My absolute favorite part of the article is the insistence on referring to Gandalf as “The Stranger” as if they could have possibly made it any more obvious.

 

So our first look at the flamboyantly dressed Tom is a pic of him looking like one of the Blues talking with Gandalf who shouldn’t even be there anyway…

As for the Stranger…

The big thing is that Gandalf has many names, among all the people of the west, the north, and the south. But that he never went east. But Saruman and the Blue Wizards went east. The Blue Wizards also might have come during the Second Age in some drafts. Since he’s still called the Stranger, they think it would fit better if he was any of the other wizards.


… But we also know Tolkien wrote that the 5 wizards had come to Middle-earth more than once, and had their memories taken/diminished along with their powers diminished on subsequent visits.

For example, we know Olorin/Gandalf, Melian, Curunir/Saruman, Radagast, and the Blues helped tutor and guard the First Elves in the Far East, after Orome found them and before the Eldar began their journey to the West (and probably during the Valar’s victorious war against Utumno when they learned of the Orcs and then chained Melkor for three ages before the ages of the Sun.)

LOTRO also plays with this idea, in a cool storyline where one of the Elves (or rather in the appearance of a mighty Elf lore master) of the Second Age who came help fight Sauron was actually Gandalf, and Gandalf slowly remembers this after the Ring is destroyed through flashback gameplay, because it brought him pain since they let him keep too much power and remember too much then, and he also made a painful sacrifice then, which if he remembered would dishearten him, but Elrond and Glorfindel knew. That it was probably why Gandalf originally didn’t want to be one of the Third Age Wizards, because according to Tolkien “he was afraid of Sauron” and felt unfit for it again, but eventually found the courage again, and the Valar reduced all their memories and powers once they left Valinor, and appearing as old human men this time. So the show could be doing its own version of that.

 

In new article, Viggo Mortensen is open to come back if its right for the character of Aragorn. So deepfake or makeup?

 

A mix of both, I guess.

If they’ve got the deepfake then all they need is a hallway and they’ll be set.

It would be silly to do it otherwise." It seems to me that nobody's really told him that the story they'd be doing would be set before FOTR. I don't think he was even thinking about the usage of things like deepfake, makeup, or CGI when he gave that answer.

 

Just slap his younger face on a poorly paid double and call it a day.
