE.

With more time to Google, I looked around and you're right, I can't find an exact source to support what I thought I remembered. My brain must've squished the separate quotes together, and two plus two equalled five. Thanks for the correction! :)
