He didn't, but the Fifth Circuit in staying the original judge's order referred to the Comstock Act as a "hey, SCOTUS, if you want to remember this law is still on the books, all abortion is illegal..."

The Legislature continues to deliver on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ agenda with a House panel agreeing to move a bill that allows insurance companies and providers to deny paying for or providing care to patients who have a “conscience-based objection” to it.

Despite concerns that the bill (HB 1403) could allow physicians to discriminate against female, gay, transgender and minority patients, members of the House Health and Human Services Committee voted 11-5 Monday afternoon to approve the bill.

The bill defines “conscience-based objection” as an objection based on a sincerely held religious, moral, or ethical belief. The bill does not require physicians to refer patients who are denied care to a different provider.

The last time the crazy hard right tried to put the ten commandments back in the 1950's they ran into a huge problem. Not only do different sects of Christianity use different wording on the ten commandments based off their own version of the Bible but also so does Judaism and Islam. I cannot wait for these ghouls to get sued by different sects of Christianity, Judaism and especially Muslim saying their version of the ten commandments needs to be displayed. The MAGA courts will say though that the Evanglical version is the only that is allowed further showing they are all just some crazy christian cult.

@VadersLaMent Which is a very unpopular bill not so much with the wackos in Florida (though it isn't as popular as DeSantis thinks) but with physicians. And that is even with the wacko Florida surgeon general trying to drive out competent physicans. You would think DeSantis would be more worried with insurance companies quietly continuing to leave the state in mass because its going to be one natural disaster after another there thanks to climate change and they don't want to deal with continuing to pay out but nope. Even some conservatives are saying he blew it by not focusing on economic issues (which we all know he isn't good at either but has the perspection he is) and instead going for wedge social issues that are unpopular and/or people don't care about. There are lots of reasons to go after Disney from their insane ticket prices to poor pay for many of their employees so much some workers at the theme parks live in their cars. Making a few movies and TV shows that are more diverse after decades and decades of almost all white casts along saying, "yes people of the lgbtqia community" are people as well. He honestly took an issue that he could have been seen a leader on (attacking Disney for unfair business practices) and instead made The Mouse sympathetic. That honestly takes skill to the point you wonder if deep down he even wants to be president. It's kind of watching Elon destroy Twitter so badly you think he is intentionally flopping the company so it goes bankrupt. But considering how incompetent and cruel they are, it's not intentional sabotage.

    Meanwhile, this made my week:

Not sure I'm comfortable with the author's framing of "civilization," but the relevant point here is if you're a US American in your 30s, you are almost 4x more likely to die than someone in comparably wealthy countries. US Americans of all ages are significantly more likely to die than their counterparts. This of course affects poorer people a lot more, and Latinos and African-Americans are more likely to be lower income.[face_flag]

Not only that, but I have to wonder if the FDA can simply issue new rules if the Supreme Court suspends the current ones and force the whole process to start all over again. I don’t know how much or even if the Administrative Procedure Act’s regulations regarding a 30-day public comment period before issuing new rules applies to the FDA, but the executive branch may have options if the Supreme Court goes down the most restrictive path.

Supreme Court just issued a full stay of the Texas judge, allowing mifepristone to remain fully available.

Vote was 7-2. Alito and Thomas dissented. No surprise there.

Thomas has to go and Alito needs to retire.

4x more likely? Sounds like we’re winning. Suck it Europe.

Who the hell wants to live in Switzerland anyway?

Thomas wrote a separate dissent that consisted of him saying "People are mean to me, waaaaaah"

Awww, poor misunderstood corrupt rich Supreme Court Justice.

EDIT: Read Alito’s dissent here https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/21/politics/read-supreme-court-medication-abortion-order/index.html

    It’s….concerning.

    Joking, folks. O:)

Alito and Thomas wrote together "People are mean to us, waaaah".
No joke. They waste a page or two complaining about criticisms by other Justices how they make shadow docket rulings without actually explaining themselves. It's pathetic.

It is pretty wild that he reasons he should refuse to rule because he wants people to break the law.

Like… what the entire ****? (To his entire reasoning, because I don’t think he’s saying that he wants people to break the law)

He’s basically arguing that since the government can legally circumvent a stay, that he’s… saying that he can’t agree to one.

    Ugh… irritation is I.

That's modern fascism for you. Whine about increasing ethnic diversity, whine about women being less subservient and more autonomous, whine about increasing LGBTQ acceptance, whine when there's backlash to rolling those things back; whine when they're out of power, whine when they have an enormous amount of power, whine when people question why they have a billionaire friend with a signed copy of Mein Kampf.
