Excellent post, nien numb. Nice name, by the way.;)

I too get choked up when I see Vader's "face" in the Throne Room looking on as Palpatine deep-fries Luke. I don't know how a frozen metallic mask can have so much expression, yet it does.

I'm not sure at this point that Anakin values the company of Palpatine OVER Obi-Wan.

I think it's kind of like taking something for granted, like your boy/girlfriend, simply because you're around that person all of the time. So you meet this other person that seems intriguing and offers good advice...

I think that Anakin really likes Obi-Wan a lot as a Master, the problem being that Anakin is 18 years old and Obi-Wan probably less than double that.

I guess what I'm saying, is that, if it came down to Anakin taking a bullet for Palpatine or taking one for Obi-Wan (or, to put it another way, if he had Spiderman's horrible choice in the film), he'd choose Obi-Wan.

But, what will happen is that Anakin will feel betrayed by Obi-Wan - and that will be the last straw, IMHO - his mother dead - Padme either dead, presumed dead, or left him, and now finally Obi-Wan "betraying" him.

It will be at that point that Palpatine welcomes him with open arms:

"Welcome Anakin - I am aware of your loss and I want you to know how sorry I am. Let me guide you, and I promise you'll never have to feel like that again - you will be more powerful than anyone in the galaxy!"

    Or something to that extent.

So yes, I think this will be an emotional duel, especially because we'll be looking at it with having seen 5 other SW movies lead up to this moment.

You have a good point there too.

It's going to be very interesting, I know. I think this will be the mother of them all. It has to be good. I highly doubt it will be disappointing. I will go in only with the expectation that Anakin falls, Obi-Wan flees, the Jedi almost all die, The Empire forms... the stuff we all know will happen. I'm just curious to see how it all ends up.

I know everything will finally come to rest though. Hopefully no more mysteries to figure out and everything is there in bold. I'm tired of guessing! I wanna know!!! C'Mon EpIII!!! Under 696 days left!!!!!!

P.S. Hyperspace webcam... worth it. I couldn't hold out any longer despite my firm stance on not paying for content. See what Star Wars does to me?! :p As others posted a while back I think the appropriate new logo should look something like this: $TAR WAR$

I really hope that during the Anakin/Obi battle, they play the same music from the ROTJ Luke/Vader battle. That music gives me chills.

I think the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin will be similar to the one between Luke and Vader in ROTJ. Obi-wan won't want to fight Anakin at first; he'll be defending himself from Anakin's attacks. Finally Anakin will say or do something that makes Obi-Wan lose it. Obi-Wan will be kicking Anakin's butt but he will stop himself short of actually killing Anakin (just like Luke in ROTJ. He defended himself until Vader threatened to try to turn Leia to the Dark side).

In ROTJ, Vader decides to defend Luke from the Emperor's lightning by killing the Emperor. He turns back into Anakin the moment he does this. Like most people I think Anakin will have turned away from most of his Jedi training by the time he and Obi-wan duel, but he will turn completely to the dark side during the Obi-Wan duel or because of the duel and become Vader.

To answer the question I don't know if this duel will be more emotional than the ROTJ duel, but it will be very emotional because these two love each other and because of the father/son (or more likely older brother/younger brother) relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin.

All I know is it's going to be the most emotional for me. I am going to get great satisfaction seeing Ben kick the shorts off of puke face.

I'm hugely anticipating Obi-Wan's victory here. Too many people have forgotten that he's the only Jedi to face Darth Vader and live to talk about it.

I really hope that during the Anakin/Obi battle, they play the same music from the ROTJ Luke/Vader battle. That music gives me chills.

That's a good idea, but it'd be far cooler if they played that in an Anakin/Dooku battle. IMO.

Well is he really Darth Vader at that point though yet? ... screw it, I am still dying to see this scene :D As we saw in TPM, Obi-Wan is an incredible swordsman, and so will be Anakin. But I'll be happy to see Obi-Wan win. If done right, it should be full of action, emotion, and wowing.

Obi Wan speaks of Anakin being a good friend in the OT, well now in the PT we get to SEE what he meant.
I think Episode III's duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin will put all of the pain in Obi-Wan's description of his relationship with Anakin into perspective. Maybe the reason speaking of Anakin and Darth Vader as two seperate people (to Luke) came so easily...is because to him part of the boy he knew as Anakin died when he became Darth Vader.

As a writer, I think GL is going to make this duel emotional from the sense that (as fans) we know Anakin is going to give in to the dark side, but Obi-Wan is going to do everything he can to prevent that...even if it means killing his padawan.

"You're the closest thing I have to a father"
While I've always looked at the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin as more like an older brother trying to raise his younger sibling as a promise to their mutal "father figure" (after Qui-Gon's death)...I think this scene will be emotional from the persepctive of Obi-Wan not wanting to give up on Anakin...yet, doing his duty as a jedi.

See you say two best friends fighting each other. The thing is, we cant really see that because we never seen Anakin and Obi-Wan as "BEST" friends on the PT. We seen times when they saved each other and talked and stuff, but they were always arguing and Obi-Wan was always correcting him.

Ah but they are obviously friends, its just they've been stuck together for so long, that they've started bickering to one another.
Its clear each of them cares about the other (Anakin's comments early on in the film cement his feelings. Then Obi-Wan's "I do hope nothings happened to him" and his relief at seeing Anakin alive on Geonosis, and his pride when Anakin makes a good call in the gunship.).

I was thinking about this, and if Anakin is already over to the Dark Side at this point, won't he be different? Won't he be trying to make Obi-Wan mad, like he does with Luke? It seems to me that Obi has kind of tread the Dark Side a few times with his anger over Qui Gon's death used to kill Maul and with some jealousy toward Anakin. Just another aspect I've thought about.

If it is done RIGHT it should be emotional. Why wouldn't it be? Anakin is going against everything that the jedi has taught him for 10 years plus, also he is fighting his best friend, a mentor, a father, his teacher. Anakin knows that the only one that supports him is the Palpy. However if Lucas screws this fight scene up and it is as bad as the Obi1 - Vader fight in EP4. I hope it is emotional, because if it is not, I'm going to savagly beat George Lucas up.

I was looking over the last many posts, and I have a seemingly simple question: What could make Obi-Wan so angry?
The more I think about it, the cooler it would be to see Obi-Wan a little angry during the duel as well. If he was strictly defending himself, it wouldn't be as exciting. We all know how it ends, but I think there should be the moment like in ROTJ when Luke almost turns.
I don't think it'd make much sense for both Anakin and Obi-Wan be pissed at each other, but imagine what that would look like.

"That whole scene could have been great, but only the Yoda fight really looks good; usually Lucas is spot-on with things like that - I can't believe how poorly the Obi-Wan and Anakin sequences are. It boggles the mind."

I thought the exact opposite, as the Yoda fight looked so unrealistic. Watch Yoda, he basically only pokes at Dooku and jumps around. I thought the whole Anakin vs. Dooku was easily the best lightsaber fighting we have seen in any of the films.

I don't know his name, but on the Jedi Council, there is an alien with a rather large neck. I hope he is on screen when Anakin dishes away with that guy. From when i first saw Episode 1, i have just wanted to see that guy get his head chopped off that really long giraffe type neck. If that is in Episode 3, I will be more content than I will be without it.

I won't give spoilerish specifics but... according to RM, PH and Ewan, the Duel is very emotional and personal. And that's part of the reason it's so good.

It will defenitely be the most intense of the duels. Not necessarily the most emotional though.

Yarael Poof a.k.a the guy with the long neck died in the Zam Wessel one-shot. The real reason is Lucas didn't want people thinking there was a Kaminoan on the Jedi Council.

Hayden Christensen said in a few interviews that the duel is the most intense part of the movie and that if sort of portrays the whole saga.

``There's a light saber fight at the end between Ewan (McGregor, who plays Obi-Wan Kenobi) and I, which we trained very hard for, and it'll be spectacular.''

I'm trying to find the other (longer) quote..

I think Anakin at this point will know Obi is hiding something from him, so in turn he will threaten that not knowing what it is(typically him don't you think). And in doing so Obi-Wan will probably get pretty mad & he will have to realize Anakin is a danger to his secret, so what could make both Obi-Wan & Anakin pit against each other like that ??

    the kids

This is the ultimate secret of the whole saga("Sister...Soo you have a twin sister. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me, now his failure is complete"), Anakin will not beat Obi-Wan until Luke accidentily reveals the (complete)secret to him in ROTJ, but in turn - he acknowledges that Obi-Wan did the right thing, and that's Anakin thinking right there - hence, he no longer attacks Luke, and the Fight between Obi-Wan & Anakin is over after 4 movies.

This is how i imagine it to be.

according to the ROTJ novelization, which admittedly doesn't mean anything, as Lucas has changed his mind before (i.e. Owen Lars is NOT Obi-Wan's bro),

Vader does NOT know Padme is pregnant at all, so he is unaware of the existence both of Luke and Leia.

So I'm guessing The Duel will have more to do with Padme, her death, her faked death, something than the twins.

I believe so. Luke is fighting his father and for the fate of the galaxy. But he's never known his father. Obi-Wan, on the other hand, is being betrayed by the boy he's raised for almost 15 years. This isn't a practical stranger under a mask. They have to look one another in the eyes. It's going to be one of the most emotional duels ever, not only in SW.
