This is my first time posting on the Jedi Council forums. I have been skulking about, on-and-off for some time, and enjoying myself. So...why post now? I need your expert advice and input. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this board, well-versed in Star Wars fandom and sci-fi in general. You are my people. I will be launching a Kickstarter campaign in July with the goal of opening an old-school sci-fi store in the Denver, CO area focused on Star Wars and Star Trek, called "Redshirt & Nerfherder". I have been working on this for some time and have quite a few unique and/or neat ideas I would like to incorporate into the store, many of which involve ways to build up a popular sci-fi community that centers around the store. I did not want to come off as spammy, so I did not include this contact info here, but if you like, my Facebook and twitter are on my profile. These accounts are brand new, so they haven't been built up much as of yet. What would you like to see in a store of this kind? What would make you want to frequent this store?
Not being from that area, I've got to honestly say, "not much." But, if you're going for that destination type of vibe, I'd look into these stores, one that was in New York called Obscura, or another from New Jersey called Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash. Both of those were unique and interesting enough to get their own TV show.
Welcome mate, I haven't been to a geek store in a while. I prefer things that a subtle, like earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets that hint at my fandom without yelling it like a t Shirt would
That is super helpful. I have been eyeing some officially licensed jewelry. I will be sure t include that. Thanks!
@Sithalicious (Awesome name, btw) What kind of jewelry, did you have in mind? I've got necklaces from, ThinkGeek (Gwad, I miss that company), Entertainment Earth, and believe it or not Etsy has a great selection.
Everything in the store will be exclusively Star Wars and Star Trek only, so basically logos, ships, weapons, but on jewelry haha. All officially licensed, though, so probably no Etsy.
Wow, well i just checked both Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store, both came up with nothing. Might keep checking to see if they get some drops. Also check may consider checking eBay. I see people selling ThinkGeek merch from time to time, which was official.
There are several other wholesale distributors that have a little bit of this sort of thing here and there. I will likely have to order from several different ones to get any sort of selection. It does exist, just not in the mass quantities other types of collectibles do.
I actually prefer quality jewelry, not the stuff that will go black on my neck or fingers. Silver or gold as I'd rather pay more for something I will wear for years to come and can wear for a couple days in a row. I'm essentially lazy and taking my jewelry off at night is beyond me.....
Alas, I'm not even in the right country to frequent your store, let alone the right region, but I like the sound of this. Events like gaming tournaments, trivia showdowns (which fans know the other franchise better?) or watch parties (compare and contrast an episode of TNG with an episode of Mando) could be something really special. If the warnings on Blu-Ray menus are anything to go by, that last one might need a special licence, though. Anyway, the best of luck with your business!
