nuBSG wasn't grimdark. Yes, it dealt with very serious societal and personal issues, and got very dark at times. But it also had a lot of genuine, interpersonal humor. Most of the characters had a lot of personality. It wasn't po-faced.

And I don't think they should take a cue from SG. nuBSG is one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time. They should build from that.

For fun adventure, you have SG1 and loads of other genre TV shows and movie franchises (not to mention the excellent Star Trek Strange New Worlds, which is a great balance of serious and fun). But BSG doesn't need to add to that pile. It should lean into the realism of its most successful iteration.

The BSG miniseries is a sci fi masterpiece. The effects still hold up because they knew their limitations, and the drama is first rate.

It did get a bit soapy but yeah if it was on something I had right now I’d be rewatching it for sure.

Haven’t seen any of what he’s done either. Here’s to hoping he pulls it off.

Though I can’t help but wish they’d just get Moore to do another story set in that universe. He’s done a great job with For All Mankind. Though if the latter gets a 5th season, he’ll obviously be busy. And I’d rather he focus on concluding that one well.

That's exactly how I've always thought the 3rd iteration of this franchise should go ever since they first announced it a decade+ ago. It should have a different feel and tone than either previous version- with an SG-1-like show falling in-between the two extreme examples of what Classic and Nu BSG represent.

Mainly because if you try to go even darker than NuBSG, you're just going to end up looking like you're only trying to out-grim it for the sake of out-grimming it and being edgy. Rather it just be its own thing free of those comparisons.

    True.

Also true: The show's most hopeful moment was the arrival of the Rape Ship. ;)

    What's BSG doing on Friday?
It was certainly dark, but there were moments of levity (and hope) throughout the whole show. It's not some Snyder-esque grimfest for the sake of being a grimfest.

I loved the first 3 seasons of the new BSG, hated the last few.

Never finished it. One too many times, it was like “plot twist: the Cylons were behind it all along.” [face_plain]

    “And they have a plan”

As the series went on it became really painfully clear that the writers didn’t have a plan.

Personally, I think Battlestar should have earned him another crack at Star Trek.

The main problem with BSG is all the terrible ancillary and spinoff material, like Caprica and Blood& Chrome. It pretty much destroyed the brand.

Yup. Half of the main crew ended up being Cylon sleeper agents, which was absurd. I could see one or two, but they were just doing it for shock value.

Blood and Chrome was pretty good and much better than The Plan which should have been three different movies. The issue with Caprica was that it turned out that the kid we thought was William Adama actually wasn't.

I did like BSG but must admit by the end I couldn't remember who wasn't a Cylon!

Somebody put a lot of effort into new VFX for this classic scene.
