I can't quite remember where, but it's said somewhere that Obi-Wan had a Coruscanti accent, I think maybe in the Dark Nest Tragedy when R2 is showing the holograms of Luke's parents. I was thinking, if a British accent is meant to portray a Coruscanti accent, then why aren't more Coruscanti cast by British people or people who can pull off the accent, or the antithesis, why is the accent listed as Coruscanti?

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was the Revenge of the Sith novelization that had the 'Coruscanti accent' bit.

That's correct. But it still doesn't matter.

I think Backlash had a holo of the "You may fire when ready" scene from A New Hope- with the characters noting that Leia's accent was slightly different - more Coruscanti.

Throughout the entire saga, Obi-wan's accent changes, so who knows what his accent is. He even pronounces his own name differently on several occasions...

Kit Fisto is Jamaican. The Clone Wars taught me that. Also smugglers and pirates are Mexican, and there's a planet of Scottish squirrels somewhere.

Some book stated that Ben Skywalker had a Coruscanti accent too. But I never read his voice with one. Am I evil?

Also, I find it hilarious that everyone (re: BioWare) equates "British accent" with "evil Empire" to the point that every single Imperial officer has a British accent in SWTOR, and yet there is a very well-known character in Star Wars who has a similar accent...

...and yet no one ever assumes he's evil or gives every single Jedi a British accent. Double standards, folks.

TOR should have used british accents for the Republic (not just proper english but all the other, it would be nice if the underworld NPC on Coruscant talked with cockney accent) and the Sith with some other accent – the classics would be russian or german but it would be fun with some other, less used, accent; what do people think of swahili or polish? Maybe mongolian?

British accent = Core Worlds/Coruscanti accent, particularly Coruscant, surrounding planets, Anaxes, Kuat and Rendili. Corellia is an exception as it has a standard American accent (Corellian). It didn't make any sense whatsoever for SWTOR's Sith Empire to have British accents when those guys didn't come from the Core worlds. They're all Outer Rim, so shouldn't they have some 'colonial' accent? I don't know, but it just doesn't make sense for SWTOR's imperials to have Core Worlds accents when they're not from.. the Core Worlds.

    IMO, the Republic should've had all the Imperial-type armor, ships and so on while the Sith Empire gets more alien looking designs, I mean it really bugs me that the Republic's got Rebel-style designs when it's supposed to be the Empire's predecessor, not the Post-Episode 6 NR. Oh well, that's a case for another topic, back onto accents;

Makes sense for Obi-Wan and most of the Jedi for that matter to have British/Coruscanti accents since they spent most of their lives on Coruscant. Most of the Imperial high ranking officers come from aristocrat families based around the Core Worlds, hence the British accents for them. That's the in-universe explanation anyway.

French for the Sith would've been good, have them toy with a Napoleonic Wars style concept, rather than the constantly rehashed World War II/American Revolution/American Civil War thing. It's like every part of the Galaxy's history is a constantly copied part of American history. [face_plain]

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played these games in some time. Twi'lek language as shown in KOTOR's apparently a major trade language in the Outer Rim, even used by one Mandalorian who refused to speak basic with humanocentric Sith. SWTOR's Empire is primarily based in the Outer Rim and some of the Unknown Regions. Makes perfect sense for them to use the Outer Rim trade language at the time.

I read a story that suggested if Ridley was playing Jaina or some other Solo kid, she'd better learn an American accent. And of course, that's how I read the Solo kids back in the day. But the whole thing about Ben made me think that given that Jaina and Jacen were largely raised on Coruscant -- aside from their stint on Anoth -- they'd probably have Coruscanti accents, unlike their parents.

And of course, the films have never assumed everybody with a British accent was Imperial/Sith. Far from it. Many of the Jedi used a British accent, as did Mon flippin' Mothma.

I can't imagine most of Jacen/Jaina's lines in British accents, especially in YJK. That's just me, though. I'd probably roll around laughing if someone with a clipped British accent say "I'm your daddy" to Allana. It just makes me giggle. [face_laugh]

    True that.

While it'd be sure to offend many in the States, the old Sith Empire having deep-south plantation aristocracy accents would be thematically appropriate.
The more I think about that, the more hilarious it seems.

Being from the American south myself I wouldn't mind hearing one but to be honest I'd probably laugh because I don't have a super country accent even though I am somewhat country myself and if one was used I know it would be one of those thick southern drawls. I honestly never really thought much on different characters accent until seeing this.

Not sure why it's offensive when the Brits already have to deal with their various accents getting used indiscriminately for villains.

I know plenty of British people who are (at least slightly) offended that their accents are traditionally villains in American films.
Also, the Empire was a new government comprised of the existing population, where the Sith are a new nation with villainy and enslavement of others built into their very culture. I'm not saying I'd be offended even if I had an accent anything like that, but I'd be more surprised if not even a few American Southerners were.
The challenge is to use things like this to add depth and symbolism without pissing too many people off. It isn't easy.

I always imagined a Southern accent being a variation of Corellian. Colonists I'd imagine.

Like half the ANH Rebel pilots. Which is why I find it odd the accent hasn't really cropped up anywhere else.
