Anybody else annoyed by how Padme's hair, which is supposed to be waist-length, is suddenly shoulder-length and then waist-length again, sometimes in the SAME SCENE??

    LAZY scene prep ...

    Hmm ... lessee ...

I don't know how to post screenshots, so sorry about that. BUT ...

When Padme arrives for the podrace. Look closely during, "You've never won a race." When they show her from the back, her hair is only shoulder length. Like they decided they weren't going to show her from the back so the hairdresser didn't need to put the long fall on ... and then, they showed her from the back. When clearly, her hair is supposed to be past waist length, or she would never be able to do those other styles. All the other scenes in that outfit, look how long her hair is. "You've never won a race"? Short when shown from the back.

ROTS, "You are so beautiful," when she's out on the balcony. Short, short, short. The rest of the time? Long, long, long.

What was wrong with the continuity person who was supposed to be checking all this?

To be honest, I never cared to look at her hair...

She had short hair on the balcony?

    Was "short" redefined recently?

This topic reminds that an episode of TCW (I think it was Pursuit of Peace) revealed that Padmé’s hair during much of the series is actually some kind of hat/wig/hairpiece that she just wears over her normal hair :p

Shoulder length IS much shorter than waist length.

As someone with waist length hair, I should know.

And here I thought it was the other way around! I guess my shorter-than-waist-length hair makes me think backwards.

I never noticed her hair length. The style and her costumes were elaborate enough. I think George wanted some kind of Leia-bun-lightning strike with Padme’s look, but it never got iconic. Maybe the Theed gown.

I digress. Didn’t notice the length — loved her hair pieces and outfits. I may have secretly wanted to wear them.

It looks like it went past her shoulders during the Pod Races.

I always notice hair because I am handy with mine and can do all but two of Deanna Troi's hairstyles on my own head.

I can do the Padme seashell hairstyle on my own head. Used to have a tutorial up here in Costumes. Maybe it's still here.

The style in the pic above galls me because the fall is attached to the BUN. If you're putting your hair up in a bun, the only reason not to include all your hair is because you have so much (as Padme clearly does) that if you put it ALL up your head will get sore. To prevent that, you leave the free hair dangling at the nape of the neck, NOT the bun.

Or you just do what you want because the absence of hair laws means you're allowed to have it your way.

It's because Natalie was filming V at the time as well.. or are you referring throughout the Trilogy?

Thanks for the reminder...this detail annoyed me, to be honest. Did not help the episode in my eyes

Yeah ... that really is annoying.

I mean, the point would be what?

Although ... it's what professional geisha do. The apprentice geisha have to actually do the hairstyles, and once they're senior geisha, they all have wigs made.

That may be what inspired the show then. I would think that it would apply to the Empress and concubines of the ancient world as well to some degree.

As far as the movies... I always assumed that her handmaidens helped Padmè with her hair.

    Let's hope so!!

Even with help, some of those styles would take an hour to do. (Unless it's just a hat, of course.) Who would have that kind of time??

In TPM some of her hairstyles plus makeup plus costumes did remind me of the Geisha style. I think that was quite intentional. Same as Vader's helmet was somehow inspired by a samurai helmet. Lucas took lots of inspiration from real-life cultures. He said so himself.

I assumed the hairdos when she is in regal costume as Queen Amidala are wigs.

Obi-Wan’s hair continuity in TPM is distracting in some scenes as well. And then there are those scenes where the film is reversed and his braid swaps sides.

And of course there’s the sudden Padawan braid Anakin has at the celebration parade. Did they transplant the hair they cut off the top of his head?
