A Palace Entrance with a Turret
    (16th Century) – The Edo
    Media: Brass
    Location: State Collections, Berlin

The Benin Bronze we’re looking at today is one of my favorites so far. It’s also the first we’ve seen so far that isn’t held by the British Museum, instead residing in the collection of the State Museum of Berlin. It pictures a turreted entryway flanked by guards. A snake slithers down the roof of the entryway. The pillars are covered with brass plaques of faces (not, apparently, made of severed heads which is what I at first thought!). This one feels really detailed.

To continue with our tale of the Benin Empire, let’s pick up with James Phillips who is preparing to lead an expedition to Benin City “to open the Benin Territories” to trade with the British again. In a letter to the Home Office, Phillips spoke more bluntly: “I therefore ask for his Lordship’s permission to visit Benin City in February next, to depose & remove the King of Benin.” He asked for a large military force to be sent to him for his use in the expedition, including 400 soldiers, several cannons and a Maxim gun. He sent the letter on November 17, 1896, and then, without waiting for a response, he immediately left for Benin City, accompanied by a handful of British officials and businessmen and a couple of hundred native porters.

Phillips’ actions here are confusing and have been the cause of much debate over the years. Why send a letter to London requesting “permission” to lead an expedition to Benin City in “February next” and then start out on the expedition in early December without having received a response? Why request a large military contingent “in order to obviate any danger,” to use Phillips’ own words, and then head off on the expedition with only five soldiers and no heavy military equipment? Phillips sent word ahead to Oba Ovonramwen, the King of Benin, that they were on their way for a visit, but Ovonramwen sent word back that no foreigners could be allowed in the city because they were in the midst of a religious ceremony. Phillips pressed on, overruling his own advisors and translators; Ovonramwen told his council that he believed “the whitemen are bringing war to Benin.”

On January 4th, 1897, the Phillips expedition was ambushed by warriors from Benin and the result was a massacre in every sense of the word. The official number of men on the expedition was recorded as 259; of that number, two survived. Phillips, six other Europeans and all 250 support staff were killed. The motivations for Phillips’ erratic actions remain unclear, but the result had been exactly what one might have predicted: absolute ruin, violence and death.

On January 9th, 1897, a response from the British Foreign Secretary arrived at Phillips’ office. The request for his expedition was denied due to a lack of sufficient military forces. Phillips was directed to put off the expedition for at least another year. When that letter arrived, 257 members of the expedition, including Phillips himself, had already been dead for five days.

Next time, another piece of art from the Benin Empire and the devastating response of the British government to the massacre of the Phillips expedition leads us into the final days of that Empire.

^ A Maxim gun was one of the earliest workable machine guns. Against indigenous troops without firearms, the natives should have been massacred.

Ask, and ye shall receive! Matt posted this video yesterday. Benin is mentioned a couple of times, and it wouldn't have meant a thing to me if R1.5 hadn't been posting about it here.
