*waits for some economist to come in with something about PPP*

Anyway I just paid $1.41/L. Considering the US and Aussie dollar are almost at parity now (LOL) that makes it about $5.20 a gallon.

Ah, but you'd have to take shipping costs into account for the arbitrage to work.

I wish I could use public transportation more often but, sadly, it's a joke here in Seattle. And it doesn't help that funding for things like buses have been cut due to ill-conceived tax initiatives that are passed statewide. I only work 12 miles from home, but it would take 3 bus transfers at an hour and 45 minutes, each way. Thankfully, I telecommute on Mondays and am now carpooling 2-3 times a week.

And does it really matter who's currently paying what for gas? If your prices went up by almost 30% in less than a month, you'd be whining, too. :p

I'm not defending Bush by any means, but when do you think the last time he paid for his own gas? Hell, when was the last time he was even at a gas station?

At $4/gallon, the price of gas will still be way too low. Gas needs to go to $6 or $7 a gallon to really get Americans to start conserving it. Either a major recession will kill U.S. gas consumption, or high gas prices will spark a major recession, thus killing U.S. gas consumption. Right now, both seem to be happening at the same time. Stagflation deluxe.

    1) The price will not (remember you heard it here first) reach 4 bucks a gallon

    2) The president would not hear of this "news" because it isn't news. It's speculative. And not the first time it's been said to reach 4 bucks "in the near term."

    It never has.

[face_dancing] I only need to fill my tank once a month. [face_dancing]

What I love is that they wouldn't think twice about the $500 car note plus $250 car insurance (not sure about other states, but here in Louisiana, full coverage is mandatory for financed vehicles) required to drive it.

But lord, when they have to spend $80+ to fuel up their behemoth....suddenly it becomes "too much".

    Dubya-Tee-Aitch right there.

But $4 gas means demand is high, which means the economy is strong! 1! 1! +1!

I saw CNBC before I came to work this afternoon, and they were talking about that Bush news conference. One anchor asked if Bush were living in some protective bubble, in his own little world.

From now on he shall be known a President BubbleBoy :p

Sorry to break this to you... in California, it already has reached $4 a gallon.

Apparently word hasn?t gotten to Mr. Bush?s White House that in California, $4-a-gallon gas is already here.

And the average gas price refers to regular, nationwide. But even in California, regular is not even near 4 dollars a gallon.

    Then again, who uses regular?

Also worth pointing out is that gasoline is more expensive in California because taxes and environmental standards requiring cleaner fuel

Bush's acknowledged unfamiliarity with the recent cost of gasoline produced some fumes at the pump.

At a Shell service station in the Bay Area city of San Mateo, the price of a gallon of regular had already reached $4.29, well above the state average of $3.42, as measured by the AAA auto club.

Although not as whacky, it's actually more accurate to blame the speculator who, in a lull, decided to make a name for himself by putting a BUY at $100/barrel on the bare minimum of 1000 barrels earlier this year. :)

So, Tina, are you outraged that President isn't aware that Americans might not be getting spoilt silly on ridiculously cheap petrol anymore? :( Is it an owwy in your outraged little heart? Awww, the modern world had to come knocking at some point! But don't worry, you can ensure that you **** the planet up not just by driving too often with your cheap "gas" but by turning all your agricultural land into ethanol producing land, thus driving food prices up too.

    God bless America! [face_flag]

Well farmers aren't producing grain anymore because ethanol pays more. yet demand for grain is up, due to increased consumption of meat globally (lead by China). So arguably, the American love of driving is going to completely prison **** the planet no matter what, and really, you guys having to pay $4/gallon is low on the list of ZOMG CONCERNS IMO.

    YMMV, of course

Well actually, all things being equal, supply and demand will affect price. So yeah, it could be that much, and should be, if people will pay it.

This is where we shake our fists at people who hold back alternative fuel sources. Yes, Jello, you.
