A few women regret the decision. That's true, and it's true of any decision. However, I feel that the lyrics, as most song lyrics are, are melodramatized.

While I am pro-life I try not to judge people in the situation as I have never faced it and consider myself unable to comprehend it fully.

It's a nice song, but I don't think any amount of people trying to sway me will bolt my pro-choice feet from the ground.
Whether I'd have one or not, I don't know.

    I'm in the same boat.

    Those lyrics are pretty effective.

Why can't you be pro-choice and also agree to the song? (Except the "mistake" part.)

Because right now the pro-choice movement is STRUGGLING to keep abortion legal - not to win more rights, just to preserve the few we actually have. Anti-choice doesn't need any help right now.

Regret and wondering what might have been is natural about any major decsion we make in life. There are plenty of songs about the 'one that got away' or that 'cat's in the cradle' song. THis is just one more song like that.

I think 'a few' is a rather gross understatement. And I think it's really insensitive to call this melodramatic when this singer is speaking from a real personal experience. I doubt any of us who has not been in that situation can really understand. I grant that his feelings are 100% real.

Thanks for posting the lyrics, Mulacki. I hadn't heard of that song before, but I agree that when faced with raw honesty, the supposed ''hot issues'' become a lot more real and personal. In a probably inevitable move for this thread, I'm going to post a similar song by Ben Folds called 'Brick'. It's a song a lot of people know, but I think don't take much time to really listen to. I have been at several Ben Folds concerts and each time there is someone present who has to have the popular song explained to them. You can see their faces suddenly grow serious as they realise the song isn't just to sound pretty.

I'll preface this by saying Ben is clear that this song was not at all meant as a kind of political statement. Far from it. He's simply a guy who writes from the heart, and this was an experience he had to share:

    6 a.m.,
    day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
    the smell of cold
    car seat is freezing
    the world is sleeping
    I am
    numb

    up the stairs
    to her apartment
she is balled up on the couch
    her mom and dad
    went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out

    and we drive
    now that I
    have found someone
    I'm feeling more alone
    than I ever have before

    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly
    off the coast and I'm
    headed nowhere
    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly

    they call her name
    at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
    then I walk down
    to buy her flowers
and sell some gifts that I got

    can't you see,
it's not me you're dying for?
    now she's feeling more alone
    than she ever has before

    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly
    off the coast and I'm
    headed nowhere
    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly

    as weeks went by
it showed that she was not fine
they told me, "Son, it's time
    to tell the truth" and
    she broke down
    and I broke down
    'cause I was tired...
    of lying

    driving back
    to her apartment
    for the moment we're alone
    yeah, she's alone
    and I'm alone
    and now I know it

    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly
    off the coast and I'm
    headed nowhere
    she's a brick and I'm
    drowning slowly

Don't think I've heard that song Mulacki, it's sad :(

That being said I remain pro-choice as we need to have abortion available for women who do choose to have it otherwise we run the risk of the death of mothers and not just babies.
But I don't know if I could have an abortion or not, it is, as someone said, a case-by-case choice.

Thanks for posting the "Brick" lyrics, jones, I was thinking of doing that.

It's an emotional thing, I'm certain (not having experienced it myself) and of course such a monumental decision comes with doubt on either side. That's what this song is reflecting, is all.

As an adamant pro-lifer, I really think this song demonstrates what I hear a lot of girls tell me. It seems to me as though every single woman who has ever been through an abortion regrets it sooner or later. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but eventually. The emotional effects of abortion seem so devastating; I think it goes beyond wondering about "other lives" you could have led or other choices you could have made--it's about a human life gone forever.

Odd you posted this on the birthday of a family member of mine, Mulacki.:p

Flipsyde is that annoying band that had their terrible and annoying ads playing during AdultSwim last summer. I hate that song, "some day" or something. Blah.

    Interesting lyrics.

I'm not against the option of abortion if the life of the mother and/or child is already in serious jeopardy, but I despise the absolute horrendous number of abortions that take place every year. Abortion is not just another form of birth control, people; we need some strong legislation on this.

And, yes, a woman's body is her own, just like a man's body is her own, but every person also has a responsibility to the sanctity of human life. Abortion is no more morally acceptable to me than suicide; yes, it's your body, but sometimes you do things to it that are damaging to society. Even Sartre believed that and he was an existentialist.

I like how everyone is singing (literally) the pro-life tune in here, and all of the people who want to express their pro-choice opinions are like "feh, forget it."

My feelings at this point are that despite I'm strongly pro-choice, I'm not going to change anyone's mind.
I guess pro-choicers are cynical like that.

dp mentioned something I think is a very good point. If I got my girlfriend pregnant the child is mine as well as hers. If she decided to have an abortion what about my child? The child that I would raise without her if need be because unlike her I take responsibility for my actions. I find abortion disgusting and I find the "woman's body" excuse to be just that. An excuse to get away with not excepting the consequences of your actions. It's never about the body. It's about the fact that people want to have sex without conqequences.

I agree, let's punish them with a child, and make them raise it for 18 years, and see how they feel THEN. That'll show them! I'm sure the kid will be really well off, too.

    This will end well.

Just a reminder that this is not the thread for debating the abortion issue. Please stick to the topic of the song lyrics and the emotional content. Thanks. :)
