Ke Hu Quan has been making a comeback these days, so yeah, I guess Data could be the villain in the next SW movie....

Wasn't there a recent book where a super-computer kinda was? I want to say it was a Lando-based book (he was at least a major character). I obviously read too much, I can't remember which book is which.

To this topic, though, I'm obviously biased, but I miss the days when there were players in between the good guys and bad guys making things even more interesting. Characters like Karrde weren't the main protagonists, but they could certainly get in the hero's way and make things more interesting/dramatic. They could also help at times. Seems like recent Star Wars have pretty clear sides, and even those doing shady things are firmly in one camp or the other. You'd think in a galaxy there'd be more looking out for number one than the greater good.

Those types of characters do better at hanging int he morally neutral territory the further away they and the heroes are from pitch-black evil characters and organizations like the Empire or the Sith, or even just explicitly evil new characters - Star Wars isn't actually a Black and White Morality story (which I'm sure you're aware of), since it tends to have a lot of characters who'd prefer to sit in the Grey... but if the writer is being competent with the "usual suspects" of villains, than your Landos, Karrdes, and Kargas end up being forced to react to the type of undeniable - and maybe more importantly for them, micro-managing and interfering - evil and either go good or break bad.

Though I will say that I think Disney-era LFL seems to struggle a bit with where their supporting and sometimes even lead characters *are* set-up to be in a more morally grey situation, out of either favoritism or a "shyness" about moral ambiguity, especially in the Favreau shows:

    - Boba Fett arguably would have been much better served if they either embraced the crime lord idea or explicitly had him desire to be a simple, self-serving if exceedingly pragmatic feudal lord instead of the really vague pseudo-"heroic gangster" idea they toyed with.

    - Most of the Mandalorian factions didn't even make it to screen in Season 3, but even the two that did had a LOT more moral ambiguity (in relationship to their larger culture and the Galaxy) to their pasts and traditions than Favreau was willing to acknowledge or exploit. We could have had Din Djarin dealing with the complications of a glory-and-pride based amorality from Bo's crowd of Mandos on one hand, a reactionary and anti-intellectual but honor-bound cult in the Children of the Watch and the Armorer on the other hand, both descended from a terrorist group of mass murderers in Death Watch, and all while trying to get around Gideon's dudes... but instead we got a lot of no-name action figures all treated as broadly heroic skipping past any uncomfortable lore.

Like... I still think Mando "wild cards" could still fill out a lot of Star Wars stories with a fun, frustrating edge for any heroic characters having to deal with their "Blue and Orange Morality" - the kind of thing where a Jedi or New Republic guy would find dealing with purely mercenary "looking out for number one" dudes like Karrde (who you can reason with) preferable to dealing with a Mando warlord who might be a great help or a deadly enemy based entirely off of whether or not he thinks you challenged his martial masculinity - and whether you beat him if you did.

Jedi just throwing their hands up in consternation at Mando warriors just always being about glory and prestige in combat is a both hilarious and highly dramatic idea we need more of.

Literally the most recent Star Wars show had an AI as a central enemy.

True. Though in the finale it was revealed as a controlling entity that wasn't exactly good.

Bring back the Sarlacc. This time with a AI brain. And….legs.

    That would actually be terrifying.

Isn't a Rathtar literally supposed to be a Sarlacc that became mobile?

They should portray the Sith as the protagonists and the Jedi as antagonists, with all their supposed virtues in the High Republic Era, and the Sith as smart, cunning, determined and disciplined. Virtues of a different character. What is the Sith’s role in the Will of the Force? Explore it. Oh, and no surprise, but the story of Plagueis and Sidious would seem to be the obvious choices. What the heck is so hard about this for the good people at DisneyLucasfilm?

Instead of a Sith/Sith wannabe how about a ‘light side’ villain who is either
    1. overzealous and micromanaging, or
    2. too detached and/or distant from the concerns of ordinary people?
