As others have said, Anakin is still growing and is a wiry teenager, not unlike Luke will be. The Skywalker men are not offensive linemen in American football.

In Ep III he will have more definition, again tracking Luke's progress to ROTJ. Nevertheless, he will still be slender, never the type whose neck is wider than the head. The DV suit is likely gives him a greater bulk than he ever had in normal mortal life. According to the Official site, as Vader, Anakin is taller in the suit, so why not bulkier too?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Both Ma and Pa Skywalker are quite fine.

I think Ewan McGregor does a great job as Obi-Wan, but like I said many times, Hayden just doesn't cut the mustard as the future Dark Lord of The Sith Darth Vader, ruler of the galaxy and all.

OK, Anakin WAS pretty skinny but then again, he's still young and that's something that can easily change in time. What bothered me more about him was his snotty, little kid whining. He needed a good swift kick in the butt, IMO

I didn't like the way they covered him in self-tan fake sun cream, giving him that "orange" look.

I thought he would've had time to go under a sun bed for a few hours; the amount of money Lucas has, you would think he could afford to book him a sunbed a few weeks prior to shooting.

I, personally, think it would've been better if David Prowse played Anakin in Episodes 2 and 3. Not that I didn't like Hayden's acting, but his physique didn't look anything like Vader's. What they really should have done was have David Prowse play the role, but then put Hayden's voice over it.

Actually, the best thing they could do is take the guy who played the ghost of Anakin at the end of Episode 6, dye his hair black, and super-impose his head onto Prowse's body, then have Hayden do the voice acting. That would really make it look like Vader as a young man.

MetalGoldKnight, I find your signature very stupid as you call Return of the Jedi mediocre but give it 8/10. You lose credibility right there. But you are a funny person, so who needs credibility.

Entfirst, stay on target, don't be insulting other members based upon their signatures. I think you should respect MetalGoldKnight's opinion. If he feels that someone older should have played Anakin, then respect that and don't go off topic and insult his signature. It's uncalled for. Now onto business :)

Now for my opinion on Anakin. I feel that HC was fine for the choice of Anakin. Sure he's not as tall as Vader was, but that's the whole robotic thing coming into play. I'm 20 years old and I'm still filling out. You're not exactly filled out at that age. My dad was the same size as I am at my age. But he's now a few inches taller and about 20 pounds heavier. As your grow older, your metabolism changes and your body changes. That's the basic explanation for Anakin's future changes in size.

Jeez, people still complain about the height thing? Vader's a cyborg. His mechanical limbs are longer than his human ones!

I'm a gusher on this kind of subject, so I will try to keep the lid on a little.

I agree w/ the people who are pointing out that young men of 19-20 aren't necessarily filled out all the way. Probably Anakin has a high metabolism, everything he eats gets burned off immediately, plus look at all the exercise he gets. He hasn't had the opportunity to bulk up. I live in a university town and work on campus so I see young men Anakin's age all the time. They tend to be on the lean side.

I read somewhere that Hayden is a star tennis player, which would translate well to lightsaber moves. Plus, tennis players are lean and muscular, not bulky. I found Hayden to be close to perfect as Anakin/young Darth Vader. I whined a little that he's too good looking to be Luke's father, but the idea that the masked, disfigured, mostly robotic Darth Vader was once a drop dead gorgeous hunk is extremely titillating to me.

And it's true GL has asked Hayden to bulk up for ep 3. The character ages a couple years between 2 and 3 as well, so he's got time to fill out the rest of the way. His height doesn't really matter because Darth Vader is "more machine than man" - his hardware alone could account for the disparity there.

I could go on but I have gushed so much on other threads I am starting to make myself ill.

Did you actually finish reading my signature? It says 'Mediocre, but with a fitting ending". The final scenes with Luke, Vader, and the Emporer were enough to make me give the movie two points more than I would have otherwise. And besides, the posts I made here weren't entirely serious anyway, although I do believe they should have gotten someone taller and more muscular to play Anakin.

MetalGoldKnight: Sebastian Shaw has been dead since 1994, so I don't think your idea would work.

SithLord127: You, like many other posters on the JC, are trying to make Anakin into Vader before his time. You guys would prefer to have Jesse Ventura play Anakin. [face_plain]

No, Hayden was the perfect choice for Anakin. Anakin is a teenager ridden by normal teenage angst, and Hayden pulls that off perfectly. The first time I saw him act--in an episode of Higher Ground--I was completely blown away by his talent. The same thing happened when I saw Life as a House. He definitely earned that Golden Globe nomination, and probably would have gotten the award had he not been up against so many older and more experienced actors. (He himself said he didn't deserve it and Ben Kingsley did--gotta love the modesty on this guy. :) )

As far as his physique--yes, he's thin, but he's 6'1", and like several others have said, he probably hasn't finished filling out yet. And don't underestimate the strength of thin people--my brother is built like Hayden--same height and weight--and benches about 225 pounds (was benching 300 at his peak). And yes, Lucas did tell him to "bulk up" for Episode III.

That isn't the point. Even if in Episode III we will see a 'bulked up' Anakin who can lift 750 lbs., it's still not going to explain why he's 7 inches taller as Vader. And you don't really start 'filling out' at 21, especially if you're stuck in a robotic suit. I suppose the whole thing about 'his robot limbs being different sizes' is the best explanation, but I still wouldn't have minded seeing a taller Anakin in Ep. II.
