Well this looks like it’s gonna be a boring award show season. Globes and Oscars. I’m rooting for Black Panther. The biggest shock for me, is how Mission Impossible wasn’t nominated for best score, yet A Quiet Place was. I thought Mission Impossible was gonna win that category. It had better get one in the Oscars.
Yeah, I was also kind of annoyed at the nom for A Quiet Place. I found the score to be the weakest thing about that movie. It wasn't exactly terrible, but the film was most effective when the score wasn't around and because the film is so focused on the diegetic sound of the environment, I often found the music very intrusive. It didn't ruin the movie or anything, but the movie would have been better if it had maybe half the amount of score that it does.
I'd totally forgotten that The Americans had another set of awards it was eligible for. Really hope it wins. Pulling for Black Panther and probably Mary Poppins, if the early reviews of that are accurate.
I was satisfied with at least the last award given out; but the overall show was just boring as ever. Samberg and Oh were dreadful. They just tried too hard. To this day I could never understand the need for a 15 minute monologue on an awards show where they feel inclined to cut off the acceptance speeches at a certain point of the winners. And then there's the commercials. They give two, at most three awards at a time, then another block of commercials? One of these days it'll dawn on me to simply DVR the entire show and watch it another day (avoiding spoilers). Would probably cut the viewing time to about an hour and a half.
I loved that he thanked Satan. Is that the first time someone did that? It was awesome. Yeah, I paused the show at some point when it first started and my wife and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. When we got back it was nice to fast forward through some of it. I agree it was mostly lackluster and Samberg and Oh weren't that great, but I wasn't expecting them to be. Samberg's "roasting" of the other guests but actually complimenting them is a bit he did at the Franco Roast. It was nice to see it brought back, but it could have been done better. I went to bed after The Dude's speech. He eventually got his point across but rambled on a little too much. I wish these idiot actors would write stuff down. "Oh I'm going to forget who to thank." Not if you do some prep work you conceited *****. Oh well. Glad Rami Malek won.
Ricky Gervais alluded to the bribery more than once when he was MC of the show as a joke but of course in all comedy there is truth.
I did like that Sandra Oh's father gave her daughter a standing-oh-vation when she won her Golden Globe. It was very cute and almost brought her to tears again. During Carol Burnett acceptance speech of the new Carol Burnett award, they cut to Dick Van Dyke, with his mouth agape and appearing to be staring at the camera. It was super eerie and odd. I love the random cuts to other people that don't know they're on camera. They look so bored or they're not smiling when everyone else is smiling. If it mattered, I'm sure you'd hear more about it, but you don't hear stories or at least I don't: "Denzel Washington frowns during Whatsherface's entire speech".
didn't see much if it, I was off rewatching Spider-Verse while it won a golden globe - that's the only Golden Globe winner I hope translates to Oscar gold cuz it deserves it. the best drama / best musical or comedy winners were weird. Also was Bryan Singer even invited or appeared at the Golden Globes, yah he got fired but the movie was really almost entirely shot before he got kicked off it. And it won!
