@R1.5, I saw that first image and before I read a word I was flashing back to SERE school, the PoW camp and interrogation resistance training. I wouldn't be surprised if it badly triggered former prisoners. In that sense, it's certainly an effective piece of art.

The Guardian’s 1000 Artworks You Must See Before You Die



Door (1954 – 1956) – Joseph Beuys

In an effort to be extremely plain about exactly what artwork is being discussed, this work is sometimes titled “Burned Door, Beak & Ears of a Hare.” What I think is the official title and the title under which it is currently exhibited is quite a bit pithier, but no less literal: “Door.” Honestly, that’s kind of funny.

Like many artists of the 20th Century, Beuys played around in the realm of the ready-made sculpture and the assemblage, both art forms that involved taking pre-existing objects and recontextualizing them via displaying them with other objects or even just displaying them as they were. In this case, there was an explosion in a building that Beuys lived in that left the building partially burned. What’s a good modern artist to do but make off with this striking artifact? To the already somewhat menacing blackened door, Beuys added a heron skull and the ears of a dead hare. Prop it up against the wall at an exhibition, as he eventually did, and you’ve got a work of art.

Or, well, I guess I mean, “you’ve got a work of art?” Because, well, do you? I’m not entirely opposed to these kind of assemblages and I do find this one kind of striking. The burned and blackened door has a certain menacing quality to it and I think it’s pretty clear that Beuys is seeing it as a representation of death, given the skull (which is pretty cool) and the ears (which . . . aren’t really). Here’s a close-up where you can see those objects a bit better.



I’m not going to pretend to have this figured out. Is it great art? Well, it’s a kind of cool object. Those probably aren’t the same things though.

All right, while you can look at both Painroom and Door and speculate on how they might be informed by the legacy of the Holocaust, next time we’ll be looking at a piece that makes no bones about it. Next time, Beuys explicitly reckons with the legacy of the Holocaust and, interestingly, it’s the one of his so far that I overall don’t like that much.
