    Backstory
Martin Strange was born to Stephen and Clea Strange, raised in a secret location even unknown to him. At six they had to leave on an important mission and he was instead given over to Wong at Kamur-Taj for instruction. He awaited their return, but the longing turned into resentment, which set him on a self destructive course.

More difficulties arose as Strange believed he was being unfairly treated for being the “Son of Strange”, held back from higher studies due to his lack of control and anger. He secretly delved into forbidden arts, creating a rebellious group of students. Wong discovered this and expelled him as a bad influence, intending to teach him more personally, but Strange fled, choosing instead to live on the road.

As a teenager, he was recruited into the Agents of Fortune, a gang of mercenaries with an inclination toward magic and vigilantism. He hid his past from them, thinking that they too would treat him differently, but instead he found renewed purpose as they had a need for someone with his knowledge and skills. They used the darker side of magic for seemingly good, such as removing criminals and acquiring dangerous artifacts. They also had access to tomes and scrolls that were otherwise forbidden in Kamur-Taj.

During this time, Strange went under the alias “Bloodwing” and eventually rose high in prominence within the Agents. He was tasked with eliminating and sealing dangerous demonic presences on Earth, taking them back to the Dark Retreat, their stronghold. While there he became aware of the Agents’ true purpose, as the active arm of the Cult of the Harvesters of Eyes. He had heard of this cult in passing, but had dismissed them as rumors.

Strange was invited to the Inner Circle, the highest ranking within the Cult. He met its half demon leader, Vera Gemini, and the other prominent members who told him of the Cult’s goal. They were to become the mortal instruments of Xenogenesis, a ritual to have the demon race be reborn on Earth. It became clear to Strange that the Inner Circle were all possessed and that he was chosen to become one of them. The ceremony nearly claimed him, if not for the timely intervention of his grandfather, Dormamu. The Inner Circle was destroyed and the demons banished in the ensuing battle. Vera Gemini escaped.

Dormamu claims that he already planned to move against the Inner Circle as the demons were particular annoyances of his, as they interfered with him on more than one occasion. Pleased with his grand-nephew’s skills and “ambition” with the dark arts, he offered a choice: kill his enemies for him and he will stave off his conquest of Earth. With little choice, Strange took up the offer. He was given Exitus, a sentient sword of ancient power.

With the Harvesters of Eyes defeated and scattered, Strange took up residence in the former headquarters, the Dark Retreat. His first visitor was Wong, warning him of the path he now treads. Strange, having reflected on his past and where it brought him, relented his actions, but tells Wong he intends to make up for it. He asks to teach him again to prepare for the coming trials.

Strange then took up a new mantle as the Demon Hunter, protecting Earth from supernatural affairs.

    Alter Ego
As Martin Strange, he works at a university as professor of religion, mythology and occultism. He subtly places emphasis on parables, tales and charms that protect, hoping that perhaps even one of his pupils may be able to deliver themselves from evil. At the same time, he dismisses the reality of magic, hoping to dissuade others from pursuing it out of safety and secrecy.

    Personality
Strange carries himself with a level of mature wisdom, tempered by years of poor choices and mistakes that he’s learned from. He is not immune to darker thoughts that stem from them, however. His time as Bloodwing haunts him once he realizes what he was used for in the Agents of Fortune. He rarely opens up to others and keeps his troubles to himself. Despite his stoic demeanor, he often has a flair for the dramatic to impress and bewilder. He is given to perform elaborate gestures and emphatic speeches.

    Abilities
    • Magical Practitioner: Strange has an innate skill with magic that even he does not fully grasp, which has allowed him to perform feats that surprise his foes as much as himself. He primarily relies on illusions for stealth and defense.
    • Innate Psion: In addition to his magic, Strange’s telepathic and telekinetic abilities are perhaps more impressive, which he has used in conjunction with one another.
    • Hybrid Biology: Strange has enhanced strength, stamina and durability from his Faltine ancestry. He may also call upon it to enter into a “Faltine State”, which changes his appearance and multiplies his abilities further, but rarely used this due to his lack of control and discipline.
    • Weaponmaster: During his time as Bloodwing, Strange learned to master all manner of weapons to aid him in combat, from medieval blades to modern firearms. He has earned a reputation as something of a swashbuckler.
    • Enchanted Intellect: While not a genius, Strange uses memory spells and psionics to manage all the knowledge he has accrued over the years. His mind is protected by layers of mental training, magical warding and sheer willpower, making it an impressive fortress to invade.
    Equipment
    • Exitus: A sword given to Strange by Dormammu, symbolizing their pact. It was forged using pieces of broken dimensions Dormammu had conquered. It can warp reality and transport those killed by it into itself, trapping them within, or it can “unmake” a target by way of a killing blow. It also exhibits a collective sentience that speaks to Strange.
    • Dimension Cloak: A magical item crafted by the Agents of Fortune. It can warp space around it, allowing the wearer to absorb, reflect or deflect projectiles such as bullets, magic and energy projections. Overwhelming power can damage the cloak however, which it can heal over time. If Strange wraps himself in it, he may teleport a short distance or turn invisible. It also contains a pocket dimension in which Strange may store items.

    Lair - The Dark Retreat
The Dark Retreat is an enchanted building that exists within a “space between spaces” as well as the physical world. Its exterior and interior typically looks like a gothic mansion, but it may shift itself to match local architecture and time period to better blend in with its surroundings. It does this because it may appear in any spatial location of a currently uninhabited building or in a location that once had a building on it.

Inside, the Dark Retreat contains many dark artifacts and mystic tomes that were a part of the Harvesters of Eyes collection. Now that Strange has taken control of it, he has become their caretaker and in some cases, jailer. The lower levels of the retreat contains a dungeon that connects to the Negative Zone, which Strange has used from time to time to exile troublesome foes (which has had repercussions).

Due to it being a stronghold for the Cult for many centuries, an “air of evil” has permeated its existence, which has resulted in a servitor named Darkly. He knows the will of the Retreat and acts in its interests, oftentimes in opposition to Strange. This is also at odds with his nature, as Darkly must serve the “master of the house”, so he is often torn and tormented by his actions. Strange treats him with respect regardless, seeing much of himself within him, hoping that simple kindness may dispel the evil of the Dark Retreat.

Darkly appears as a sullen, pale young man of indeterminate age with dark hair and dark eyes, dressed in a Victorian suit. He is polite and courteous, if not dour and sullen. In his words, happiness does not come easy to him.

    Notable Villains
    • Darksider: A being composed completely of Strange’s unwanted selfish desires and impulses as he attempted to shed the “evil” of his mind. This resulted in a psychic construct that took physical form during the expulsion process. They had to be reunited lest he run free and sow chaos. He is currently imprisoned within Strange’s mind.
    • Annihilus: Lord of the Negative Zone, a realm of desolation and on the verge of collapse. He seeks retribution after Strange began exiling dangerous villains into the Negative Zone, which angered Annihilus because of all the “trash”.
    • Baron Mordo: An old nemesis of the original Dr. Strange. He Appeared to be a helpful ally, as both he and the Demon Hunter work for Dormammu, although neither of them know the true purpose of the other’s arrangement. He acts as a counterpart mentor to Wong. Mordo secretly believes that he is once again being passed up for one of the “Strange” bloodline. He intends to corrupt and eventually kill Strange, becoming Dormammu’s one true servant on Earth. Is the current caretaker of the Sanctum Sanctorum, guarded by the Elder God Pluorrg.
    • The Agents of Fortune: The militant wing of the Harvesters of Eyes, former allies of Strange during his time in the Cult. They hate Strange for betraying them. Many of them are minor talents in magic, but augment themselves with potions and magic items to increase their threat. They are adept stealth operatives that specialize in assassination and theft.
    • Vera Gemini: The half demon daughter of Demon Lord Belathauzer and the head of the Harvesters of Eyes. She wishes to complete Xenogenesis, where demons will be reborn on Earth and conquer it. As a reward, she will attain full demonhood and take her place at her father’s side. Other demons view her existence as “incomplete” and “blasphemous”, which reinforces her own self loathing.
    • Belathauzer: A two faced demon lord of Hell and member of the Ruling Circle, an alliance of demonic overlords who are taking part in Xenogenesis. They had almost completed their task before Strange’s inclusion and the sudden arrival of Dormammu. Belathauzer vowed revenge and cursed Strange.
    Author’s Notes
Spidersonas are fun and all, but I figured I could delve into something similar. I don’t know Marvel terribly well outside of the films, but I do know the tale of the Demon Hunter (aka Devil Slayer, Bloodwing). His publication history is kinda wild and it’s cool that he eventually made it into Marvel, but I feel he and his villains were underutilized (to my knowledge). I like his style and his 70’s rock inspiration, which I think also fits into the psychedelia of Doctor Strange. So I guess I made a Strangesona.

    Notable Aliases:
    • The Blue Oni
    • Son of the Hand
    • Neitokurawa
    • Elf
Theme Song: Turning Japanese by The Vapors

    Abilities:
    • Teleportation: Bamf. Vanishes in a puff of sulfurous smoke, reappears elsewhere in a flash. Travels through a hellish dimension when teleporting, he is only partially aware of being there.
    • Pocket Dimension Storage: He can store things (usually his sword) in his teleportation dimension and summon them into his hands.
    • Wallcrawling: Can walk on vertical surfaces, though not as efficiently as Spider-Man.
    • Hand Training: Aside from his mutant powers, he’s also highly trained in stealth, martial arts, espionage, etc.
    Backstory
The mutant who would later be called Nightcrawler was not one of the many born from random chance- he was born through plots and schemes that went back centuries. The faceless one, Mystique, leader of the Japanese sect of the hand, was the architect of the plan. The Hand’s goals are too numerous and shifting to fully understand, but one constant that has always remained is their goal of creating the ideal killer. Countless superhumans owe their powers to the Hand’s machinations. It was the year 198X when the Hand began focusing on mutants. Mutants could be incredibly powerful and loyal, and could pass their mutations down to their offspring, guaranteeing a lineage of superpowered assassins- so long as those mutations were useful. Every sect of the Hand conducted their own experiments with mutants in their own way.

The Japanese sect, led by Mystique, took the simplest approach. If you wanted a stronger mutant, you’d need a stronger bloodline. The first attempt was done ‘traditionally’. Mystique herself would provide the mutant gene, and the rest would come from one Matthew Murdock, a traitor to the Hand better known as Daredevil. Using her shapeshifting abilities, Mystique took the form of Daredevil’s lover, Elektra. The blind devil’s bastard son was born shortly afterward.

The blue-skinned, devil-horned mutant was raised and trained to serve the Hand’s purposes, and he did so loyally for many years- until one fateful mission. The target wasn’t just another underling with ambitions, or some jumped-up yakuza boss who thought he could be something more. This target was Anri Makino-Wagashi, one of the Hand’s later artificially grown mutant assassins. Despite this, Anri had been created using the same mix of Daredevil and Mystique’s genes that had produced Nightcrawler- technically speaking, he was her brother. More immediately worrying was the mutation she had developed. As far as the Hand could determine, even the slightest touch of Anri’s skin would be nearly fatal. Before, she was called Dofuku- the Poison Girl. Now, having fled from her makers, she was nothing more than a rogue.

Despite all of Nightcrawler’s training and the mental indoctrination he’d suffered, he still found himself plagued by doubt. The assassin’s way was to be detached from the target, to make them less than human in your mind. But this was Anri, someone he had known since he was still a child. It had been impossible for anything like a normal sibling relationship to develop, but there was at least something.

Nightcrawler found her on the outskirts of Osaka. The rogue had cut herself off from the Hand, and yet she was clearly prepared for him. Despite his doubts, the son of the Hand still drew his sword. Even with his powers of teleportation, the two siblings were an even match for each other. When Anri managed to touch him, and the true extent of her mutation was revealed, the balance shifted. Suddenly, she was matching his teleporting move for move. When Nightcrawler ran half-conscious through the hellish dimension that his power took him to, Anri was there, chasing after him.

A second touch of Anri’s power settled the fight. She could have killed him, and were she still under the influence of the Hand, she would have. Instead, she spoke to Evan. Told him that she knew how the Hand punished failure, even for their great mutant projects. Told him that she knew the conflict in him, because she’d felt the same.

“If I’m right at all, go find the old master Stick. Otherwise, you can go back to the Hand and let ‘em throw you aside.”

Anri left Evan there, with a choice and a name. The path to redemption lay before him, and all he had to do was take the first step.

    Author’s Notes by Mrevantheone
So, Nightcrawler, my favorite X-man. I figured that the dude’s super agile, great with swords, and can vanish in a puff of smoke- basically 75% of the way to being a ninja. I figured, why not go the rest of the way and throw him into the Hand. From there, a whole web of re-done X-men characters as ninjas began to take shape. I’m looking forward to sharing more of them later on.

    Name: Jubilee
    Alter Ego: Jun ‘Jubilation’ Lee
    Species: Mutant, Vampire
    Origin: China, Earth
Affiliation: The Hand (Formerly), The Defenders

    Relationships:
    • Morbius (Vampiric Patron)
    • Master Monkey (Mentor)
    • Nightcrawler (It’s complicated)
    • Wolverine (Pseudo-father)
    • Sabretooth (Pseudo-uncle)
    Notable Aliases
    • Jiangshi
    • Sparkles
    • Kung Fu Vampire
Theme Song: Firework by Katy Perry (Jontron Cover)
    Abilities:
    • Lumikinetic Explosive Light Blasting: Can create ‘fireworks’- globules of explosive energy of varying power. She can throw them at range or infuse them into her unarmed strikes.
    • Vampiric Abilities: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Immortality, Enhanced Senses, Fangs, Blood Drinking
    • Hand Training: Aside from her powers, she is also trained in martial arts, stealth, assassination, etc.
    Backstory
Jun Lee was a mutant captured by the Chinese sect of the Hand as part of their jiangshi project- infecting mutants with the curse of vampirism to enhance their powers even further. At first, the hand kept her in a blood-starved state, to ensure her loyalty. Interference from one of the Hand’s old enemies- a wandering mutant known only as ‘the wolverine’ led to her being set free along with the other jiangshi. She’s since joined with Nightcrawler, another former Hand assassin, using her curse to battle against the forces of evil while evading the ever-persistent hunter, Sabretooth, a relative of the wolverine and one of the Hand’s top agents. Currently, Jubilee is focusing on unraveling the North American sect of the Hand. When she and the other jiangshi fled to America, Masato ‘Morbius’ Miyamoto- high-ranking leader of the Hand and Jubilee’s vampiric progenitor- followed, eventually taking control of the American sect himself. She continues to fight against them as a member of the Defenders, out of guilt, atonement, and more importantly a deep-seated need to blast a bunch of edgy ninja dorks with fireworks.

    Author’s Notes by Mrevantheone

Ah, Jubilee. My first introduction to the X-Men was the 90s cartoon, which featured Jubilee as one of the core team members (even if she was a little useless at times). Naturally, I assumed that she was an important character in the comics as well. She is not. So, in this Marvel AU project, I decided to give my personal favorite mutant gal the spotlight she never really had. Working in the vampire angle was a no-brainer, since I might be one of the only people who didn’t mind the Vampire Jubilee story arc she went through- though, it was strange that becoming a vampire made her lose her mutant powers. So in this universe, she gets to have both. Of course, once I figured out the basics of her backstory, fitting Morbius in was a no-brainer.
