I’ll briefly mention a couple more that I had to skip: Mask with a Squatting Figure on Top of a Tall Oval Head by the Afikpo Igbo that’s at the Manchester Museum and Mask with Horns by the Igala which is at the National Museum in Lagos, Nigeria. Couldn’t find any images of those which is too bad because they both sound interesting. The first one just sounds awesome; and the second one is the first of these African masks I’ve posted about that is actually in a museum that’s actually, you know, in Africa, so that’s cool. Like I said before, the Manchester Museum is in a transitional phase and I couldn’t find a website for the National Museum in Lagos at all. We’ll circle back later.

Anyway, after a couple that I wasn’t that crazy about, we’re back to these masks being awesome. One of the mythological figures of the Guro was a warrior that had attributes of both a leopard and an antelope and this mask is obviously based on that character. I don’t really have anything insightful to say; I just think it’s badass. As always with the British Museum, if you go to the link you can zoom way into the image and see an incredible level of detail.
