They do have the advantage though that Mendelsohn seemed to be aged a bit in the main Rogue One timeline, the opening section with the young Jyn he's more "natural". I'd guess its easier to age with makeup than it is to make someone look younger and they probably wanted Krennic a bit older as well so he could see more a rival to Tarkin, someone who had been climbing the ladder for many years. End result is he actually looks around the age Krennic should be in 4-5 years pre Yavin.

I'v not followed the extra material but I notice he has his Rogue One rank as well for this which puts him pretty high up the pecking order although I spose you could argue the nature of the ISB does mean there power potentially outstrips their nominal ranks.

It will be interesting to see what his involvement with Meero is, we do definately get some pointers in season 1 than Meero is a bit of a careerist, at least compared to Karn's idealism but she hasnt been shown to be AS cynical as Krennic who probably has a pretty good idea of the direction the Empire is going being in the know about the DS construction. Indeed I actually wonder whether that might be were Meero gets involved with him? she's been shown to be very good at chasing up leads around equipment and perhaps picks up on resources used for the DS being hidden.

    @moreorless12

I wondered whether the older looking Medelsohn image was from towards the end of filming. There are shots where he looks younger and match up with his appearance in RO, may be they were done at the beginning of the shoot? His different hairstyles really adding to the contrast between those images.

True the filming did cover quite a bit of time with the reshoots although I don't think quite enough to cover the difference. I admit I'm guessing a bit here but to be it looked like they aged Mendelsohn a bit for the main Rogue One timeline, he looks quite a bit younger at the premier to me, more like the scenes at the start of the film.

Again isnt aging always an easier job than de aging for makeup? he's onscreen much more aged but its still a fairly long scene at the start. Krennic's canon age as well was older than Mendelsohn when Rogue One was shot as well by a few years at 50-51.

Orson, coincidentally, is the name of a character from Mork & Mindy, hailing from a planet where people are born old-looking, and appear younger as they age.

He was one of the best characters in Rogue One for sure. Mendelsohn really nailed the haughty imperial attitude right from the first scene. So much aura compared to Hux and Pryde in the ST movies

There's also famous film director Orson Welles.

Meanwhile, "Krennic" probably comes from famous German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach, whose first name is reminiscent of another famous film director. ;)

From Mork's home planet of Ork. If I'm not mistaken, he's the one who reverses Mork's aging process so he can marry Mindy.

Really liked Krennic's first appearance in season 2, he is a competent boss, while also has great hilarious moments.

They've added a new layer to Krennic, he really is a sneaky manipulating *******. But he's still no match for Tarkin.

I think that is part of the overarching setup for him. If viewed in order, we meet Partagaz, who seems like the idealized Imperial figure but then he gets shown as outmaneuvered by the arrival of Krennic, who then gets schooled severely by Tarkin. It's a great method of laying out the ladder within Imperial ranks while also just exploring individual characters.

Krennic's apparent coziness with the Emperor around this time adds a new layer to his desperation to get an audience with him in RO. He's no longer trying to move up in the world, but rather seeking to regain lost favor. Will something happen in the Ghorman project to cause that fall from favor? Or is that just Palpatine being a capricious manipulator?

There is a part of me that thinks he could also be lying about personal audiences with the Emperor just to pass himself off as more important than he actually is. It would be well within the characterization to "meet" him in this show and hear all about how connected and important he is... from his own mouth... only to get to Rogue One and see how he cannot get a meeting with the boss and his coworkers take credit for what actual accomplishments he has.

I think Krennic might have had short meetings with the Emperor early on to talk about this Energy power. And now he is lucky to get Emperor on the Holo with him to talk. For now the Death Star is his project. And thats what the Emperor wants most.

Krennic could talk with the Emperor if its about the Death Star so the spider silk is tied into that somehow. anyway the Krennic banner is the best

The Ghorman kalkite is needed to cost the reactor lenses for the Death Star. The spider silk is of no practical consequence to the project.

Except that the Emperor will have to start getting the silk for his robes from other planets with inferior silkspiders.

I like how it's more like "He's competent enough at the specific job he has with the overpowered resources and atmosphere of dread the Empire has" rather than necessarily transferable competency that could be used in other assignments or responsibilities.

He's a lethally effective combination of robber baron, political administrator, construction boss, and security chief for the express purposes of building the Death Star, and he's developed some personal eccentricities and "administrative tics" because of that - not necessarily useful ones, mind you, since there's likely not much benefit to making a clandestine political meeting a dramatic production for his own entertainment, but then again, there's not much reason for him to wear an ostentatious cape all the time either.

And I think its that contrast between the image he has for himself and projects to others - as a great military man and "star" of his own life - and the reality of what he is - the ultimate middle manager, but a middle manager nonetheless - that makes the great humor in his Andor scenes.

He's a pompous, loud, dramatic man trolling his own subordinates and entertaining himself with their unamused reaction to the propagandists' cringe confidence, and he wouldn't be able to do it with quite the confidence he has if he wasn't making the Galaxy's biggest gun for much, much scarier people than himself.

I can buy and actually like the thought of Krennic being the Emperor's favorite executive during this time period only for him to eventually lose favor amongst Tarkin's rise by Rogue One. That kind of turnover feels like it reflects the cutthroat turnstile nature of a fascist regime.
