No, they seem more like showboating to me, they serve no real purpose. Heck his overconfidence bit in the backside since Finn managed to land a blow on him when he did one of those again.

Agree about the overconfidence that cost him that lucky stab by Finn - but he immediately and easily took him down with exactly two strikes later...

I still find Kylo's swirls very elegant and beautiful to watch.

It is not this over-choreographed stupid nonsense after all...

Agreed. Also impressive considering the fact that he's severely injured and every movement must be incredibly painful. The fact that he retains his elegance is pretty hardcore, lol.

The thing about him, and this isn't a complaint by the way because it makes him more interesting. Is that he seems to be overcompensating to a degree. It's not that he lacks talent, but he does seem to lack confidence. And the reliance on theatrics/flashiness seems designed to compensate for that to a degree.

Because it looks like an actual FIGHT. You know, with weight and force behind it.

When I first saw Kylo Ren I thought he looked too young without facial hair but now I really like how he looks without facial hair. I thought he was weak after my 1st viewing but I realized I translated the lightsaber duel wrong on my 1st viewing. I'm really excited to see how much more powerful kylo ren becomes. I think a lot of young people can relate to how misguided n confused he feels. When he was talking to Han u can see that he was still battling light n dark until he kills his dad. Adam Driver really is the perfect actor for this role.

That's exactly what happened in Luke's Cloud City duel with Vader! Luke got a lucky strike in on the same shoulder and two motions later Vader disabled him. Probably the only moment in the movie Kylo Ren had in direct, non-twisted, comparison with Vader.

I loved seeing the ways that Kylo Ren used the Force (the earlier discussion). The blaster bolt held in mid-air was especially cool. But I do think that these are variations on things we've seen before, not totally new things. Meaning that while we haven't seen them done exactly this way before, we've seen similar things that are probably based on similar Force abilities. For example, the telekinesis used to stop that bolt is probably similar to what Vader was doing when he was using the Force to pick up heavy objects and hurl them at Luke during their duel in TESB. Ren uses his hand to focus on the bolt first, to get it to stop, but after that it's probably pretty similar; in one case, an object that would otherwise be moving is held still, while in the second case objects that would otherwise be sitting still are being thrown through the air. Secondly, for using the Force to extract information from someone's mind, recall that Vader read Luke's mind against his will in ROTJ (during a lull in their duel on the DSII), and learned that Luke had a sister.

yeah, gaining information from someone's mind is nothing new in Star Wars, however, I will say that Kylo came off as one of the more powerful usages of it wherein he basically "weaponized" it wherein when it occurs in the previous films, it's mostly the Force-user reading a stray thought / what's on the surface. so that makes Kylo unique in that aspect.

I like to think that since Leia seems to the be one more in tune with "feeling" something in the Force, that's Kylo's dark, twisted and evil version of it.

I would agree that the duel finds a much better middle ground than the prequels did post Darth Maul. The duel of the fates really was excellent and a fine example of Hong Kong style action used well without taking away from the drama/realism(at least in its own terms) of the situation(helped somewhat by Ray Park's skill I'm imagine) but after that it seemed Lucas fell in love with the style and overused it with too many sword spins and back flips.

Personally I felt Driver was excellent in the role as well BUT I think was having to work against the script a lot of the time which took a rather dull middle path with him. I think it would have been a lot more successful if either he'd stayed in "Vader mode" almost the entire film with very little hint(maybe a few vaguer comments from Han/Leia) at his true nature before the big reveal with Han OR he gets a lot more character build up giving some weight to his darkside turn and more of a link to Han and though him Rey/Finn.

Kind of like Vader in ESB actually. He's toying with Luke the whole time, until Luke manages to land a blow on his shoulder. And then Vader gets serious and ends the duel like five seconds later.

That image above is fine, but even without any artsy photoshop meddling the resemblance between the two is quite apparent.

I'm still puzzled by people who don't see the convincing resemblance of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) being Han Solo (Harrison Ford)'s son. (I mean do those people have eyes?!)

There is a serious reason why JJ relentlessly chased Adam to take the role (apart from the fact that Driver is a superb actor, is very tall, has a terrific voice and is one of the best casting choices ever...).

So, yeah, Adam Driver is totally Ben Solo, Han Solo's son and Anakin Skywalker's grandson. Case closed.

Especially the way he looks in the film, he genuinely looks like he can pass off as the son of Ford and Fisher.

I think it was perfect casting. He has that vibe of Han - perfect for Ben; while at the same time a little creepy and scary - perfect for Kylo.

Never seen pics like that but now I can see the similarities! Especially the nose...
I wonder if this was the cleanest performance (profanity wise) that Adam's done since Lincoln... :p

They really do look a lot alike. To the point that Driver might have even been a decent candidate for a young Han Solo, had he not played Kylo!
