I could tell that he had come for a purpose, but first I asked him if he wanted to see Luke. Something warm and surprised came into his eyes at that point and I thought how handsome and sweet he looked in that moment. Owen teases me often that I am a matchmaker at heart, and I wondered if there had ever been a woman in his life.

    If only she knew...

He honors Anakin, not what Anakin became.

    As he should.

I noticed that his hand shook when he reached down and touched Luke?s head. There might have been tears in his eyes too, but when he turned to look at me again, his expression was as serene as always.

:( Poor Obi-Wan, that would be such a terrible thing to live with, yet he gets through it admirably.

    Wonderful update! =D= =D=

    Luke?s father is not dead

What a bomb to drop! Though it does explain Obi-Wa...oops, I mean Ben's demeanor.

It must have been quite a shock for him to discover Anakin still lived and what he's become as well.

I'm impressed he was willing to tell Beru.

I loved his gentleness with little Luke. I can just picture him being moved to tears as he gazed down at him [face_love] [face_love] [face_love]

    Great update

Today Owen had to go out to the vaporators on the farthest edges of our property. I am used to being alone, though now of course, I am never truly alone. Luke is here, and even when he?s sleeping, I am very aware of him.

He murmurs in his sleep at times, a slight smile playing about his little mouth. He is a happy child and has brought so much joy to our lives. So even while he sleeps, I peek in on him and it brings a smile to my face to watch him. How bad can the galaxy be when there is Luke in our home?

    Awww!!![face_love] I LOVED this part!! [face_love]

The part with Obi-Wan was simply stunning, heartbreaking and as always, real. @};- Beautiful, beautiful work! [:D]

Anyway, Luke was asleep, and I offered to wake him (after all, Obi-Wan had come a long way to bring Luke to us) but Obi-Wan said no, that he was happy just to look at him.

    And he did.

I noticed that his hand shook when he reached down and touched Luke?s head. There might have been tears in his eyes too, but when he turned to look at me again, his expression was as serene as always.

Wow, great characterization here with Beru-- she's quite a woman!

The thing that really got me about this last post was how he looked even worse than when he'd shown up with Luke-- and then you perfectly describe a broken man that is hard to *imagine* seeming worse. Except that you can understand why when he drops the bomb that Vader still lives out there, despite personally chopping the guy up and leaving him in a lava oven to roast to death... yeesh. I can only imagine him not being sure which he prefers at this point, a live Vader who may or may not be able to be turned back to the light but who's wreaking havoc in the meantime, or a dead one.

Wow, that was so realistic. Especially when Obi-Wan touched Luke's head. It just seemed like...Well, Obi-Wan he's in a really bad spot right now. He's got all these terrible, confused thoughts. He's just found out that Anakin, Luke's father, and a Sith, is still alive. But then he touches Luke, an absolute innocent, and Obi-Wan realizes....maybe, just maybe it was all worth it. For Luke. For Luke's sake, it was worth it. It all had to happen.

I don't know if that made sense or not...

    Amazing update. =D=

earlybird-obi-wan And how conflicted must that make him?

LilyHobbitJedi Obi-Wan is the rock upon which the future Jedi Order is built. :_|

KELIA I think he probably thought they were owed the truth. Sad as it was. :(

    dancing_star Thank you so much!

    Jade_Pilot I love writing Beru. [face_love]

    ginchy Thank you! [:D]

Gina Glad you like it! ;)

    Tatooine_Ghost Will do and thanks!

ShrunkenJedi Yeah, which one would be worse? [face_thinking] I just don't know. :_|

Meredith_Kenobi Exactly. Luke gives him a reason to survive.

    [b]Entry #9[/b]

It took him a while to tell me the story. He paced as he talked, his hands tucked into the big sleeves of his cloak. He told me that, on that last terrible day, he and Anakin had fought. It was going to be a duel to the death, and Obi-Wan had gone into knowing that if he did not prevail, he would die.

Instead, it had been Anakin who lost.

Ben confessed that he had left Anakin to die, unable at the last moment to strike the deathblow. He did not say what the circumstances were, only that he had had every reason to believe that Anakin was certainly dying, and would be dead within moments.

After that, he had wanted only to get Padmé to safety so that she could give birth to her son. Luke had been born and Padmé had died shortly after. She died of grief he said, and I could hear his sorrow over that. And his guilt. Though what he has to feel guilt over I don?t understand.

I think he is just that type of man, one who shoulders burdens that aren?t his, simply because he know no other way to be. Owen is like that in some ways, and maybe that?s why those two are always at odds.

Anyway, Padmé died and Obi-Wan brought Luke to us to raise and love as our own. He left Anakin [i]dying[/i], but not dead. Even now, I can see that he beats himself up over his weakness, his failure to give Anakin that final mercy of death. Now Anakin is alive. But he?s not Anakin anymore. He?s much more dangerous.

As a precaution, mostly against the Emperor?s interest, Obi-Wan told me that the Luke?s birth had been covered up and there was no reason to think that the Empire would ever know that Luke existed.

We both know that Luke would be in danger if the Emperor ever discovered that Padmé had lived long enough to give birth to Anakin?s child. As Obi-Wan explained, Palpatine would have wanted Anakin?s son for his own, to train and twist for his own evil purposes. Anakin?s legacy would give Luke great potential. And it was from this terrible fate that Obi-Wan wanted to save Luke.

    So Luke came to us.

Now, however, Obi-Wan has discovered that Anakin did not die, but had been rescued somehow and taken to the Emperor. Palpatine has put Anakin into some sort of life-sustaining armor as far as Obi-Wan can tell. Whatever injuries he received in that duel with Obi-Wan should have killed him, but somehow, he is alive. And Obi-Wan has to live with that.

Ben. I must remember to call him Ben.

Ben is not the only one who is going by a new name. Luke?s father, the man we knew as Anakin, is now called something else altogether.

    He is now Darth Vader.

May the goddess forgive me, but I can only be grateful for his betrayal. Luke?s name will not draw less attention. Perhaps it was foolish and risky to call him Skywalker, and I know that many think we did so because of his father. A son has the right to carry his dead father?s name, and that?s what everyone thinks we did.

    But they?re wrong.

We call him Skywalker to honor [i]Shmi[/i], a way to form a bond between her and the grandson she will never know. It is a name of honor, something that Anakin has tried to destroy.

Luke will redeem the name, I think. And Shmi would be proud to know that her name lives on in him.

Beautiful update. I like Beru's take on this, how she wonders why Obi-wan should feel guilty. Her thinking about the similarities between Obi-wan and Owen about taking things on their shoulders and them being at odds because of those similarities is spot on.

Thanks for the PM. I can't wait for more. =D=

Nice update! :) You are bringing Beru to life so well. I especially liked her insights about Ben and Owen:

"I think he is just that type of man, one who shoulders burdens that aren?t his, simply because he know no other way to be. Owen is like that in some ways, and maybe that?s why those two are always at odds."

Obi-Wan must have felt better to have been able to tell someone of his misery and guilt, as hard as it was.

Luke will redeem the name, I think. And Shmi would be proud to know that her name lives on in him.

    She sure would! :D

What a horrible moment that must have been for him when he learned Anakin not only survived but is now Vader.

How wonderful Beru believed Luke would be able to redeem the name.
