Ignore Ree Yees. He prefers the old men fighting like girls in ANH to the duels in AOTC.

Well, in AOTC Count DOoku is pretty old, and Yoda is 800 years old, so I guess the duel in ANH has younger participants. Heheh.

But why should he ignore me? It is rude to ask people to ignore others. That's how this world goes under.

I agree, I was a little harsh. Well, I still think Jackson overshadows Lucas with his 'LOTR' adaptation. If George could only get a little of that epic feeling across...an epic feeling that's definitely there in the classic trilogy: The haunting choirs as father and son clash into their final battle in "ROTJ", the rousing action and sadness as Leia sees Slave I take off from the East Platform, Luke Skywalker looking into the twin suns of Tatooine (and getting a severe eye problem)...all epic stuff. There's one epic moment in the prequels this far (at least truly epic), and that's the scene where Palpatine makes Amidala throw a tantrum in the Senate.

Corran_Katarn is right. He starts to pass out from the pain the moment it happens. He can't really scream out because of the shock. He would have dropped straight down, passed out right there if Dooku didn't Force push him away.

Anakin never see's the swordsmanship of Yoda that he thought he had surpassed.- White_Knight_ES1

That's true. However, I think Anakin says that "tongue in cheek." He's just being cocky to Obi-Wan.

I wasn't disappointed in Anakin losing his arm, but rather the way it occurred. As numerous other people have mentioned, his arm is hanging out there unprotected for way too long.- MobartZmuda

I don't think Anakin thought Dooku was going to go into a 360 degree move. It surprised him. No doubt, he lingered out there. But I think that was/is the point. At this time he is too offensive mided and he is not defensive enough. He gets lazy, he lolligags, he slacks. He underestimates Dooku.

For a brief second or two, his attention wanes. But that is all it takes. Remember, Anakin has been using his lightsaber, but he has not been in combat against someone else with a lightsaber. He really goes into it (the duel) thinking he's going to win. Instead of being humbled, he becomes bitter, vengeful.

sorry if this has already been addressed...but i am wondering why anakin was wearing that really clunky looking gold thing for an arm at the end.

That's exactly what I was wondering as well. With all their technology, why didn't Anakin have a more sophisticated and normal looking replacement like Luke did in ESB?

The main reason Anakin's sporting that "really clunky looking gold thing for an arm at the end" is because GL wanted to visually show the audience that Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader is under way because some people might think everything is perfect for him now (he's banging Padme!).

Another reason though is that the technology of the PT is not as advanced as in the OT. There is a 25 (or so) year difference between AOTC and ESB, so GL's trying to show that the PT, even though it looks better visually because it's a newer movie, is not as advanced technologically as the OT.

The last reason I can think of is that Anakin likes the way the hand looks -- it is made out of gold!

I just wish the fight was a little bit longer. It would have been nice since it would have built up the moment a little better. As for his reaction I have no problem with it. I don't think Anakin even had time to panic or go into shock as Dooku gave him a pretty hard force push that knocked him goofy (if not unconcious).

"but I know alot of people who didnt even notice he lost his arm untiil he had the metal one at the end."

What?! Were these people asleep. Everbody else here says Anakin's arm was sticking out begging to be chopped off and they didn't even notice? Amazing. George probably did it that way so all the slow people could catch it, and yet a few still fell through the cracks I guess. Didn't catch his stump when he went flying across the floor, laid there, or when he got up either?
These people obviously need help. If they didn't catch that, they'll have to watch almost all the DVD in slow motion with subtitles. :)
I had no problem seeing, and was pretty shocked at the time. Quite brutal. The silence of Anakin seemingly fainting made it all the more shocking.

Another thing, why do people keep saying Anakin has a gold hand at the end? I never thought that. It was a silver hand reflecting the golden Naboo sunlight. Obviously, Lucas had to illuminate it since people apparently wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. Somewhere on the official site the prop hand is shown, and it is clearly silver, not gold. Do you really think he'd give the future Darth Vader, a man who wears only black and silver a garish gold hand?

The way that he hung the arm out like that...could it be that Dooku was using a force push/grab on the arm to get it to hang out like that? sort of pinning him up with the force. I was a bit dissapointed with the look of it myself, but I wonder if that could be the case. Then again, I could just be trying to reconcile it within myself. However, Anakin did have a look of shock right before the blow, so it could just be that he was caught off ballance.

and as to whether it was the same one...I think not. The one that Vadar looses is much thicker than the skeleton like one we see at the end. Vadars also had much more wires and smaller parts, not thick hyrolic looking tubes. I think that when he gets the suit, the arm comes with it. And for all we know, the suit probably has some sort of pain/sensory system that allows him to feel things. He even cries out when his armor protects him in ESB, remember?

Anyway, I love the parallel there, that he loses an arm on the path to evil, and is given a new body (with a new arm) to complete the transition. Then, he loses a hand on the path back to good, and is given back a whole body as a ghost.

The lightsaber duel was very "ordinary". Usually the saber duel is the highlight of the film, but there didn't seem to be much emphasis on this one.

I liked Luke's scene better, only b/c I think Anakin was unemotional( most of the time!) in the movie. Screams are always effective! ;)

I wouldn't call the Episode II duels "ordinary". If any duel looked ordinary it would be ANH Obi-wan v. Vader or ROTJ Vader v. Luke. If you have watched those two since AOTC, you'll see what I mean.

edit: before I get flammed, I just wanted to say that I'm calling the ROTJ and ANH duels ordinary strictly based on the fighting choreography and not on the emotions or whatever else is involved in the duel.

The trouble with the episode II duel in my opinion is that GL had to tone everyone down so that in episode III there will be a noticeable improvement in their abilities (at least for Obi-wan and Anakin). In addition, I think GL was trying to make each duel top the other for episode II. Anakin's topped Obi-wan's because he used two sabers. Yoda's topped everyone's because he's Yoda!

I immensely enjoyed the duels in episode II, I just don't like Anakin's arm sitting out in the open for 2 or 3 seconds.

Well, the way it was filmed and cut(no pun intended), it's impossible to tell how long Anakin's arm was extended there, but certainly it's not 2 or 3 seconds on-screen, probably a half-second to a sec max. All those close-ups made it really hard to see what was happening.
Again, the close-ups may have been a choice for editing's sake, not just style though I have no way of knowing the intricate workings of GL's brain. However, it seems likely there was much more action in those duels, esp. Obi's and Anakin's, which had to be trimmed down to keep Yoda on top, as stated above. Who knows how much time they had to perfect Yoda's duel. What we saw might have been all they had time for.
Anyway, there may have been more fighting that got Anakin in that position that we didn't see. The close-ups may have been a convenient way to cut out a lot of the action and get right to the finale of Anakin's arm getting chopped off. It's rumored that Anakin even did some damage to Dooku in the extended version of the fight. Likely that would really tick him off and maybe make him pull some dirty tricks that got Anakin's form all messed up, a la Vader hurling objects at Luke in ESB, though surely something more original since that's done with Yoda ( or maybe not, and that's another reason it got cut, redundancy.)
I still hope V8DER is right and one day we'll see an extended cut with more intricate lightsaber battles at the end.
Someone's mentioned this before that it's possible Dooku did a force grip on Anakin and pulled his arm out like that to chop it off. Afterall, he did hurl him back with the force so why not? That would make sense if Anakin was tiring him out and he had to do something dirty to end the battle quickly. His superior knolwedge of the force would allow him to pull that trick on Anakin who even after fighting for quite some time before the duel showed no signs of fatigue in face-to-face combat with Dooku.
There may even be sound to tell us that if the force grip is the cause. Is there deep base rumbling right before the arm goes? Anyone checked a sound clip? If not, perhaps it would be added in for the DVD.

I don't know if I should say this (please don't ban me), but I happen to have an illegal copy of AOTC on my computer, and according to my RealOne Player, it is 2 complete seconds from when Anakin sticks his arm out to when Dooku does his spin move and takes a swing at it.

What makes the scene seem longer to me though is how the camera is close to their faces almost the whole duel and then it pulls up to an over the head shot-- you just know something's about to happen.

I for one was disappointed with the way Anakin got his arm chopped off. In the ESB, as a comparison, Vader locked sabres with Luke, pushed the sabre away, and then cut off Luke's hand. For one, that was more impressive and cool looking than Dooku's little slow swipe. Second, I like Luke's reaction better than Anakin's. I just think it was poorly edited because as stated before, it looks like Anakin just stands there with his arm wide open. Geez...I could have cut his arm off with him standing like that. No defensive posture for Dooku to beat...which is what made it utterly disappointing. Oh well. I hope EpIII is the best of them all.

I don't know if this pretains to anything in this one, but I honestly think that Anakin v. Dooku was far too short. As I'm sure you all remember, in Luke v. Vader, that was a very long duel. I think it also showed Vader/ Anakin's mastery of the voice b/c he was moving nad throwing all those objects. But then again, Annie had been training under Sidious for a long time at that point whereas Dooku only had a dozen or so years.

Anakin's reaction IMO is great...the guy passes out from the pain. He's a 19 year old kid....think about what you would do if you looked over and your arm was lobbed off with your bone sticking out and blood pouring out. The pain would for sure make your faint, not a question. So his reaction is quite realistic. As for his arm being left out in the open, sure it seemed a little obvious and stupid of Anakin to do it, but I think it shows that Anakin is not as headstrong as he thinks he is. He's overconfident in his abilities and as someone said before, underestimated Dooku and thought he was going to win the fight.

As for the robotic arm, its great, it shows the progress in technology when we get to Empire.

I dont understand how Anakin could get beaten so easily if he is so in tune with the force. If he has a midi count higher than yodas then surely he should be able to kick Dookus' ass.

well after watching it again in slo-mo on the dvd, man he just hung his arm out! it was a grave tactical error. his defense was lowered for what seemed like an eternity, allowing dooku to complete a 360 and take off his arm. all the while anakin stood and stared.
