I think the movies will always have the force one way or another. As Bob Iger said, movies are for mass apeal and the shows can be experimental in their stuff like Andor. We would never get Andor type movie with no force involved.

I didn’t say it needs to be all Tony Gilroy all the time. I was just talking about quality levels. The showrunners and writers of Skeleton Crew also did a great job writing a show that’s tonally very different than Andor. And I just don’t see Levy as meeting some basic quality standards along those lines, that’s all. I’m not asking only super-mature political thrillers. Just for some standards.

That said, I hope my fears are unfounded and he churns out his best work yet.

We definitely don't want Star Wars Deadpool, do we?

It would probably rake the money in, but I'm not sure I want that style in SW.

Shawn Levy is a journeyman, "point and shoot" director. There's no style to his films really. And no, that's not necessarily a criticism. Technically good at what he does and is professional. That's why studio's love filmmakers like him. If Starfighter ends up being a good film and a worthy member of the SW family, then that's great. I'm just not expecting anything "much". Deadpool 3 was a good film, but it honestly looks like it could have been directed by Bret Ratner.

Same here, and I want space action. I mean the movie is called "Starfighter".

Yeah, I never understood what some fans don’t understand about the appeal of side characters. They give color to a story, and they are intriguing due to their small yet memorable parts. It’s pretty easy to understand.
Agreed. Except that I see this as a clear criticism.

Chirrut used the Force to sense Andor’s intention to kill Jyn’s father. He may not have had Jedi potential but he could use it in his own way.

I think it's unfair to say Levy lacks any style, both of these scenes in Deadpool and Wolverine are goddamn aces

I would not say at all that's a director without any talent, style or flair

Star Wars fans often claim that they want auteur directors to work on the franchise, but if you look at the polarised reactions to TLJ and The Acolyte, (I’d argue that both Rian Johnson and Leslye Headland could be considered auterish in that they have fairly distinct authorial voices), it’s pretty obvious why Lucasfilm would want to hire a ‘no frills’ director like Levy (or Favreau).
Those guys will make a fun, unchallenging crowdpleaser that won’t leave half the fan base apoplectic with rage over *insert thing that ruined Star Wars here*. So people can say they want an interesting, not Shawn Levy director to make the next movie all they want, but I’m sure I really believe them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am doubtful that this will make its way to the big screen. I'll believe it when I see it.

I mean, considering they said it starts shooting this fall, the odds realistically lean closer to it actually happening than it not.

    By a lot actually.

Once you’re talking about production start within the year, the train is in full motion and you’re booking and setting your production staff. They’re already spending a good amount of money on this as we speak.

It’s so annoying that this has become the default reaction for so many. We get it. They’ve cancelled a lot of projects. But Celebration is a time to get excited for the franchise we all at least claim to enjoy. If you can’t even enjoy this time then why are you even here? I just don’t get being cynical to the point where you won’t allow yourself to be excited.

This movie is definitely happening, if for no other reason, just because Ryan Gosling is in it and was also present at the Celebration.

Most people don't realize that however big SW is, modern Hollywood super stars are bigger than it. You won't convince a casual movie goer to go see a Star Wars movie just because it's Star Wars, unless there are hooks. Ryan Gosling is a major hook for casual movie goers. I already know at least 5 female friends that will go to that movie even though they don't really like Star Wars. And a couple of male friends honestly.

Not only is the movie happening, but it will make a lot of money, I'm sure of it.

Ryan gosling is the only thing keeping this movie in existence

it’s far more likely that the Rey movie just disappears forever as gosling becomes the face of the post-TROS era

either they both happen or the gosling movie happens

We shouldn't exagerate. In itself, star movies are losing power to bring people to theaters (popular IP tends to be a bigger attractive).

Also, although Ryan Gosling is a popular actor, he isn't a big draw for theaters un itself. Ryan Gosling had a movie (The Fall Guy) in 2024 that was far from a success.

I think the studio expects a charismatic actor as Ryan Gosling could endear people to the character (and the Star Wars brand), but not really star power.

Nah, that isn't the case at all anymore. Actors aren't a draw for the general audience, and they haven't been for a long time. Stars carrying a movie all on the own doesn't really happen anymore, and if it does, it is a very rare occurance. What mostly carries movies these day is, as mentioned above, a well known intellectual property. And even that only works if the movie "feels" right and has good marketing.

People don't rush out to see Ryan Gosling. Outside of Barbie, none of his movies have been big hits.

He's a great actor though. That's what really matters in regard to him being involved with Star Wars.

No, it sure as heck isn't. If the movie actually hinged on Ryan Gosling being involved, it wouldn't exist at all.

I will echo some of the sentiments here that Shawn Levy is a bit of a "jobber". He doesn't bring much style or directorial flair to his work, but he's proven to be able to actually deliver a damn movie on time. Because of this, I don't think this will be like the multitude of non-starters over the past decade. My focus is much more on the writer, Jonathan Tropper. His writing is a bit eclectic with nothing astounding or anything disastrous standing out to me. He wrote Levy's The Adam Project, which was a perfectly fine film. Overall, I have some faith that this will actually come out in it's Summer 2027 slot and that it'll be a fun time.

In Legends, Luke taught several Force-sensitives older than him (or about his age).

Although I agree it's very unlikely.
