Okay, but if everyone could enjoy the different thing without the bizarre reframing of characters so tightly controlled by corporations that they have literally rewritten swaths of copyright law to hold onto them past the point of parody as “modern mythology” that’d be swell.

Edit: I am not exaggerating when I say that line of discussion actually gets my goat in a way the superhero film churn does not (and yes I realize that’s the context but I’m on a roll now). Even bracketing for the gulf introduced by commercialism, it’s not only a fairly unsophisticated way of grappling with the power of pop culture ideas on cultural imagination which doesn’t do anyone much good for the purposes of developing a greater understanding, but it’s also based on an extremely modern Protestant understanding of capital-R “Religion” as opposed to “mythology” that’s just... ugly.
