From watching a lot of cartoons usually aimed at children, I've noticed the creators will often throw in jokes that will go over kids' heads, or be references to movies they probably shouldn't see. (TVTropes has a couple of terms for this: GettingCrapPastTheRadar and ParentalBonus. Be grateful I didn't link you to their respectful TVTropes pages.)

    Stuff I've noticed like:

In an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, when he's trying to give his pet snail Gary a bath, he disguises the tub as a pirate chest, with the soap as doubloons, and he says not to drop them :(.

On a recent episode of the Disney XD show Star vs. The Forces of Evil, the movie A Clockwork Orange is referenced with a bit referring to the Ludovico treatment. You know, this:

Speaking of Star vs The Forces of Evil, this bit:

could be interpreted as a reference to tentacle porn anime (In Disney cartoons? It's more likely than you think).

I'm just saying, kids' cartoons are more clever than people think.

The entire premise of "Chicken Boo" segments of Animaniacs. Or, really, Animaniacs in general...

I enjoy adult jokes in cartoons. As a kid I didn't get them, but as an adult they make my favorite childhood cartoons continue to be enjoyable.

I come from a generation that thought "nimrod" was another word for moron because Bugs Bunny called a raving hunter/caveman "a little nimrod".

The entirety of Adventure Time, though I really don't think kids should be watching that.

EDIT: Where adult jokes in kids' shows went meta was there were a series of "commericals" on the Boomerang Network, one of which involved Elmer Fudd going to therapy to try and understand why he kept going gaga for Bugs Bunny every time he saw him in drag [face_whistling]

EmpireForever: I've heard about that, and it's kind of creepier than anything I've heard about Dan Snyder and the stuff he puts into his shows (He was the fat guy on Head of the Class, and he went on to create and produce a lot of the live-action sitcoms on Nickelodeon, like iCarly).

Animaniacs elevated this concept to an art form. Nearly every episode had something in it adults could appriciate.

(in a scene where Yakko is posing as a King)
    Nurse: "Sire?"
    Yakko: "Wait till we're alone..."

One liners like that were perfect spit-take material.

    I Am Weasel:
    Too many to list!

There's a notable one in the pilot, This Bridge Not Weasel Bridge. Supposedly, workers have been building a cross-Atlantic bridge for years, living on the construction and then Weasel tells them they can be done by dinner. One of them pulls out a picture from his wallet and says: "I can't wait to see my little Johnny. He was born two years after I started this job!"

In I.R. on Sun, writing on the statue of Weasel says that he was the first man on Uranus, among other things.

I think that's were I may have read that silliness David. There's enough 'adult humor' in kids shows without trying to hard to make up crap like that.

Ewok Poet: Cow and Chicken and I. M. Weasel were jam-packed with them, so much so that one Cow and and Chicken cartoon, "Buffalo Gals" was banned by Cartoon Network after one airing for having a very obvious lesbian subtext (A woman's group called the Buffalo Gals goes around breaking into people's houses and chewing up their carpets, for starters).

That one was (obviously) never aired on Cartoon Network Europe, I keep on forgetting to see it. I saw everything else and now, years later, I am pretty sure it should have made unavailable to anybody under 14.

    (Paraphrasing for the YouTube impaired)
Barney: I'm going to get something to make me look taller
    Fred: How about another head?
Barney: Another head? What do I need three of them for?

Hey, I remember watching "Rocky & Bullwinkle" and "Dudley Do-Right" when I was a kid, then taking years to get some of the jokes. Now, they weren't adult, but they were jokes geared more towards my Mom & Dad then me. You have to remember that, way back when, cartoons were not just meant for kids.

    And, of course, there's this...

In the UK in the 70's and 80's we had a kids show called Captain Pugwash. It was full of characters who's names were double entendres; Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy.

Also, The Magic Roundabout was supposedly choc full of drug references

Gosh, how I hate The Magic Roundabount. Neighbours' children were watching that at our place because we had satellite long before cable became a standard and I JUST CANNOT STAND DIALOGUE TAGS WHERE THEY'RE NOT NECESSARY.

"said Florence" ...**** off. I saw her say it, I don't need your help.

Simpsons 1990 - 1997. This seems to coincide with the era when the show was actually good.

Not all animation is for children.
