I'm liking the start to this season so far. I miss Auberjonois, but he was underused anyway. It's kind of interesting to see John Larroquette taking a role that's very similar to what Candice Bergen was in the first season - coming in to help control Denny and the rest of the firm. Except whereas Shirley fired Sally, we see Sack showing... mercy, I guess?... in the matter of Clarence. Speaking of Shirley, her scene with Denny was great.

And the new young girl reminds me a bit of Lori from Season One (maybe I've just been watching too much S1 :p), particularly seeing them take on murder trials far before they're prepared. I like her relationship with Jerry, and Jerry's place in the firm now. I wonder if this trial will go on for an extended time period like Bierko's case last season. Good to see Brad as assistant D.A.; I really like that development.

I think they struck a good balance of tone here. This show has veered into the dramatic and wacky ends of the spectrum (the latter parts of Season 3 were a tad too far on the latter side for my tastes), but the mix in this episode was just right IMHO.

I *adore* John Larroquette and I love what they did with his character in the premiere - his subtle shift from being a "mean man!" to having a bit of a softer side. I mean, we've seen it done a million times, but it felt different with Larroquette's character in that, yeah, other characters had misjudged him, blah blah blah, but at the same time, through his silent observations, he realizes he's misjudged some people too. And I totally did not see his relationship with Shirley coming at all, especially after I got sucked into that sweet scene with Denny and Shirley.

I miss Auberjonois, as well. He really kept the show grounded, especially in regard to the wackier moments. It seems to me that Larroquette is going to have to fill those shoes now -- and they're big nose-I mean--shoes to fill. And yeah, you're so right about the new girl and Lori! I think she has a bit of Sally in her too. Who I really miss, though, is Tara. I wish they'd bring her back as a guest for an episode or something.

I was reading some comments over at the forum at boston-legal.org, and there seemed to be quite a few people put off by the ever increasing wackiness with Clarence and Jerry, but I have to admit that I love them for their quirks. And, honestly, I think it was a smart choice on the writers' part to bring in some oddballs because, I mean, how many times can they put Denny in a scuba suit before they start running out of mad cow jokes? I think that Clarence and Jerry keep the show's goofiness fresh because it's a different schtick. *shrugs*

Has anyone noticed that Clarence hasn't been on the show lately?

I've noticed that as well. He's been AWOL since the season premiere. To be perfectly honest I haven't exactly missed him. I've always liked Jerry better and I really like his pairing with the new girl. To me there's more potential character development in that relationship then Jery and Clarence and their hi-jinks. I really hope a romance develops between Jerry and her. He needs it.

Plus John Larroquette needs more screentime.

    Season Finale
    Boston Legal

"What began as a pretty conventional courtroom spin-off has morphed into prime-time drama at its most eccentric (could William Shatner and James Spader be an odder couple?) and political (does ABC know David E. Kelley gives weekly lessons in liberalism?). In tonight's finale, Spader's Alan defends a town's right to secede from the U.S., and an offended Denny (Shatner) represents the other side. Legal covers more hot-button issues than Law & Order and may be as satirically out-there as South Park. All of which makes it our favorite Kelley kreation of all time. ? Ken Tucker"

So we're a week away from the last hurrah for the crew at Boston Legal, and it seems that there's no prisoners being taken as we lead up to that road. After last week's fine return to top form by Kelley, he follows up with another writing credit on an episode that manages to be funny, relevant, touching and provoking all at the same time they break through the 4th wall and take a shot at their own industry.

...well, i have to admit i was sad to see this show end. It was consistently funny and usually pretty intelligent..

Having it end with Denny and Alan getting married is just.....pretty much the perfect way to end things.

I have to admit that since around about the middle of last season I had come to the conclusion that there was no other way that Boston Legal could end satisfyingly for me that didn't include Denny dying (preferably at Alan's hands as he had promised). But I never thought that they would do this, and I have to say I liked it.

I think the thing that really got to me with this series finale was that they were able to give each of the main characters a closing that is satisfying, non-definitive, and fits completely with what we have been shown over the years they've been on. Even for Paul, and that was about the juiciest of all the moments of closure.
