2025 State of the Fanfic Address! Welcome! Ladies, gentlemen, boys, girls, and others, we welcome you to the 2025 State of the Fanfic Address! Here we will discuss the overall state of our fantastic forum and share the latest on upcoming events and challenges for the year 2025. Overall State of Fanfic Awesome as always, but are you surprised? After finishing 2024 with a December Review Race and Ultimate Drabble Challenge XI, both hosted by my amazing mod colleague @Mira_Jade, we are once again kicking off the year with our fourth annual Kessel Run Challenge, hosted by the excellent @ViariSkywalker. This intensive writing experience, like no other on our boards, began early in January and will run through March. Our recurring challenge and resource threads—Angstmongers Anonymous, the Dear Diary Challenge, the Mini-Games Challenges, Monday Mush Mania (MMM), the OTP Thread, the OC Revolution, and the Fanon Thread—continue going strong, and we would like to take a moment to thank the non-mods who so awesomely give of their time and energy to host those threads: @Raissa Baiard on MMM, @ViariSkywalker on Angstmongers, and @Kahara and @Pandora on Dear Diary. (If I’m forgetting anyone, please let me know!) We’ve got challenges for reading as well as writing, too! If you’ve been wanting to read and review more, we invite you to join the 2025 Reading Challenge. Anyone can join at any time of the year, and you can win colors for the number of stories you review and list by the end of the year! Finally, we’d like to invite you, our members, to give yourselves a round of applause, as you are ultimately the ones who make this place as awesome as it is! Challenge-Related Reminders The Mini-Games Challenge thread is still open for new challenges! Anyone is welcome to submit a mini-challenge to this thread at any time (so long as they abide by the TOS). Similarly, anyone is welcome to take part in any of this thread’s challenges at any time, and there is no deadline for any of them. Concerning submitting challenges to the Mini-Games thread, we are pleased to announce a new rule, effective immediately: You no longer have to PM the mods each time you want to submit a challenge to that thread. However: You may only submit one (1) challenge to the thread per calendar month. (This is similar to the procedure in the Fanon Thread.) If you have a larger-scale challenge in mind than is suitable for Mini-Games, you are welcome to propose it to the mods! Please PM all three of us (devilinthedetails, Findswoman, Mira_Jade) with a proposal including the following: (a) theme/subject of the challenge, (b) timeframe of the challenge (including whether or not there will be a deadline), and (c) a sample OP. We’ll then discuss your proposal and get back to you with comments, posting dates, and all that! Call for Volunteers: 2024–25 Fanfic Festival of Favorites Once again, we are in search of three to four volunteers to host the 2024–25 Fanfic Festival of Favorites (FoF; 2023–24 thread here), which will start late March–early April, directly after the end of the Kessel Run. Here’s what FoF volunteers do: Prep work: Drafting rules and announcement posts (which can usually be copied from previous years), establishing a schedule, discussing and implementing process and category changes. Hosting the festival: Announcing new categories weekly once the festival begins, collecting anonymous submissions using @The Golden Yoda sock. Indexing: Ensure all submissions are eligible, create an index thread to be stickied in Fanfic for the rest of 2025. If you are interested in volunteering, please apply to all three mods (devilinthedetails, Findswoman, Mira_Jade) via PM. We will put together a slate of volunteers based on these submissions and will PM you back letting you know if you have been selected to volunteer. We will also help the selected volunteers establish a group PM for festival planning purposes and will be there to help if any questions or difficulties come up. Upcoming Events in 2025 We have some absolutely awesome events we have planned in 2025! In March, look out for the opening of Spring Bingo, once again hosted by @Chyntuck, which will run through May 1. May will once again be WIP Month, hosted by yours truly, and in June through September we will welcome back the Fanfiction Summer Olympics, to be hosted by my excellent colleague @devilinthedetails, who will also be hosting Autumn Bingo beginning mid-September. And in August get ready for a special mod!challenge treat: Mods’ Time Trials will return! (Last done all the way back in 2019!) We’ll round out 2025 with some Fanfic year-end classics: the November Word Race (hosted by Mira), the December Review Race (also hosted by Mira), and the Non-Denominational Winter (for Some) Holiday Fic-Gift Exchange (hosted by yours truly). I've been eyeing this one ever since I came back to the boards and am super excited to see it make a return!
Thanks to the mods for the nonstop fun new and recurring challenges and their being on top of stuff on the forums, when you know they have RL things going on too. And to the authors who provide such awesome nummies! The AUs they write feel like the way it happened.
