Pretty sweet to see they had to add showings tonight at my local AMC due to demand. My 9 PM showing is about 80% full as of this morning.

I haven’t been this pumped to see a re-release in quite a long time.

For trailers before the movie, it should just be for movies that came out that summer i.e. War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four, Stealth, etc

This is where the fun begins! The ROTS re-release is here, and it seems poised to do boffo business!

According to Variety, "based on advanced ticket sales, the space opera sequel is expected to generate a sizable $20 million to $22 million over the weekend."

With limited screens available to it, it may take 2nd place at the box office behind "Sinners" and ahead of the new release "The Accountant 2," and holdover "Minecraft."

This $20 - $22 million range is up from a $17 million prediction for ROTS a week ago by EmpireCityBox Office.

This gross is expected to absolutely dwarf every other re-release this decade, including Avatar at $10 million, TPM at $8.5 million, Titanic at $7 million, and LOTR 3's 2 re-releases at $1.8 million and $1.2 million. It shows that prequel nostalgia is a real thing!

After reading the earlier $17 million box office prediction, I got curious, and as I occasionally do, I lurked the box office theory forums, where posters really get into the weeds, analyzing a film's number of screens, formats (like Imax, Dbox, etc), show times, etc. They actually have some posters who go to theater websites, count the number of seats sold and the rate they're selling, and then compare those figures to figures for other films to make predictions about an upcoming film's box office. They're really hard core about it.

Anyway, the consensus there is that ROTS could've done even better business, perhaps up to $10 million more, but it's number of screens, premium formats, and best show times are limited because they're blocked by a crowded release schedule, since Minecraft, Sinners, and The Accountant 2 are guaranteed by contract certain times and formats even if they can't fill theaters, and that seems to be the case. Most ROTS weekend screenings are totally booked, but theaters can't expand more for it because half-filled theaters are guaranteed to The Accountant 2 and other films.

In other words, ROTS could've gotten an even higher weekend box office haul if it were re-released on a different date with less competition. Other factors have also cut into its potential. The re-release received virtually no promotion from Disney. It's also only being re-released for a week, even though it's clear that it would bring in good money during its second weekend, but it's unlikely that Disney will extend it's re-release further because that would cut into the screens available to its film Thunderbolts, which comes out next weekend. It seems Disney underestimated Anakin's power!

I'm halfway joking, but I honestly think that Disney didn't expect there'd be this much fan interest, and they'll clearly be leaving some money on the table.

Well, at least, all of this untapped box office potential will guarantee a 25th anniversary re-release, and maybe we'll get to see the version that's been converted to 3D that time around.

ROTS has been one of the Star Wars films most special to me. So, I'm glad to see that GL's final film is still getting a lot of love from other fans too!

Thanks @Darth Nerdling ! That is some really empowering news! It's great to be part of something that's turning out to be an unexpected win for SW fans. And indeed it proves the PT nostalgia is strong!

Disney has put no advertising in for any of the re releases so it’s not like ROTS is really missing out

that’s kinda the whole point of a re-release just put in zero money get a couple million dollars. Plus the Star Wars fans do all the advertising for them

    Yesterday
I didn't see RotS at the cinema, I had a crush on a popular boy at the time and didn't want him to think of me as a "nerd" so I waited for it to come on TV. I didn't appreciate it much first time round, but last year I really got back into the Prequel Trilogy and now I love it [face_love] I understand it a lot better now that I'm older and more mature minded (I've gone through some tough stuff over the past decade) and I don't care about labels; my boyfriend loves me for who I am.

On Sunday, I'm finally seeing RotS at the cinema for the 20th anniversary screening [face_party]I'm seeing it with a friend. I'm feeling excited :D and nervous [face_nail_biting]Anakin Skywalker is my favourite SW character :anakin: and I can really relate to his story. I'm going to wear my Moods of Darth Vader t-shirt, japoor snippet necklace, and Colourpop Darth Vader eyeshadow palette :vader:

Should I bring my Anakin Skywalker lightsaber? :bluesaber:

Just got outta the theater. Theater here was like 30% full. I teared up a couple times. John Williams music really hammers home. His score takes everything to another level.

    a few thoughts I had watching tonight…
When Palpatine tells Anakin that the Jedi are planning to kill the Senators. Reminded me of that old saying
“Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

obviously Palps is a liar, but that one is an absolute whopper.

Hayden’s facial acting is so good in this film. Obviously everyone knows that, But it impresses me every time.

Also the old critique that Anakin falls too fast to the dark side, I see the critique , but I really don’t agree with it.

Anakin is in a fragile mental state. The war has traumatized him. Palps is playing on his fears. He is under a lot of stress. He makes a few horrendous decisions, and then he’s at a point where it seems too late to turn back. I find his fall to be quite believable.

The theme of fearing to lose those you love, and the warning against obsessing over it, is one that hits me more than ever as I grow older. GL was really cooking with that in this film.

obviously the Political themes hit hard during the Bush era, but it hits even harder now with Trump. This movie and its themes and warnings are more important than ever nowadays.

GL really swung for the fences with ROTS, and the ball is still flying 20 years later. =D=

I noticed a few things I had never noticed on ROTS before. Also the CGI aged poorer on a theater screen than a smaller one. Not bad mind you and still mighty impressive for 2005. It was mostly on some of the battle droids

I remember Dark Side / Light Side Game tokens from Burger King. I also remember attempting to see the movie on opening Day but the theatre was so crowded that my uncle and I couldn't get in. I remember a guy dressed up and with his face painted like Darth Maul there at the theatre in Michigan. I ended up seeing the movie twice in 2005. Once with my uncle after opening Day and once with my Dad. My dad didn't like it that much, and later Dad watched half of the 2008 CGI Clone Wars Series and the beginning of Rebels with me and a cousin watched Revenge of the Sith on DVD with me, and my other uncle took me to see TFA, and another cousin took me to see Rogue One, and I never went to the theatre to see Solo or TCW Movie or Episodes IX-VIII. I went to see TPM 5 times in 1999, once with my brother in a coastal state of the USA. I saw Attack of the Clones once with Dad and once with my Grandma and first girlfriend in theatres. I remember owning the VHS of Attack of the Clones and once I watched it twice in a row in one sitting. Now I own most of the Movies and shows on DVD or Blue Ray, and 4K Ultra, but my Blue Ray player can't play those ones until I upgrade my DVD player, if I do. Anyway, I have Disney +. Tonight my Pastor friend took me out to see Revenge of the Sith in Theatres. It was my third time seeing it in theatres. It was spectacular! The graphics really stood out to me more than ordinary viewings on TV or on a computer. My Pastor friend liked it. There is a lot of nuance, both storytelling wise and character arc wise and visually wise in the film.
