i am testing the demo.. so cool software, it's specific for such effects, i enjoy the explosion (firetrail plugin) and lightsabers are ready to use with all options available.

There is maybe an option also for track the lightsaber to the guide sword or i have to set frame by frame?

It can't be as good as After effects though.

I have AlamDV2 (Is Alam 3 out yet?!) and I use it for muzzle effects mainly. I can't see it doing well for lightsabers... unless someone made a cool plugin for it?

Just Get After Effects. You'll be happy with it. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES!!! ;)

Edit: Yeah, I know AE isn't the only Effects program in the world but I feel it has the most user friendly interface. Commotion Pro is ok, and Eyeon's Digital fusion can produce better results than AE, but I tried a demo and it's interface puzzles me to no end. Never tried Combustion, though I've heard it is quite good. In any case I belive that 9 times out of 10 AE is better suited to do compositing and effects work than Alam dv.

And AE has the most third party plug-ins!!!

I accept all substitutes that can get the job done. Alam DV for instance, has a bad ass proton beam plug in that After Effects does not. The best thing to do is have a bunch of programs...but if you work for a living, go with After Effects--it's the best overall.

I use Alam because I can't afford AE. It's really great, but REALLY specific. Basically, if you're looking for paste-on effects, Alam is the way to go. but it certainly ain't as fancy as AE and has a lot of limitations. Still, for 100 bucks, you can do some pretty cool stuff, and giving you 50 layers of effects to work with means you can tweak and add things to make it look original.

A lot of the draw is because most of the work is already done for you, and all you have to do is keyframe it. But really, there's something to be said for the ease of use. Lightsabers, muzzle flashes, and explosions all look amazing in Alam. (I think the original 'art of the saber' used it). You just have to ask whether you want a really expensive program that can do anything in the world, or if you really need that, and might be better suited to catering to your specific needs with a less costly one.

ok i just tested and created a clip
    storm3b.avi (1.9mb)
    [image=http://www.angelfire.com/film/armor/stormavi.JPG]
it's a nice program with nice effects ready to use; maybe the interface could be better.

We used AlamDV2 for the lightsaber effects for 'Art of the Saber'. You can decide if you like to glows or not. The program is really inexpensive and the glows were easy to add (yes frame by frame).

I might get it just for the fact that it was used in AOTS :D

EDIT: Nivlak, you seriously need to make AOTS 2 :D

I have it and It is so easy to use. It could produce better quality effects but it does a good job as it is. I plan to use it for my fan film too. I do know that Alam can do key-framing and tweening. Go to their website and check out some of "Tarns Tutorials" to see what I mean.

I use the AlamDV plug-ins in AE. That way I get more control over the effects. AlamDV is cool and all, but i'm used to AE.

if u buy alamdv2 now alamdv3 is a free upgrade. Alamdv3 + Chromanator is totally sweet for your fan films. CSB digital is really looking at the Amature Film Maker and his buget limitations while making and pricing their apps. They rock. Log on to the fxhome chat room and ask anyone your questions.

AlamDV2 is an old program now. We're currently working on AlamDV3, which will have a vastly improved interface amonst other things. As has been said, if you get ADV2, you get a free upgrade to AlamDV3 when it is released (we don't have a release date yet).

As somebody said, AE is a better compositing program than AlamDV, but AlamDV isn't meant to be a compositing program. Our other program Chromanator is for that.

AE does a variety of things, but then it should, considering how much more expensive it is. If you need fast and easy effects, or excellent miniDV compositing, however, then AlamDV3 and Chromanator do the job without breaking the bank.

Feel free to ask me any questions, either here or over at FXhome.com, or on support@fxhome.com.

I used the demo of alamdv back in the day. its good for people on a budget or people who don't like fiddling with settings. its a nice program and all, but its too basic for my liking. you can only add what is given to you. where as AE can add, manipulate, composite what ever you want.

if your starting out with effects (which most people on this thread seem to be) go for it. its a good price for what you get. But if you are looking for higher standards, turn to AE. as staited before "accept no substiutes"

You know it's not the wisest thing to broadcast that you have an illegal version of AE...just a thought...

Yeah, that's true--I wouldn't bragg about commiting a criminal act. It's like the guys who drive around with marijuana stickers on their cars.

BTW, does anyone know how to use the AlamDV plugins with AE?
