It really depends on how the next few years go, right? If the Liberals cock things up with Carney at the helm (and I do have extraordinarily high hopes that he'd do a great job as PM, but "events, dear boy, events" are the sad undoing of any government) then yeah, they'd probably ratchet up the anger, right-wing populism and cultural conservatism even more.

If not... what do you do? "Canada is working relatively well and the government has done a good job at staving off American imperialism while improving overall quality of life for everyone... please vote for us, the proto-fascists, so we can blow the whole thing up" isn't exactly a compelling sales pitch, you know?

I'm not wholly convinced that it was an accident, but yes, it's clear we are treating this as not remotely being a joke as a matter of policy.

I feel like we should stop using the word acquire to describe these goals. He wants to conquer Canada.

I’m just so tired of hearing threats from this rapist felon blowhard.

This relationship is ruined for at least a generation. I’m furious, everyone around me is mad. That sentiment didn’t disappear with the tariff pause. There’s simply no fixing this or going back. When even the Canadian business class is saying to retaliate as harshly as humanly possible to tariffs, and Bay Street firms (including mine) are taking losses in the millions to preemptively cancel American contracts, there is just no repairing this. The damage is done, the trust is gone. We are finally working on bringing down provincial trade barriers, we are finally pursuing proper trade diversification and economic decoupling. There is political will to do it, and voters are months away from giving a government the mandate to do so.

Whatever bond has existed between Canada and America, that’s over.

"See? Canada hates you! But only I can protect you from nasty Canada."

So goddamn obvious, but you know it'll be believed.

LMAO, Trump is now calling for a tariff of between 50%-100% on Canadian cars, because he said that we "stole it from them", referring to the automotive industry. This waste of orange flesh is going to tank his worthless country's economy in his insane efforts to hurt ours, and all he's going to get for his efforts is the long-term loss of our trade as we look elsewhere.

Didn’t America steal the Canadian car industry? Or am I mistaken. Aren’t there literally zero companies who are headquarter in Canada who make cars? Like I am sure there are cars mad in Canada, but it pales in comparison to American manufacturing. Off the top of my head I know Rivian makes all their cars in America, the Yukon is made in America. As well as the Ford F-150

Generally, the indication something isn't true is already given when it's attributed to Trump.

Local provincial election coming up. Green Party candidate seems nice. Anyone except Jessie Lumsden re-elected. I do not care you were on the Ticats. Even sent a flyer to my house with Doug Ford behind him, ick

My riding currently has an NDP MPP, who I do not like now nor when she was my city councillor. Polling has it as a tossup between the ONDP and OLP in my neck of the woods, so I'm hoping I get the OLP member I'm voting for. That would be my bare minimum win, since there's no way Ford is getting ousted. I have a lot of optimism about avoiding a Poilievre led federal government, but God knows Ford is going to be running Ontario for the next 20 years.

    Wait, Jesse or Neil?

So like a lot of Canadians, I've been avoiding buying American products as much as humanly possibly. The main things so far have been checking labels on groceries and cancelling Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify Premium. What I'm stuck on is Blu-rays and movie theatres. The majority of movies I watch are American, but the places I buy/watch them are Canadian (i.e. Canadian record stores and movie theatres). Before all this nonsense began, I liked to support these businesses, especially since the pandemic when it felt for a while like theatres and physical media might die out completely, so I'm divided. Is it counterproductive to avoid paying for American media if you end up hurting Canadian businesses in the process? [face_dunno]

I believe the standard thing is that in the first two weeks or so, the studio gets most of the money but then the studio's share drops. In which case, you can make it a point to not see movies in their first week or two so that when you go, more of your ticket cost is going to the theatre instead of the studio.

There is quite a lot of Canadian workers in front and behind the scenes of various movies and shows. A lot shot in Canada etc etc. If you want to boycott something America, boycott Budwiser. Also it is awful

I think beer in general is awful, so I don't need to boycott any of it. :p

It's tricky, right? Because everything is so deeply integrated. And like Al said, a lot of that stuff is shot here – one of my neighbours is a crew member on all of the Star Trek series they shoot in Toronto, and one of the side streets I cross to get to work is frequently used in movies and TV series (I accidentally ended up in a background shot in The Boys because I mindlessly walked down the street in the middle of shooting while a production assistant was waving her arms at me to stop).

I think it's definitely good to support your local theatres, and if you want to stream, Crave and CBC Gem are both good Canadian options with quite a bit of CanCon on them. And since so much of what we watch is American by the sheer virtue of volume, making a point to watch/listen to CanCon is always good, too. We make better media than we often give ourselves credit for, whether it's a newer series like Shoresy or North of North, or a movie like Universal Language that was robbed of a Best International Feature Film nomination. And supporting the local arts/culture of wherever you live, within the means that you are able; live theatre, smaller cineplexes, concert venues, etc.

Also, just as an FYI, Spotify is a Swedish product/company, not American!
