This painting depicts a scene from the work of the Roman poet Ovid, specifically the Rape of Lotis by Priapus. In the story, the beautiful Lotis falls asleep at a festival and Priapus attempts to sexually assault her as she sleeps. A braying ass awakens her just in time and Priapus is ridiculed by the rest of the gods. That’s Lotis in the lower right corner, sleeping with her breasts exposed, while Priapus, wearing a green sash, bends over her. On the right side of the painting, you’ll see the ass, but he seems to be checking out another ass at the moment, namely the one being cheekily presented to the viewer by a satyr. Seriously, that donkey’s expression might be my favorite thing in this painting.

Giovanni Bellini began this painting in 1514 and when he died in 1516, it was left partially incomplete. While scholars say that all of the figures were painted by Bellini, much of the landscape was probably painted by Titian several years later. In a detail I found interesting, the pheasant, perched on a branch on the upper right was probably added to the painting by Alfonso, Duke of Ferrara, who commissioned the painting from Bellini in the first place. That’s kind of cool, a patron getting to add his own little personal touch to a painting he commissioned.

I like this one okay. I think some of the figures come across as lively. Priapus’ expression is great and I love the woman right in the center of the painting, with her arm reaching to the man next to her while he puts his hand on her legs. And that landscape is really cool too. If you zoom way in, you’ll see a couple of deer (or maybe dogs) about midway up on the left, running up the hill.

Okay, next time, we’re going to jump into another side trip by looking at a kind of art that I had never even heard of before I discovered it on this list. That’s super-exciting and hopefully this one will be awesome as the African Masks section.

The order of the Saint's Fingers is said to be the living embodiment of the will and fury of a saint who was cast to the bottom of the ocean long ago.

The order is always accompanied by wild animals, some say that it was the saint herself who sent them to accompany the sisters, others whisper in secret that the animals are the sisters transformed by the saint's fury and the most courageous... or foolish... say they are some kind of mutant that can change shape at will, certainly unfounded rumours...

Hey everyone I'm back with a new idea.
When I did the order of the Three Moons i had thought "what the Adepta Sororitas hate and would never work with?" psykers, so I made an order composed entirely of witches. And now the Order of the Saint's Fingers came out of thinking "what do people relate the sisters to a lot?" fire, so I made an order that uses ice.
I used the Inuit people, culture and mythology for their look.
