It's seems so primitive. The starships and sets look excellent, but it all feels so old and dated.

The overall picture quality will improve considerably on DVD (Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike have tidbits of the OT in DVD quality, and they look great).

What is the general purpose of A New Hope?

What was Vader's role in the film?

Both games have some scenes in the background of the main menu. There's no sound, but the picture quality is excellent. The two arcade-style flight games are for Gamecube.

Digital technology will clean these films up. I don't want any future changes to the OT except for updated lightsabers.

Besides, we can "justify" the dull look because the galaxy is in a state of civil war. Look at wartorn cities/nations...everything is so drab and dismal in appearance.

    Sure have.

I have major beef with some reviewers and fans, though.

It pisses me off to no end when they say crap like, "it was a classic '70s campfest," or, "a galaxy trapped in the '70s."

Hell, no one considers Gone With the Wind a relic of the '30s.

When they re-released ANH in 1997 it drew well and was extremely popular with the viewing audience. Would a '70s campfest be that over twenty years after it's debut? Hell no! Star Wars is timeless!

Special editions, original editions, digital effects, bad acting, directing, etc. It doesn't matter! It's all Star Wars! And that is good.

That said, I can't wait until September when I can see ANH in beatiful digital splender.

Oh, and as you may have noticed I hate the 70s. 50s and 60s all the way baby!

yes. a new hope, or "Star Wars" as normal people call it, is very old. for proof, simply observe the copyright date on the back of the cover.

the purpose of "star wars" is to introduce people to a galaxy far far away, and orientate you on the epic struggle for freedom. Vaders role is the emporers viceroy, who attempts to carry out his evil plot to abolish the last strands of resistance.

as much as I love ANH, I do think it feels and looks a bit 70's
I mean, 'cause ESB is only 3 years after but it looks like a decade or mater later, same with ROTJ
but still, it's outstanding for the year it was made, and could look a lot worse than it does

I like how everything looks used and whatnot. It seems by ROTJ, the Alliance and Empire are using new ships!

    i like the look of the ANH. Sure, the PT's special effects are smooth and sleek, but I think the grimey, old look of ANH is perfect for the time period in which it is set. The rebellion didnt have the money to make "stylish" ships and vehicles, just like Lucas didnt have the technology.. i dont know, i guess it works in an odd kind of way 8-}

Well, the antiquated technology didn't do the lightsabers any favors. Especially Obi Wan's.

In some shots it looked like a metal rod with a bright light at the end.

    Well yes and no.
Some of the things haven't aged well (some of the computer panels and equipment look very 70's Star trekish). Some of the aliens look a little dated.
But some things are timeless. The X-wings, sets, characters, and costumes.
Actually, Luke's hair has become so set in my classical view of Luke that I don't associate it with 70's at all... heh...
    Same for Hans :)
But some of the rebel pilots...

lol when i saw that when i was a kid, i was scared because i thought vader had somehow turned off bens saber, leaving the poor old guy defenseless

the lightsabers are my main issue with ANH
I was really surprised that GL didn't fix their fx in the SE

it's one of the many reasons that ESB looks more advanced and current than ANH

Luke's saber went from blotchy pale blue that was almost white, to bright, thick, vibrant sharp blue in ESB

and his saber in ROTJ looks perfect, against dark or light, the fx were really well done on it
