Everybody is looking at the 'Anakin, Anakin, Nooooooo' Phrase. Everyone seems to be overlooking the breathing of Vader at the end of it.

I may end up being way off with my theory, but nevertheless, its good to speculate. And after analysing that scene over and over again. IMO its definately not Qui Gon that says Nooooooo. My mate and I both thought that it could have been Yoda at first until we heard the breathing. Thats when I came up with that theory.

I like your theory very much Tonedus!

I'd love to see more made of Quigon in Ep3 as well...maybe in addition to your theory being realized there will be more of or about Qui-gon too..
To me, having seen it only twice in theaters, it seems to be
very clearly Qui-gon doing Anakin Anakin (the clip from TPM) and then a garbly 'no' that isn't him, followed by the DV breathing.
It really wouldn't make sense for it to be yoda's voice, since he is the one 'observing' the scene of anakin's pain, and we don't get a sense either from the film or from the novelization that he hears himself involved in this somehow (but that he does hear 'anakin's pain' and the surprising voice of Quigon, whom he understood to be beyond awareness.)

If someone knows for sure that Ben Burtt already said this is only the voice of Quigon, can they tell us where it's stated?

    Ben Burtt quote:

Q: Do I hear the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn shouting, "Anakin, Anakin... No!", in Yoda's apartment after Anakin attacks the Tusken Raiders?
A: Yes indeed, the voice that Yoda hears is that of Qui-Gon Jinn.

You can see it on the official site here

    Thank you, that certainly helps!

Though, at risk of seeming contrary, I still think his answer leaves open the possibility that it is not *only* Quigon's voice we hear, just as we hear too ( I really think it is clearly
there...) the DV breathing at the very end.

I saw the movie again tonight and specifically listened to the NOOO. It sure as heck doesn't sound like Qui Gon, and though I like the idea that it is Yoda, all I can say is that I will have to listen to it again before I'm convinced it's Yoda. It has always sounded like Cliegg but I think it is doubtful that it would be his voice. I don't think that we've heard Yoda wail like that before so it very well could be him.

    Attack of the Clones Screenplay
(fr. The Art of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, p.210)
    SCENE 121
INTERIOR JEDI TEMPLE, YODA'S QUARTERS-LATE AFTERNOON

YODA meditates and suddenly hears a familiar voice, as uf from a great distance. It is the voice of QUI-GON JINN, filled with alarm.

Qui-Gon:(V.O.) No Anakin! No! Don't! No!

MACE WINDU enters the room and sits down. YODA opens his eyes and loooks to MACE.

    Mace Windu: What is it?
Yoda: Pain. Suffering. Death, I feel. Something terrible has happened. Young Skywalker is in pain. Terrible pain.

Word for word from the screenplay.

Hope this clears things up. ;)

    Waaay off topic:

Thanks, Ice -- I hit post, rather than preview and remembered that snowboards doesn't use standard (ahem -- I use that word lightly) UBB Code. BTW, the fact that there is now a Blue Yoda avatar is quite scary, but no moreso than the the thought that Yarel Poof fathered so many children. ;)

Personally, I hear Qui-Gon shouting "Anakin" and then YODA (I'm sure of it) screaming "NOOOOO". I'm 99% sure. I mean it sounds EXACTLY like him in my opinion. Anyways...

What about the implications of this meditation scene on Yoda's change of his philosophical views by ESB? I think this scene is the first glimpse of that.

"But master Yoda said I should be mindful of the future" - "But not at the expense of the LIVING FORCE my young padawan learner"

And what are some of your alls ideas of a scene where Yoda could be screaming in such a fasion in Ep.3? I already gave a couple of mine.

No matter how many times I listen to it, IMO that is definitely not Qui-gon's voice. The "nooooooo" is someone else. I think it could be Yoda ...this is an interesting theory. Or it could be Anakin. Just because it was written into the script doesn't mean it is canon. :) This is something that could still easily be changed.

From the movie alone, there is nothing to indicate that is only Qui-gon's voice. This may be something we debate until 2005...but I *do* think there is a lot more going on in this scene than what we have seen and heard so far.

Really? You don't think that the "Anakin! Anakin!" part is Qui-Gon? i thought that was a given. Are you going just by theatre experience or do you have the sound bite?

If you don't, I suggest getting the sound bite of this scene. I makes a big difference, being able to listen to it closely and multiple times over. Then Yoda's voice will be more noticable too.

Ok iam going to put this out there and say i dont think it is any of the above Jedi saying NOOOOOOO. Yoda herd Qui-Gon saying ANAKIN ANAKIN and than a nother voice saying NOOOOOO and looking at it maybe it is Yoda saying it but i think it is a nother dead Jedi saying it if Qui-Gon can do it other Jedi can can tap in to it and thats want Yoda was hering...

    My opinion

Yoda was probing the future and got a collage of future events all at once

    Qui-Gon
    Maybe tusken sounds
    Noooo (someone)
    Vader breathing-exhale

This also may be the point at which Yodie see's the error in his thinking present/future and where he gets the idea about his "spirit" remaining after death

Ben Burtt does say that it was Qui Gon. But I think everyone has to agree that it certainly doesn't sound like him. With my theory that it is Anakin who says no, then that would be the major plot point where Anakin dies and becomes Vader. Hence the Vader Breathing straight after the Noooooo.

I'm not sure if someone has said this yet but: What if the WHOLE thing was in the future?

Yoda is meditating and hears Qui-Gon warning Anakin in the FUTURE (not during the Tusken slaughter in AOTC) and the scream is Anakin as he turns into Vader in EPISODE III (with the death of Padme' or falling into something hot-and-burny) ;)

It would make more sense this way, in that Anakin didn't hear QG at all when he was committing a little genocide...but he will in Ep. III and THAT is what Yoda forsees (hears).

Hmm, the site that used to host a ton of Attack of the Clones sound bites has now turned into a porn site. I was going to post the sound bite from the scene in question.

Anyone else have a working source? I think people need to download it for themselves.

As interestingly as this topic is, but I am more curious about the how it will be delivers (Acting, Dialogs, Emotions, Darkness) than what will be the reason.

This in reply to Jedi Tonedus's thought on a possible scene involving Anakin(Nooooo) in Ep III. This would be really cool if something like that happened. It feels creepy and really sad to think of Anakin waking up and seeing himself for the first time. BOY, THAT BIT ABOUT HIM TAKING HIS FIRST ARTIFICIAL BREATH WAS DRAMATIC. This is something I can really imagine. Imagine the horror that Anakin is experiencing if he wakes up and finds his body in that condition and then to hear his own fake mechanical breath!!!! (shivers) The poor guy.

Wow, I looked at that piece from the script and one think I did not realize is the phrase contains the word Don't in it. I have seen the movie probably about ten times and I thought I always hear "No, Anakin no, NOOOOO" However, knowing that the voice says NO and then DON'T makes that whole scene even more interesting to me.

DEATHTOJARJAR: "All right let me tell all of you something the 'ANAKIN!' was Qui-Gon but the no was in fact Clieg Lars who's gravelly voice sounds similar to Yoda's."

This is what I thought. I think Clieg Lars' voice sounds more like the "NOOOOO!" than Yoda's does. But none of us really know for sure whose "NOOOOOO!" it is.
