I just wanted to double-check a few things for the long vignette (because 12 weeks feels more like 12 seconds these days, or maybe that's just me :p).

    1) I know the rules say it's okay to double up with other challenges, so I just wanted to make sure that applies to the long vignette too, or if it has to be entirely its own thing.

    2) Is there any sort of criteria for how substantial the 'story in a story' needs to be? For example, if it's like 100 words out of 2000, would that be enough to meet the requirement?

    3) Does the story-in-a-story have to be its own thing, or can it just be the characters telling the story/watching a movie/whatever? For example:

Character A started telling the story. "Once upon a time, stuff happened..."
    *
    Stuff happening
    *
    "The end," Character A said.

    vs

"Once upon a time, stuff happened," Character A said. "Stuff happening..."

"And then other stuff happens," Character B chimed in... etc.

EDIT: One more, sorry! So things like "The Itchy & Scratchy Show" or "The Krusty the Clown Show" from The Simpsons would be considered stories-in-stories? Since they're shows that the characters are watching in-universe?

    Thanks so much! :)

[face_laugh] That last question remided me of a hilarious L/M story where they told about how they met. [face_mischief] That framework would seem to fit and would be vastly entertaining. :)

lol it's definitely not just you! Sorry it took so long to get back to you on your questions; DRL has been a bit much this week 8-}. I hope these answers make sense, but if not, just let me know! :p

Yes, that applies to the long vignette, too!

Nope, there's no percentage or word requirement; as long as you write a story within a story and the whole thing is 2,000 words or more, you're good! ;)

I'm going to say that both of those examples could work for the story-within-a-story structure! From all the examples I've seen, it really is a flexible narrative device that has been used across a diverse array of stories. Some works use the nested story to reveal something about the wider story, but others use it purely for entertainment, with no deeper meaning. So I think your own response to this prompt could exist anywhere along that spectrum. :)

Yes, those both count! I hope that helped! [:D]

Also, I thought of another example of the story-within-a-story yesterday when I was talking to Gabri, one that might be a bit more illuminating than some of the examples I used in the prompt post: The Princess Bride! The film and the book are both excellent examples of the story-within-a-story structure at work. [face_batting] I'm going to go back and add that example to the original post, just in case it helps clarify the concept further. ;)

Wonderful! I have yours in the index! :D

Awesome, so glad to see another response! You're in the index! ;)

Yay, I have added your thread to the index as well! [face_batting]

I've also posted my own KR thread, We Still See Embers, featuring my OC Skydaughters and starting off with Supernova.

I am very late to the party, but may I present my attempt at this year's Kessel Run: "Fire Across the Galaxy", beginning with "Mechanically Inclined", which features KB and Fern from the recent series Skeleton Crew.

I've posted my KR thread, "Location, Location, Location." Between OCs like my Antarian Ranger and my Resistance scout, I'll be aiming to bop around to weird places in the galaxy. Theoretically.

Heck yeah! I've got you in the index as well. ;)

We have a little over 24 hours before our first week's stories are due - still plenty of time for 100 words, and maybe even 1,000. ;) Does anyone else want to take the KR leap? [face_batting]

Fantastic work, everyone! Your Runs are off to a most impressive start! Before we get to this week's prompt, I want to remind everyone that you have until tonight at 11:59pm EST to get your Week 1 responses finished and posted. If you're still working on your entry or trying to decide whether you should join the challenge, there's absolutely time to do so! ;)

In the meantime, here is the next prompt...

    * * Week 2 * *

    • Write a story between 400 and 800 words using third-person omniscient POV in which a character teaches another character something.
    • Word limit = 400-800 words
    • Entries due Monday, January 27th at 11:59pm EST

Third-person omniscient point-of-view, in which the narrator has a bird's eye view of the characters and the story, has declined somewhat in popularity over the last century, and you probably won't find it in fan fiction as frequently as first-person or third-person limited/close third-person, but like all POVs, it has several advantages that make it unique and well worth trying out at least once. Not to be confused with the dreaded writing faux pas "head-hopping", an omniscient narrator allows the author to reveal the inner thoughts and reactions of multiple characters in the same scene, offer insights into the world of the story, and can even let the reader in on information that the characters themselves do not possess. Still finding yourself stumped by this POV? Check out this article from Reedsy, which includes several excellent examples and is a great primer overall for third-person omniscient.

And that’s all for now! Your Week 2 entries are due one week from today. Remember to post your entries in the same thread that you started for your Week 1 fics. You may also, if you wish, post a link directly to your Week 2 entries here in this thread. Any questions can be posted here or sent to me via PM. Happy writing, everyone! :D

A quick thank you to @ViariSkywalker for linking to that article on third person omniscient! I read it in its entirety and found it very interesting and informative!

I am also pleased to announce that I, too, have posted my entry for Week 2[face_dancing]

It is a piece for the Narnia fandom titled The Horse Teaches a Second Boy to Ride

Thank you for the link, I've never been able to tell the difference between limited and omniscient. :p

In the first verse of Bruce Springsteen's song "Lost in the Flood", we get perspectives from at least 2 different characters. We see "Gunner"'s thoughts about the town he's returning to, but then he's with a second person ("Sticker smiles sweet...") while another person addresses him, and we get a line from that person's POV ("And I said, 'Hey, gunner man, that's quicksand...'"). So would that be another example of third-person omniscient? Just trying to figure out if I'm on the right track or not. :p Thanks!

You're right on time! Index updated! :D

You're welcome! I'm very glad it helped. [:D]

Just from looking over the lyrics, I'd say that fits for third-person omniscient! In this case the unnamed third person is the "omniscient" narrator; he's the one telling the story and seems to have a wider view of the context than the other characters involved. The chorus sort of dips into first-person POV, but at the same time, it's all part of a story being told by the narrator, so yes, I do think the song works as an example of third-person omniscient POV. I hope that helps! :)

And then so many Week 2 fics already! Amazing work, you guys! [face_dancing]
